Term 2 Week 10 - Wednesday, 23rd June 2021

PIE DRIVE

Our Stage 3 Pie Drive Fundraiser was very successful with 1196 pies sold! This equates to $2849 funds raised (profit) for the Stage 3 excursion to Burrendong Sport & Recreation Camp, with students attending in mid November for 5 days. An explanation of how funds are distributed can be found below.

Thank you to all families who got behind this fundraiser. I would also like to acknowledge the following people for their assistance in packaging the various orders last Tuesday: Shailee Roxburgh, Belinda Drane, Mr McGregor,  Miss Frecklington, Miss Jasprizza, Ms Carthew, Mrs McNabb, Miss Stammers. A big thanks to Mrs Corby for all help organising supplies and delivery.  Finally, thankyou to Mr Neal and Miss Croker for organising the fundraiser and Mrs McNamara for her work in preparing and processing the order.

It is also timely to acknowledge our school P&C who will pay the cost of the bus transport to and from Burrendong, usually in excess of $1000. The combination of the Pie Drive fundraiser and the P&C subsidy have a considerable impact in reducing the cost of the excursion.

Fund Distribution

  • Funds are distributed in the following way. Students attending the excursion who sell pies receive the ‘profit’ from each pie sold off the cost of their excursion.
  • From the sale of each pie, approximately $4.98 goes to the school for fundraising. The amount varies slightly depending on the type of pie.

FINAL MESSAGES

Office Visitors

Late last week I was fortunate to have Levi Maunder and Beau Ravot-Smith call by my office to play a very clever Maths game which looked at strategies to use a 100 chart to find the difference between numbers. I was very impressed by the boys' speed and understanding of place value. Great work lads!

SRC Fundraiser

I would like to acknowledge the school SRC and Ms Stokes for their recent fundraising efforts in support of Girilambone PS community. The casual clothes day and spare change day raised a total of $370! The money will be donated to Girilambone PS to use to host a community event to lift the spirits of their families after what has been some very challenging times over the past few years. Thank you to the OEPS community for your generous support of this fundraiser. Ms Stokes has already informed them of our success and they are very excited for the donation!

Debating

Yesterday our school debating team hosted a debate against Orange Public School. Our team argued the affirmative side with the topic being 'Daylight savings should be abolished'. Though not coming away with the win today, the girls did an outstanding job, arguing strongly and presenting many good points. Our team consisted of Grace Duffy (1st Speaker), Jade Privett (2nd Speaker), Addison Warren (3rd Speaker) and Kenzi Caughlan (4th Speaker). The team was also assisted by Erin Anderson (Timekeeper), Mia Warren (Host) and Leilani Oliver (Acknowledgement of Country). A big thank you to Miss Cheney for coaching and organising the debate as well as Mrs Pulbrook who stepped in to assist at short notice with the help of Mr McGregor and Mrs Sweeting.

OEPS Sports Representatives

Congratulations to Amelia Gersbach who travelled down to Sydney last week as part of the Wester Regions Girls Soccer Team to compete at the NSW State Carnival. Amelia reports having a great week, playing centre-mid and netting herself a goal late in the carnival. Congratulations Amelia!

Well done also to Eve and  Sienna Hathaway who travelled out to Dubbo earlier this week as part of the Orange District Girls Touch Football Team. The girls attended the trials day seeking selection in the Western Region team. Though not making the final team, both girls reported having a great day, enjoying the challenge of playing at the trials. Well done girls!

Lastly, I would like to thank the students, staff and parents for a great term. I would like to wish all students a safe and happy holiday and I look forward to a wonderful Term 3. School resumes for students on Tuesday 13th July. Should you have concerns during the holiday period School Security can be contacted on 1300 880 021.

Have a great week,

Glen Bourke

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Many thanks to parents/carers for your commitment to meet with teachers over the past almost two weeks to discuss the progress and achievement of your children for Semester One. It is not too late to make an interview - please either contact your child’s class teacher/s or the school office on 6362 7464.

Generally, interviews will take place in your child’s classroom, however as some interviews will occur in school hours we occasionally have to organise alternative interview locations if the classroom is in use. Interview Confirmation sheets were sent out by teachers in Week 8 detailing date, time and location of interviews. Please come via the school office if unsure of where to go in the school grounds. A reminder that interviews MUST start and stop according to booking times. In the case of an interview starting late, it will still finish at the prescribed time otherwise this will impact on all following bookings. We strongly suggest arriving early to ensure time to find a park and move to your interview location.

Students in 2 Koala

Please note, if your child is in 2 Koala, Mrs Press is on leave during the last two weeks of this term. This means that the interviews for this class will take place in Weeks 1 & 2 of Term 3. A letter detailing this information and the booking system for this class was sent home last week and the School Interviews site is now live to make an interview booking.

Students in 4/5 Seal

Please note, if your child is in 4/5 Seal that there is also a variation from the normal schedule. We are excited to see Mr Mellis return to school after undergoing serious back surgery earlier this term. The reports for 4/5 Seal will be distributed this week and interviews for this class will take place in Weeks 1 & 2 of Term 3. A letter detailing this information and the booking system for this class was sent home last week and the School Interviews site is now live to make an interview booking.

Interview bookings for parents/carers of students in 2 Koala or 4/5 Seal can be made by:

Kindergarten Students

A reminder that Kindergarten interviews have already taken place in Term 1—these students will still get their reports at the same time as the rest of the school but will not have interviews unless by request.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS

Throughout the second half of the year we begin to make plans around our incoming 2022 Kindergarten students and in particular our school transition processes. If you intend to enrol a kindergarten student for next year, or know of someone that will be, please ensure enrolments are placed via the school office as soon as possible. In early August we will be forming our Kinder Enrolment Panel and making decisions as to placements for our school. Enrolment forms are available via the school office and are due back at the very latest by Wednesday, 4th August.

CHICKEN POX

The school has recently had a confirmed case of Chicken Pox which means that we are required to notify the community. The information below has been taken from the NSW Health website and is provided to assist parents in the event of a suspected case.

Chicken Pox (Varicella)

Chickenpox is usually a mild childhood illness that causes a rash of red, itchy spots that turn into fluid-filled blisters. They then crust over to form scabs, which eventually drop off. Most people recover without complications, but sometimes the infection can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia and inflammation of the brain

Early in the illness, the virus is spread by coughing. Later, it is spread by direct contact with the fluid in the blisters.

Children with chickenpox should avoid others by staying at home, cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue, and wash their hands regularly. Children with chickenpox shouldn’t share toys, utensils, food or drinking cups.

Chickenpox is now less common because children are vaccinated at 18 months of age.

Keep at home?

Yes. Children should be excluded until all blisters have dried—this is usually at least 5 days after the rash first appears.

SCHOOL PHOTOS

School photos will be taken on Thursday 5th August 2021 (Week 4 next term). All students are asked to be dressed in full winter uniform, including black shoes. If you are unsure or need assistance with uniform requirements please contact the school office as we are more than happy to assist. Envelopes have been sent home with each student. Family envelopes are also available from the office. Please note, all envelopes must have the correct money. NO CHANGE WILL BE GIVEN. All envelopes must be handed in by Wednesday 4th August 2021. School leaders, including House Captains need to bring their badges for photos.

SICK CHILDREN

We urge parents and carers to keep child/ren at home if they are feeling unwell, particularly if they have a cold, fever, cough, sore throat, any respiratory illness or flu-like symptoms. We are excited to have our child/ren back at school but we also have a priority to ensure our staff and students are kept healthy and safe. Also, if your child/ren arrive at school unwell or fall ill during the day, the office staff will call you to pick the child/ren up as soon as possible.

The procedures are in place to protect the wellbeing of all members of the school community and remain of critical importance.

WHAT'S COOKING

Last week in the kitchen, we harvested our own lemons and made these delicious Lemon Coconut Syrup Cakes. A big hit! You can substitute flour with gluten free flour or even almond meal. Try them these holidays. Divine!

This week in the kitchen garden we have a trivia quizz where students get to work in groups sharing our discoveries so far this year.

Next term we look forward to harvesting our cabbage, broccoli and cauliflowers.

Happy Cooking Everyone!
