FRIDAY AUGUST 30 - PUPIL FREE DAY

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 2 - SCHOOL CLOSURE DAY

From the Acting Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

To assist us to support our students and improve learning outcomes for all of our students we will be conducting PAT Reading and PAT Maths testing for all students in Years 1 to 7. This testing will be conducted over the next few weeks online in the computer room. Our Year 1 teachers are being released to conduct the Year 1 Phonic Screening test on our Year 1 students. The results from these tests along with the NAPLAN results will be analysed to inform classroom teaching practice, intervention programs and recorded on our school data wall.

We will also be conducting PAT Science tests to assist us in gaining an insight into the areas our students are showing strengths and identify areas of weakness to inform our planning and programming for 2020. This will be conducted during Science lessons in early Term 4 in the computer room.

The National Assessment Program has selected our school to participate in the Civic and Citizenship Main Study. This is part of the national strategy to monitor and report on Year 6-10 student progress toward achievement of the objectives outlined in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians 2008 endorsed by the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs. This measures not only student’s skills, knowledge and understanding of the Australia’s system of government and civic life but also student’s attitudes, values and participation on civic-related activities at school and in the community. This is also an online computer based test. A sample of 20, Year 6 students will be selected by ACER to undertake this assessment between October 21 – November 1 by a nominated teacher from our school.

To assist us with our planning for 2020, if you are planning to move from the area or know of families who are moving into the area please inform us of this as soon as possible.

Your feedback is important to us. We would appreciate you taking the time to complete the links for our Parent Opinion Survey and Volunteer Award as your children are the centre of everything we do and we aspire to improve student learning outcomes for every student who attends Thiele Primary School.

Assembly Report

The assembly last week was hosted by T1, Miss Curyer’s reception and Year 1 students.  The theme of the assembly was to recognise and acknowledge the work of our wonderful SSO’s. Students had been interviewed and videoed about how they are supported by the SSO’s in the classroom and in the yard. It was fantastic hearing about all of the ways Michelle, Ali, Emma, Milly, Deb, Amanda, Cheryl, Maureen, Jayne, Jane, Jo, Mick, Brett and Scott support our students and teachers within our school.

To celebrate Science Week Ms Gericke had rearranged the timetable to provide a double science lesson for all of our classes. This meant that our classroom teachers had the opportunity to work with their students and Ms Gericke in the science room. The theme for Science Week this year was Space and very year level had a different challenge. We were encouraged to dress up as a scientist, astronomer, engineer, meteorologist, mathematician, geologist, astronaut or anyone who contributes to science or space. Photos of the students who dressed up were shown on the big screen.

Many awards were presented and we were reminded of the Book Week Parade on Tuesday 20th August and the Book Week Disco on Friday 23rd August in the Gym. Richard from FYI will be the DJ and we can come dressed up in our Secret Power outfits.

National Science Week - Casual Day

National Science Week was celebrated here at Thiele Primary School from the 12th - 16th of August. Destination Moon: More Missions, More Science was this year’s theme alongside the 50th anniversary of man landing on the moon. This theme was a great way for teachers and their students to discover past missions to the Moon and space programs that have solved some of the seemingly unsolvable problems—and current and future space programs, operations and missions. Many of these use big picture thinking in science to solve problems, and technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions. This will help forge our future paths in the areas of space operations, space science, Earth observations, positioning systems and communications. During this week, each class was a double lesson to partake in a National Science Week Activity. The activities conducted for each class were as follows:

T1 and T2: Make space stations where students rotated between 4 activities; design and build the coolest spacesuit, design and build yourself as a moving astronaut, design and build a straw rocket and design and create a 3D rocket on Makers Empire.

T4 and T5: designed and created either a 2D or 3D Moonscape, detailing a particular mission to the moon that they could code a robot from Earth and arriving at their destination ‘moon.’

T8, T10 and T12: created a new astronaut-like Pokémon that had 21st century abilities enabling him/her to be able to live and work on the moon.

T9: Designed and created a spacesuit for a member in their group to put through a fitness test to see if it could be considered for future astronauts and their proposed mission to Mars.

T13, T14, T15 & T16: Designed and created a 4-wheeled, fuel-powered spacecraft from a plastic bottle that could move at least one metre.

Overall, we all had a fantastic week engaged in these activities, testing our methods, solving possible future problems but all experienced a small taste of thinking or behaving like an astronaut. As part of the celebration we also had a ‘Dress up like a Scientist, Engineer, Technologist or Mathematician Day’ where there were a lot of amazing costumes worn in support of recognising how important science is in our everyday lives. Please find some photos from the day below.

Campus Performing Arts Showcase

Our Campus Performing Arts Showcase took place on Thursday of Week 4, with a matinee and an evening performance. It was wonderful to see the many and varied talents of our students, and to see our audience thoroughly enjoying the show.

The opportunities for students to perform as soloists and in small and large ensembles, to Compere, to participate in stage management, and to develop sound and lighting technical skills, is a fantastic part of what we do in Performing Arts on Campus.

Our sincere thanks go to the many staff, students and parents who supported this event, giving their up time and sharing their skills to make this one of our most successful Showcase series yet…
