PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Transition to a new school year

Programs for individual students, class, stage and school programs are now in place this year to ensure quality teaching and learning for all students but also programs that support our students to become fine human beings.  This citizen building can be seen in programs like this week's Year 6 leadership program Anspire, through the class buddies program, school assemblies, Building Resilience in Children (BRIC) program, Bounce Back program, Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and our school values focussing on respect, responsibility and resilience. While teaching and learning is our core business, each year we also strive to develop the 'whole child' through a strong, positive school culture.

Morning drop offs

Each morning, parents are asked to please develop children's independence by saying goodbye at the school gates and asking children to walk to the playground by themselves.  Even in wet weather, please encourage children to make their own way into the school building to their classrooms.  Before the school bell in the mornings is the busiest time of the day for teachers and parents are asked to make another time to catch-up.

Infants / Primary Assemblies

Our assemblies are in full swing with infant's class assemblies being held in the 'odd' school weeks and primary class assemblies in the 'even' weeks (see school calendar). Parents are invited to attend the school assemblies, in particular the assembly their child's class is hosting.

Shout out to Drummoyne PS by Stray Kids

Bhang Chan, lead singer of internationally renown band Stray Kids, gave a huge shout out to Drummoyne PS on Wednesday night at Qudos bank Arena. Chris Bhang, a past student of DPS in the early 2000's told staff at the time that one day he was going to be a pop star! Amazing how childhood dreams can come true!

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Class of the Week - 1J

Class 1J has been hard at work planning for their writing. This week they have drawn the events of having a small accident using a story map which is an important part of the writing process.

Student Attendance - the importance of arriving to school on time

Arriving at school and class on time:

  • Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
  • Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
  • Gives students time to greet their friends before class
  • Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. Please support your child to arrive at school on time, ready to learn each day. This will help set them up for success later in life.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-smart measures in schools

With another wave of COVID expected in March, NSW Health advise that it will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will continue to implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. People exposed to COVID-19 should follow NSW Health guidanceExternal link and test to identify infection early even if they are not experiencing any symptoms.

  • strongly encouraging COVID-19 vaccinations for students, staff and their families, including a booster shot (when eligible) and maintaining double dose vaccination requirements for staff who work in an SSP

  • good hygiene practices including regular hand washing with soap and warm water and/or use of hand sanitiser

  • maintaining natural ventilation, with consideration of local environmental circumstances

  • boosted cleaning during the day, with particular attention given to high touch surface areas
  • wearing a mask for all staff and visitors when working with or visiting Schools for Specific Purposes (SSPs), support units or schools with students who are at greater risk of serious illness should they contract COVID-19 particularly indoors and when physical distancing is not possible

  • assessing risk and applying appropriate safeguards across activities and events

COVID reporting

It is important for our community to register their positive RAT result to Service NSW to access NSW Health support including antiviral medicines if they are eligible.

LEARNING AND SUPPORT

Speech and Occupational Therapy

As you know, our school employs a speech therapist one day each week to provide early intervention support in our Kindergarten and Year 1 classes in the areas of expressive and receptive language and phonological awareness. This week Maria Vasili commenced working with Kindergarten and Year 1 classes. Maria is an employee of Nash Speech Therapy in Drummoyne. Maria will continue to work closely with teachers, the Learning and Support Team and School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) to maximise the communication skills of our young students.

We also welcome back our Occupational Therapist, Aleksandra Babic. Aleks is a valued member of the Learning and Support Team and provides support to the school through whole class lessons focussing on handwriting and fine motor skill development as well as supporting teachers and students with strategies to manage self-regulation. For this term, Aleks will be working in Year 1 classrooms delivering an explicit fine motor lesson supported by each class teacher. An important part of this is upskilling classroom teachers so Alek's expertise can be utilised throughout the week. Some students in Year 2 will be receiving small group OT intervention to further develop their fine motor control. Any student from Kindergarten to Year 6 can be referred to Aleks who can conduct an individual screening. Further information can be provided through your child's class teacher.

Both the occupational therapy and speech programs are funded by the school.

Helping your child with the new curriculum

The new Curriculum sets the learning requirements for each stage of primary school. The 4 stages are:

●       EARLY STAGE 1 – Kindergarten

●       STAGE 1 – Years 1 and 2

●       STAGE 2 – Years 3 and 4

●       STAGE 3 – Years 5 and 6.

NSW K–6 English and Mathematics syllabuses

The NSW school curriculum has undergone the first comprehensive reform in 30 years after an extensive curriculum review and consultation.

The curriculum review has been informed by consultation with teachers and education experts from around the State, as well as a detailed examination of quality international education systems. In 2018 and 2019, parents and carers took part in the review through consultation.

Reform recommendations include the priority of building strong foundations for future learning with new English and Mathematics syllabuses for Kindergarten to Year 2. The new English and Mathematics K–2 syllabuses highlight foundational literacy and numeracy skills to develop competence in:

●       oral language

●       reading

●       writing

●       mathematics.

Year 6 Leadership - ASPIRE

What is influence? What difference can I make?

Drummoyne PS values highly the role that year 6 students play as student leaders of the school. This week, our most senior students participated in the ASPIRE leadership incursion. Facilitators led an engaging program of high energy, interactive activities formulated for students to develop their leadership skills. The ASPIRE model calls upon every student to contribute through their influence, strengths, teamwork and actions. Throughout the day, year 6 students practised strategies that can have a positive impact on others (see photos).

With the support of stage 3 teachers and specialist staff, year 6 students are now encouraged to take responsibility for a school role that they can sustain for the rest of the year. Success in leadership endeavours is most effective when it is supported by teachers, peers and family. The demonstration of responsibility, initiative and perseverance in their role is essential. These school roles have the potential to strengthen student voice and leadership potential in all students, as well as enable an opportunity to practise the lifelong skills of responsibility and resilience.

Please stay tuned for progress reports on year 6 leadership roles at DPS!

Respect

Outside everyone is different

Inside we're just the same.

Everyone has feelings.

How many can you name?

The way that you treat others

Is the way that they'll treat you.

So respect each other's differences

And they'll respect yours too.

Enrichment applications for SSC Balmain Campus Year 7 2024 close on 31 March 2023.

All the information about the application process is on their website at :https://balmain-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/enrol_with_us/enrichment-enrolment.html

2023 school travel applications are now open

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2023, can now apply.

A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody). Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2023.

OFFICE NEWS

Lost Property

There was a large number of lost property items including hats, drink bottles, towels, goggles etc that were left by students at the swimming carnival last week

Please collect from outside the school office.

Please label everything!

Please ensure your child’s name is permanently and clearly labelled on belongings such as school hats, jackets, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags.

Please use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels, go through your child’s bag with them regularly and check that labels haven’t faded with washing.

Medication at school

For new students who require medication to be administered at school, all instructions and medications need to be handed in to the office.

To support this process and ensure the dosage is correct and medicine is stored securely, please complete the “Request for administration of prescribed medication to a student” form and hand in at the office with the medicine.  The form is available from the school office and can also be found on our school website.

No student should keep medication in their bags. Thank you for supporting the health and safety of all students.

For returning students, any changes to medication should also be directed to the office.

SMS Messaging

In an effort to make it easier for parents to notify the school of a student absence, we are using SMS messaging. At 10am each morning, if your child has been marked absent, you will receive an SMS message to your phone. You will then be able to respond via return SMS, phonecall, email or reply via Skoolbag with the reason for your child's absence.

If you have documentation supporting the absence (such as a medical certificate or negative COVID test result), please send it to school with your child when they return.
