Term 1 - Week 8 (24th March 2023)

Dear St Mary's School Community

Values in Focus: Leadership

We set a positive example in the classroom, playground and community.

John: 11:1-45: Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead

In Sunday’s Gospel, Mary and Martha sent for Jesus, because their brother Lazarus was dying. When Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days, and many had come to comfort them. Jesus wept, for He loved Lazarus. Then Jesus told them to open the tomb. He said in a loud vice, “Lazarus, come out!” and the dead man appeared with the grave cloths still on his body. Although scripture refers to the mortal character of our physical bodies, it is more concerned with spiritual life and death. We can see that God does not leave us to languish in our various deaths. Instead, God offers us new life out of the tombs. All of this is accomplished through the mercy and compassion of God.

St Joseph’s Feast Day

St Joseph's Feast Day was on Monday 20th March and a Mass was coordinated by the Year 4/5 class. It was a beautiful ceremony celebrated reverently by Father Andrew.

Feast of the Annunciation

Saturday (25th March) is the Feast of the Annunciation – this marks the visit of the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during which he told her that she would be the mother of Jesus, the Son of God.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN is now complete and all students scheduled to participate in the assessment have done so. Special thanks to all our students and staff who tried to be as quiet as possible during testing time to allow the Year 3s and 5s the best opportunity to do as well as possible. Also, thank you to our test administrators and NAPLAN coordinator in completing the requirements in running a smooth assessment schedule.

The Arts

Pre-primary

This term so far, we have been singing lots of songs and moving to the beat using all sorts of shaking, stamping, twisting and hopping. We have also really enjoyed doing a few folk dances.

We got to have a go at using the instruments such as shakers, tapping sticks, tambourines, bells and drums.

We have been listening really carefully to sounds to work out if they are high or low, loud or soft.

Year 1 and 2

This term we have been clapping, playing and singing along to our rhythm patterns. We have also been learning about short and long sounds. We have had a great time learning a new folk dance called the Grand old duke of York/A hunting we will go.

Year 3-6

Our focus this Term is Drama and we have been looking at Improvisation.

Improvisation in Drama is great fun and through games and short plays we have been developing our skills to make it more enjoyable for the audience to watch. We have had many laughs this term at the characters and scenes that have been created at St Mary’s!
