Assistant Principal

I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Mr Paul Easton on his permanent appointment as College Principal from 2021. During 2020, in the capacity of Acting Principal, we have seen Mr Easton initiate a number of changes and improvements already. The years ahead will be filled with opportunities.

The Delany community

Our brother school, St Paul’s Greystanes, has been hit with COVID disruptions this week. This process will be part of the “new normal” over the next year or more. As COVID cases arise, health authorities will be quick to lock down schools, venues or even suburbs with the objective of minimising the spread of this virus which is highly contagious.

A reminder to our community:

Students must not attend, and must be tested for COVID, if they are in any way unwell.

The academic community

Congratulations to our Year 12 students who now have the  Trial HSC examinations behind them. During the remaining four weeks of this term they will be working closely with staff and each other to identify mistakes made and solutions offered. Regardless of a student’s result, every mistake provides an opportunity to get things right and, ultimately, increase their HSC result.

As the end of Term 3 approaches, so too does the examination period for Year 11. These exams are the final tasks for the year 11 course, and students then begin their HSC program early in Term 4.

On this note, all students in both Years 10 and 11 must form good habits of study and assessment task completion so that they are prepared for their HSC year. NESA regulations govern how schools run their assessment programs, and there are clear procedures when work is not submitted on time. In short, a student will be “warned” that they are not meeting the necessary level of engagement and may ultimately become ineligible for a particular course. This in turn may mean the student doesn’t receive their Higher School Certificate.

Parents and family members can support students by keeping up to date with assessment schedules, all of which are accessible via Google Classrooms. Your child can show you how to access these schedules. Keep asking and talking about the tasks that are due, how they are progressing, what help you might be able to provide, and always your love and support.

The Patrician community

Our delayed and now restricted Multicultural Day runs on Friday. Despite the greatly reduced level of activity, we remain committed to raising funds for the Delany Foundation to support the Patrician schools throughout the world. Students will be invited to wear either their cultural dress (or bring it with them), or mufti clothes, and contribute $2 towards this fundraising effort.

St Patrick, pray for us.

International Literacy Day 2020

Delany College will be celebrating International Literacy Day on 8 September 2020. The following provides some background information about International Literacy Day.

Since 1967, International Literacy Day celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.

The world has made steady progress in literacy in the past decades. Yet, globally, 773 million adults and young people lack basic literacy skills, and more than 617 million children and adolescents are not achieving minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics.

The recent COVID-19 crisis has been a magnifier of existing literacy challenges, deeply affecting schooling and lifelong learning opportunities including for youth and adults with no or low literacy skills. International Literacy Day 2020 will provide an opportunity to reflect on and discuss how innovative and effective methods can be used in youth and adult literacy programmes to face the pandemic and beyond. (UNESCO)  LITERACY CAN'T WAIT

People with no or low literacy skills, who already face multiple disadvantages in their daily lives, have also had limited access to health and preventive information about the coronavirus and online learning opportunities to continue their education. The COVID-19 crisis has shed light on the unpreparedness of infrastructure, education systems, programs, and people for ensuring the continuity of teaching and learning in such a situation.

Religious Education

It is hard to imagine that we are already in week 7 of term 4!

While we have not been able to have reflection days and liturgies as we normally would, it is still important that we join together with our fellow brothers and sisters and celebrate important dates on our Church Calendar.

This week we celebrated Social Justice Sunday August 31, World Day of Prayer for the care of creation September 1 and International Day of Charity September 5.

I have included a summary for each of the days and some prayers which might be helpful to you.

Social Justice Sunday

The theme for Social Justice Sunday this year was around Mental health in Australia. The statement issued by Bishop Vincent Long, "encourages faith communities, governments and each one of us, to make mental health a priority.

" It is a fitting message given the year we have had!

The Bishops Statement further encourages us to "reject stigmatisation...and to call for policies and service provision that meets the needs of the poorest and most marginalised members of our community."

To read the statement you can visit the following site Social Justice Statement

Prayer

Jesus, you invite us all into the fullness of life.

May we support one another to flourish in body, mind and spirit. Strengthen our commitment to ensure that nobody falls through gaps in our systems of care.

People called you mad. Help us to recognise you in those who suffer mental ill-health today.

Show us how to eliminate stigmatisation of mental ill-health from our parishes, schools, communities and organisations.

You drew near to those who were suffering in body or mind.

May we too feel your nearness when we struggle with mental health challenges. May we be one as members of Your Body.

You invite us to share in your ministry of love and true compassion. May we be empowered by your Spirit to reach out to all people in need.

May we build communities of welcome and inclusion.

Amen

International Day of Charity

The date of 5 September was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace." https://www.un.org/en/observances/charity-day

Science week!

During science week we conducted escape rooms with stage 4 and 5 students. Students were a crew in a submerged research vessel and had 40 minutes to complete a series of challenges in order to switch to the emergency battery and turn the lights back on.

Along the way, students learnt about ocean exploration and innovations for the future of our oceans.

Science Week

This August our College participated in the Education Perfect Science championships The competition is designed to revise, consolidate and extend students knowledge of Science.

As a school we achieved very well compared to the international and domestic schools who participated ranking 491st globally (out of 1874 schools) and 321st in Australia (out of 1281 schools)In the 251-500 student category we came 54th out of 420 participating schools, 35th in Australia and 15th in NSW.

Two of our students, Phoebe H and Cindy W also obtained bronze awards for their efforts in learning during this event. At the same time as the international competition we also competed in the the 2020 EP Science Championships Parramatta Diocese Competition. In this competition Delany placed 8th overall.

Well done to all of our students from 7-12 who participated. Mr Narayan, Mr Robinson and I are extremely proud of your efforts in achieving these excellent results for Science.

Delany Athletics Carnival

On Monday 31 August, 2020 Delany College held their annual athletics carnival at Holroyd Sportsground, Holroyd. It was fantastic to see our students arrive in colours supporting their house patron!

The day was a huge success as students moved around in age groups to track and field and novelty events. It was great to the inter house competition amongst Mackillop, Chisholm, Campion and Tierney the points will be announced and age champions will be awarded at our next zoom assembly.

Y8 Italian

Y8 Italian students embraced their inner Cake Boss skills  decorating Italian cannoli shells with authentic vaniglia, cioccolata and ricotta filling from Pasticceria Papa.

Some added choc-chips or sprinkles and for the finishing touch, a scattering of icing sugar.Students agreed that the best part was indulging in their Italian creations.

Some cannoli even made it home to some very lucky families!Italian is offered as an elective in Stage 5 ??

Attendance BBQ

School attendance is a very important part of being a member of the Delany College community and is vital to achieving future success. One of the expectations we instill in our students is to be present, prompt and prepared for school, so that they understand the importance of this when they enter the workforce.

For this reason, on Thursday 20 August we held our first attendance BBQ of the year. Students were invited to attend the BBQ and receive a free sausage on a roll if their attendance has been consistently high all year or exceptionally high for the last three weeks.

Based on their attendance data, students could be a part of two attendance clubs: the “90+ Club” and the “100 Club.” Those students in the “90+ Club” have shown consistent attendance all year, boasting an attendance rate higher than 90%. The “100 Club” were those students who had attended every day of school in Weeks 2, 3 and 4.

There were several students that were able to achieve membership in both clubs, which was fantastic to see on the day.

Thanks to Ms. Katrib and Ms. Fasavalu who helped organize the food for the day and Naomi Habib, Chadi Karam, Mira Fahed, Tony Habib, Marcia Echeandia and Patrick Habib in Year 11 who prepared, cooked and served the food.

Our next Attendance BBQ will be held in Week 10, make sure you attend school every day between now and then!

The PDHPE storeroom has been moved and this has provided staff and students with a new and improved facility that is close to all the sport facilities and amenities at the College.

We encourage all of our students to participate in PDHPE practical lessons and change into their sport uniforms at the start and end of the lesson.

During these difficult and challenging times it is important that our students remain as active as possible.

Updated Health Care Plans & Medical Information

If your child has any type of allergy or Asthma please make sure you have an updated Health Care Plan or Asthma Action Plan from your doctor.

Without this Health Care Plan the school can not provide the appropriate medical treatment should your child become ill. The school updates their Excursion Risk Assessments from the Health Care Plan you provide to the school.

If your child takes medication on a regular basis the school will also need a letter from your local doctor or specialist indicating the medications taken, recommended dosage and time of the day this medication is consumed.

This is to ensure that should your child need to be treated by an ambulance or doctor in an emergency situation, the school can provide the relevant details. Please hand in all Health Care Plans to the Administration office and request that the plan be passed onto Mrs Collimore.
