School Values: Respect, Responsibility, Creativity, Integrity, Teamwork

Principal's Report

Dear parents,

Macedon PS Learning Expo – How the world works.

The students have been engaging in and range science-based learning this term, from space, physics, forces, and habitats.  The topic is an exploration of the physical and material world; of natural and human-made phenomena; of the world of science and technology.

We are celebrating our learning in this project with a science learning expo, tomorrow night, the 8th of September between 4pm and 6pm.  We ask that children are collected at 3:30pm (or go to after school care if enrolled), then at 4:00pm we will be opening our classrooms up for you to share and experience some of what our students have been learning this term.  Please see below for running sheet for the evening below.  It would be great to see you all there, please feel free to drop in for as little or as long as you see fit.

Library Learning Hub – Open Ceremony and Art Competition

At the learning expo on Thursday evening, we are holding an opening ceremony for the new Library Learning Hub at 4pm.  We invite you to come and have a walk through the space with your children.

As a part of the Library opening festivities we are holding an art competition.  We’re inviting any of our aspirant artists to submit a piece of 2D art of their favourite book character.

The art piece should be 2D piece of art on A3 size paper of their favourite book character, in their favourite scene from their favourite book.  The students can use any medium that they like that can be presented in 2D on an A3 sheet of paper.  Some examples of mediums might include, but are not limited to collage, painting, pencils, textas or line drawing.  The competition will run from today until the end of the school holidays with entries closing at 4pm on Monday 3rd of October.

All entries to be handed into the front office.

We will be handing out a prize for the best drawing at each year group, Foundation, Year One, Year Two, Year Three, Year Four, Year Five and Year Six.  Prizes will include the prestige of having their art piece framed and hung in the library and a book of the winners choice from this year’s CBCA shortlisted books.

Food Bank drive - Well done 3/4GS!

Last Wednesday, Wally and Cheryl from the Gisborne Foodbank, came to M.P.S to collect food donations from an inspiring group of children.  The amazing initiative, compassion, teamwork, creativity, and selflessness that Sienna, Harper, Asha, Martha, Yuka, Bella and Ivy undertook to raise money for the Gisborne Food Bank needs to be highly commended! This well organised team raised $254.05 within a month, by designing and creating a range of clay figurines, scarves, and origami. They then used the money raised to purchase tuna, coffee, laundry liquid, milo, honey, sweet biscuits, tinned vegies, long life milk and pasta sauces for people in need. They would like to say a big thank you to all the students at M.P.S who bought items from their store and supported such a wonderful organisation!

Indonesian News

Year 5 and 6 students have been working on multimedia works to share their knowledge about Indonesian flavours. Eva, Lilly and Grace have made a video reconstruction of our taste testing experience (with added dress-ups). Come and see this and other works on show outside the (old) library at the expo on Thursday.

Art Update

The sun is shining and we are VERY happy to be able to return to drawing in the Art Garden. Never assume however that Art is only about painting and drawing. We are getting prepped to create some amazing robotic installation art, at this week’s Macedon Primary Expo. We have gathered up a nice big collection of robot legs and arms and we even have a box of robot internal organs! Come to the Art room and create your own robot.

STEM Update

Today the Foundation students continued their exploration of robotics and movement, with our focus today being speed, acceleration, momentum and velocity.

And what better way to do this than some Robot Relay Races? (and an excuse for some fun alliteration of course)

Our Sphero Robots can record all the movements they make as they work and collect a huge amount of data that we can look at, so we saw that when our robots moved faster, they covered more distance (and were harder to stop!)

Please don't be surprised if next time you are driving, your young person wants to look at the dashboard of the car to see if the kilometres tick up faster if you start to drive faster...

Below you can see a selection of some of the student's Race Faces!

Thanks

Mr. Garcia

Community News

Macedon Ranges Storm Recovery Program

Anyone who was in the Macedon Ranges on June 9th, 2021, will remember the severe storm that caused widespread damage throughout big chunks of Victoria. The Macedon Ranges was heavily impacted with countless trees down, damage to properties and no power, phone or internet service for an extended period of time. Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health acknowledge the shocking nature of this event and would like to give young people the opportunity to share their experience of the storm and its aftermath. We feel it is important that what people went through is remembered and we will be putting together a video of mini-interviews so young people’s experiences are acknowledged and documented. If you are interested telling your story, please speak to a parent or guardian and contact Kylie from the Storm Recovery Program on 0491 089 598 or kylie.richardson@scchc.org by Friday 23rd September. A gift card will be provided to thank you for your time.
