Going on a bear hunt!

Visiting our Google Classrooms on a daily basis has been such an exciting experience for me...I've been reading that a number of our Kindergarten students have been going for lovely walks during their break times, looking for bears...I wonder where they all are...there could possibly even be one or two bears in our own Balmain Public School neighbourhood!

Good luck finding them! Stay safe!

Mrs Maria Lambos - Principal

A Note of Thanks

A personal thank you

We all know that we are currently going through very challenging times - Balmain Public School staff have been an incredible collective of support and strength for each other, as well as their dedication towards delivering the continuation of learning for all 382 students.

We had started our preparations for the possibility of school closure last week, as the COVID-19 situation in NSW has been unfolding day by day...as per last week's issue of the Pigeon Post, asking for our community to help support the local business that have been supporting the school, I organised some scrumptious wraps from Kafeine for Monday's lunch, as a small token of my appreciation.

Sadly, Kafeine shut its doors after trading on Thursday...we look forward to being able to support them again in the near future, once we get on the other side of this!

By Monday afternoon, following the NSW Premier's morning announcement, that for practical reasons, she was encouraging students to stay home from school if possible, as well as a supporting announcement from the NSW Department of Education's Secretary, Mark Scott, our preparations suddenly took an exponential 'ramp up'.

Our teachers worked together in stages after school on Monday, ensuring that all our students, whether at school or at home, would have a single teaching and learning program, accessing the same platform and learning opportunities, as of Tuesday morning.

Google Classroom was launched K-6 on Tuesday morning, and the rest, as they say, is history!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU, my amazing teaching staff - with the unwavering support from our non-teaching staff - I am so grateful for this fabulous team!

Thanks so much for looking after all of us...

Thank you so much to the families mentioned above...it was so lovely to receive these delicious treats on Thursday and Friday...we really appreciated you thinking of us during this time!

Parent & Carer home learning feedback...

What an amazing start to distance learning! Thank you for being so prepared, diligent and engaging. I’ve actually been able to get some work done!

Sylvie (5/6W) D's Mum

Just a little note to say well done to you all for transitioning to online learning so quickly and professionally. I know it’s a huge shift for all of us. Sending lots of caring and grateful thoughts.

Hamish (1/2M) and Oliver (3/4R) D's Mum

Thank you so so much for all wonderful daily classwork  and interaction. My husband and I are enjoying the activities almost as much as Emily. I love how interactive google classroom is, the correspondence and variety of activities and resources.

Speaking with friends from other schools they are still waiting to hear what homeschooling will look like. Balmain Public School is amazing! Thank you so much.

My daughter loves school and misses it so much at least we are still connected in some way and she is feeling that too. Thank you again, we really appreciate all the effort.

Emily (KG) K's family

I’m happy to say I think the school has responded amazingly in getting schedules and classwork up online so quickly. A massive credit to the teachers and leadership.

And then a massive credit to all the mums, dads and carers that have picked up an extra days work each day to fit our kids learning into our already busy schedules each day, even as we learn to live on top of each other 24/7!

Lots of adjustment all round, but very happy being part of the broader BPS family as we go through it.

Thank you, and good luck to all the parents and teachers in this challenging time.

Saxon (KG) R's Dad

We’ve really enjoyed Google Classroom this week. We’re really impressed how it all came together and just worked. We’ve found our ‘school from home’ mojo now and it’s been so insightful!

Thank you to everyone at BPS for making this transition as easy as possible.

Jasper (KK) G's Mum

Thank you and much appreciate your support in Ryan’s education in these challenging times.

Ryan (5/4M) R's Dad

The teachers have done an amazing job of engaging the students this week and Oliver has relished the experience.

Oliver (5/6Y) H's Mum

Thank you so much for organising online space for our kids...Google classroom was great and teachers are so involved, responding to every little comment and reviewing each work students were submitting. Also, it was great to see your online presence too.. Yasna was excited :)

Yasna (1/2M) K's Mum

Johnny's is really loving the home learning programme... all credit to his amazing teachers x

Johnny (5/6W) McC's Mum

I just wanted to pop you a note to say you and your team are doing an amazing job in the circumstances. Thanks for all the help and I hope you and the teachers can stay safe. I can’t wait to see all of you again soon.

Tristan (1/2B) L's Dad

Hi Annabel

I just wanted to write to you to say how impressed I am at you (& Ms Weston) at how well you have conducted this week. I have been telling everyone how amazing you have been to others. You are organised and on time, have attachments and links ready for the kids, are responding to their comments in real time.

As our kids attend two different public schools, we have a direct comparison, and I cannot tell you how different the two are...

I'm even impressed at our principal at BPS, who pops in to say hi. It just shows engagement with the children!

The three of you are such good leaders, so I just wanted to say thank you, particularly when the demands on you are probably so much higher at the moment!

Zachariah (5/6Y) C's Mum

Thank you again to you and all of your team for working so hard to create amazing solutions for our children during these unprecedented times.

Clancy differentiates his learning

Clancy, in 1/2 Cactaceae, had the task of making an instrument. Instead of doing this, Clancy differentiated his online learning and decided to play a classic rock guitar song instead...

More feedback from our Community...

The purpose of this email, though, is just to say how much I appreciate the effort you have gone to preparing for this and the clarity of your communication. It is very uplifting, when many things are not.

I am not sure how I could help you at all during this time, but if something occurs to you (of whatever kind), please just let me know. I would be honoured to assist.

Rory's Mum 5/6Y

Firstly our family want to thank you and the kindergarten teachers for the mammoth effort and energy it takes to deliver education remotely. Let's hope reverence for teachers improves immensely after the dust settles on isolation. Thank you for continuing to look after and teach Arianne and the other few students who are forced to still be at school.

Ari has delivered nothing but positive feedback of her teachers, activities and the new friendships she's fostered this week. Such a huge emotional confusion for little ones. What a way to start their educational journey.

Lastly, I want to thank you for the personal sacrifices you and the other Balmain teachers are being forced to take for the children of the few 'key workers'.

Arianne's Mum (KG)

All my children are online, and the systems appear to have really settled in well...The boys are managing the workflow, are engaged, and appear to be following the clear timetables your staff are setting at day start. They are quiet, and seem to always be working on tasks when I view their progress.

I’m sure many parents will have given feedback, I just wanted to join the list and ensure your team feel a solid sense of pride as  this turnaround would be testing them in many new skills. Changing and adapting quickly can be frustrating, however there must be a feeling of reward in your team knowing it appears to be working.

Connor, Alex and James' Dad (3/4M & 5/6F)

I just wanted to say what an amazing job our teachers have been doing to get the on-line learning up and running so fast and in such a comprehensive manner!

Whilst it is a big adjustment for us all, the kids are also adapting super well!

Henry and Elliot's Mum (1/2C & 3/4M)

I wanted to get in touch with some feedback on today's remote learning experience. Before I do, let me thank you both for getting things up and running so quickly.  We had no issues logging on or accessing information throughout the day.  I can only imagine the hours of work that have gone into this on your side...

Ned's Mum (1/2M)

We just wanted to thank you and the staff at BPS for all the effort going into helping our kids.

At such a strange time for everyone, we really appreciate your dedication and patience. Homeschooling is obviously not every parent's dream job and we are all in awe of what teachers do on a daily basis!

We are muddling through but the kids are in good spirits and we can't wait to be back in the playground.

Naomi and Remi's family (1/2L & 3/4B)

Congratulations to you and your staff for so quickly setting the students up for online learning! It’s working well to keep them on track.

Miles' and Oscar's Mum (1/2M & 3/4M)

I just wanted to say a huge thank you, and well done to Maria Lambos and all her fabulous teachers for getting the on-line learning up and running so quickly.

It is a huge success in our household, and creates a routine that is easy to follow.

Lachlan R's Mum 5/6C

Miss Martin did such a fabulous job

Brodie's Mum (3/4M)

Thanks again to everyone for doing such a great job in very difficult circumstances

Oliver P's Dad 1/2L

Thanks to all of you for your magnificent job this week in keeping the students learning and engaged. It has been truly extraordinary.

Lydia C L's Mum 5/6Y

Congratulations to you and all the staff on your handling of this very tricky time.

Lachie misses school, his friends and Ms Ferguson terribly but he has settled in just fine to the online program.

HUGE THANKS to you and all your team for what you’re doing

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT BALMAIN PS...

Spotlight on...

...K Jasmine!

What an exciting week for K Jasmine students!

Online learning is in full swing; we are proud to say students and families have embraced this exciting new platform of learning with gusto!

Over the past four days we’ve been lucky enough to be provided with an insight into how kindergarten are embracing our learning experiences and making them their own, often gathering younger siblings as helpers along the way!

From investigations, to exploring forms of literacy, sharing book recommendations on our live stream, developing number sense and discussing positional language, we’ve seen it all! We’ve loved watching videos of students and families creating musical instruments, uploading photos of future planets created in living rooms, proudly constructed cranes in backyards, gleaming big smiles next to sight words made from play dough, and even painting art galleries! We’ve loved kindergarten’s creativity and imagination! I couldn’t be more proud of all our kindergarten students!

We love our engagement sessions throughout the day and are always thrilled to see new pieces of work and photos! Thank you for embracing this new style of learning. Finally, we’d like to thank our families for all the extra support you’ve provided kindergarten, your hard work does not go unnoticed. Please remember to reach out if you ever require assistance!
