Delany College - Granville

Newsletter Term 2 Week 2

Principal's Message

Dear members of the Delany community,

Welcome back to Term 2. It is with great joy that we have been able to welcome students back on campus as we proceed with the gradual return to school for all students.  As you would be aware we recommenced face to face classes for Year 12 students last week, Year 11 this week and will welcome students from Years 7 to 10 back to the College 1 day per week from next Tuesday, 12 May. There are a number of important protocols in place and these are outlined by Mr Blomfield later in this newsletter.  It is critical, for the wellbeing of all members of the community, that there is full support and adherence to these measures.

The start to the term has been very different to normal and we have missed a number of significant celebrations due the COVID-19 restrictions.  Reflecting with students yesterday at our first virtual assembly, the last time we were able to gather as a whole school community was our St Patrick’s day mass. Even then, we were unable to celebrate the day in our usual manner with fun and festivities. This was disappointing given St Patrick is the patron saint of our College and of our Patrician heritage. We are committed to ensuring that as a community, that our significant events will be celebrated and are planning to reschedule these in Term 3.

Thank you to all members of our community for your ongoing support.   From our leaders at the Catholic Education Office in Parramatta, to you at home, it has been a great effort to continue to support our students and ensure to the best of our endeavours, their learning has continued and that they are well. Our teachers have been wonderful examples throughout this pandemic, illustrating the ideals of Pride, Passion and Persistence that we endeavour to instill in our students. Our teachers have been innovative, responsive and resilient. They reflect the spirit on which this College was founded and the spirit that will see it continue to flourish.

God Bless

It’s great to be back. A school is not a school when there are no school children, so it was a pleasure to welcome Year 12 students back last Thursday, as well as many other students who attend on a day to day basis.

The Delany community

Slowly but surely we are observing the return of students. At this stage every classroom has desks separated by 1.5 metres to ensure social distancing.  There are a number of protocols that are in place to protect both staff and students (and also your families) against the spread of Covid-19:

  • students are required to sit at a nominated desk and not move chairs or tables

  • students are required to clean their desk and chair at the conclusion of each lesson

  • students are not permitted to share computers or ipads

  • staff are also required to maintain social distancing between each other and in staff areas; in the classrooms this is far more difficult, and they are asked to exercise common sense to minimise risk.

The College canteen has been closed so far this term,  and we have been advised that it will re-open on Monday with a limited menu. This information will be emailed to students. Even if our canteen closes at some point, students are permitted to use the Holy Trinity canteen (although again with a limited menu).

Attendance at school is a tricky decision at the moment. The State Government has asked that all students return one day a week from Monday 11 May, and Delany has published a program that supports this request. Attendance is at parents’ discretion.  From our perspective, we strongly encourage students to return to school on their allocated days so that they begin to re-establish connection with their peers and teachers, use the opportunity to check in and check up with their learning, and start thinking about the important routine of attendance, application and study for their courses.

The academic community

Your support of our online teaching and learning programs is key to the success of your children. While our staff have made an enormous (and successful) shift to remote teaching, many students have understandably found this very difficult. What are the best ways to support learning at home?

  • a dedicated work space

  • a consistent routine

  • asking your child to show you how online learning is set up

  • encouraging your child to take a break away from a computer screen.

Mobile phones

Mobile phones will not be permitted in any classes from this point.  There is plenty of research to demonstrate that phones are a much greater distraction than support of learning.  Furthermore, there is no reason why a student needs to use a phone in the class. “I haven’t got a computer or ipad” is often stated, however, the College has more than enough IT devices to lend students for the day.

When a student uses their phone in class they will be provided with a warning to place it in their bag. If the student repeatedly uses their phone or is defiant about their phone, it will be taken from them and given to me. On the first occasion, the phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day. On further occasions the phone will be returned to a parent (not to the student). “Using the phone” includes:

  • checking the time

  • checking messages

  • using it to access school work

  • making and receiving call

  • … and any other explanation you can think of.

Please contact me at the College if you want to discuss this expectation.

The Patrician community

As I did last term, I ask that you keep our Patrician Brothers in your prayers. The majority of the Brothers are in the high risk age group and are (I hope) staying well away from our schools - even though that would break their hearts! St Patrick, watch over them.

Communicating with parents

Over the next weeks and months it will be essential that we are able to contact you. Do we have an up-to-date email address and/or mobile phone number? If not, or if you’re unsure, please send an email to delany@parra.catholic.edu.au to confirm. There are three key ways we stay in touch with you:

Text to mobile phone

  • Internet: Email, Skoolbag, Facebook

  • Letters: usually printed and distributed to students (and then also posted on Skoolbag).

  • St Patrick, pray for us.

An article by Dr Chelsea Hyde from the University of Melbourne, Five tips for Keeping Kids Learning at Home, helpful for supporting children in their remote learning. You may find the following summary of the advice given in the article beneficial as well.

Here are five tips for parents and carers who want to help keep their kids learning if they’re at home.

    1. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN DO

Give kids responsibility for tasks at home to help make them feel more in control like helping care for a sibling, looking after a pet, keeping their room tidy or assisting with meals which helps to focus attention on what can be done.

    2. ESTABLISH A DAILY ROUTINE

Pay attention to information shared by the school and . . . Support your child to maintain a routine while at home. Ensure that the daily schedule includes a balance of academic, creative, physical and social activities with clear expectations for wake-up and bedtimes.

    3. STAY CONNECTED

Providing opportunities to interact socially with peers will help children maintain connections and boost their mood. If your child is at home, give them a chance to connect with peers during their breaks, like they would during recess and lunch at school.

You can use the same technology to stay in touch with extended family, especially when children are used to visiting their grandparents or cousins regularly.

    4. STAY ACTIVE

Our kids spend a lot of time moving around at school, so it’s important to ensure that they are still engaging in activities they enjoy while they’re at home.

Take the opportunity to do something together, whether it be playing board games, or working on a project in the house or garden. It’s important to ensure that kids at home are still engaging in activities they enjoy.

    5. HANDLING ANXIETY

Listen to children and hear their concerns about what is happening around them. Remember that children will take a lead from adults about how to behave in difficult situations, maintaining a sense of calm will help children cope.

Hi everyone and welcome back to Term 2.

Usually, the first article after returning from the Easter break, is filled with stories and photos from the Palm Sunday procession, the Good Friday Walk and the various other community events that would have taken place in our Diocese. This year I don’t have those stories for you. Instead, what I have to share are comments from our students who will hopefully remind you that no restriction can stop us from showing love to one another, nor can it take away the joy of the risen Christ and His message of hope and new life.

Here’s how some of our Delany community celebrated Easter this year…

My family spent Easter this year by watching the Easter service mass on Channel 7, also by having a family lunch. - Christina Awad

The morning of Easter, my family and I watched the Our Lady of Lebanon Easter liturgy whilst lighting up candles and praying. Throughout the day, we reflected on Easter so as to never forget the true meaning. - Julie-Anne Habib

I spent my Easter watching the church service at OLOL with my family, and facetimed our extended family members to wish them a happy Easter. Don’t forget our family barbeque that was amazing and enjoyable. – Galia Germanos

For Easter, my family and I had set up the driveway as a mini church with the front being a TV and watched a live stream of our church service every day of Holy Week. We also had some activities for the younger siblings and then had a family feed on the afternoon of Easter Sunday. - Toaila Liutai

This Easter, due to the Coronavirus, myself as well as my family tried our very best to enlighten each other with Easter Spirit. The day began with my family gathering in the living room as we all sat together participating in Easter Mass which was live streamed on YouTube. Following the mass, we FaceTimed extended family wishing them a Happy Easter.

To conclude the day, my family and I had a small barbeque as we tried to entertain amongst ourselves as oppose to getting together with our usual extended relatives. – Charbel ElKhoueiry

Despite the difficult time our world was going through that didn't stop my family spending Easter in a way we always spent Easter just slightly different. It was difficult not being able to spend it with those we love and cherish but we did still spend Easter with those in our household. My family woke up at 5am and had morning prayer as it's a family tradition that every Easter we start off with a morning prayer.

We then had our prayer service later on that morning which we also included our other family members through facetime, we played games involving the meaning of Easter, giving Easter egg baskets to our nieces and nephews and ending our night with watching Passion of the Christ and just having family conversations.

Although we were very sad not being able to be gathered with all our family members we were still able to spend Easter with those we are close to. This Easter allowed me to cherish every single moment spent with family as some people didn't get this kind of opportunity during Easter. - Peta Mapapalangi

This year Easter was somewhat different being away from the Church, extended family and friends, yet Christ was alive in our midst and His presence was still felt.

Holy week is unquestionably one of the most significant and sacred times in the Christian calendar which unfortunately had to be spent at home this year. Nonetheless, during this period as a family we decided to strengthen our faith and celebrate in the joy of the Lord’s resurrection in a way we never imagined through preparing our physical home each day of the week, but also spiritually preparing our hearts for the empty tomb and risen Christ.

By placing palm branches in front of our home and attaching a crucifix on our front door as well as setting up a sacred space and following live streamed masses from Saint Mary’s Cathedral and our regular parish, we were reminded that although we are physically separated from our Church, our domestic Church at home still contains the presence of Christ and we as a family are still able to open the tombstone of our hearts and welcome Him into our lives.

I pray and am hopeful that the tombstone of the coronavirus will be rolled away and we, like Christ, can overcome such evil and God willing be welcomed back into our homes - our Churches in the near future.

    Stay positive and remain hopeful.

Jesus has risen, He has truly risen, and we are witnesses to this!

    The Delany Gym

In Term One our CAC 4 room was transformed into a gym that contains olympic weightlifting platforms, male and female bars, weighted plates, dumbbells, assisted smith machine, cage, boxes, battle ropes and workout benches.

The vision is for students to join the Delany Fitness Club and workout in the morning or afternoon with opportunities for beginners to participate in an induction during lunchtime.

At this stage, students will be required to complete a short survey detailing their experience using a gym and preferred times on a sign-up sheet on the Sport Google Classroom.

We hope here at the College that students will connect and feel a sense of belonging when joining the Delany Fitness Club and attain higher fitness levels and further pathways to pursue their athleticism.

    FOR MEDICAL ISSUES

Each year Delany College updates their records in order to keep your child healthy and safe in school and on excursions.

An important part of this process is having updated Health Care plans to let the school know about any allergies your child may have, for example Asthma or Anaphylaxis, and how staff should respond to your individual child's need.

These are updated each year to remain current so that any medical attention we administer to your child is consistent with their needs.

If your child has a new Health Care Plan please bring it to the Administration Office and ask that it be given to Mrs Collimore, Leader of Diverse Learning.
