School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program

The School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program is designed to bring together school communities to develop positive, safe and supportive learning cultures by helping to foster an environment that assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children.  As part of the SWPBS program, a rewards system has been developed to encourage students to always:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be a Learner

VCE Rural Revision Lectures

A series of Unit 3/4 VCE subject Revision Lectures has been made available to Nhill College students.  These lectures - which are traditionally held in larger centres like Ballarat, Bendigo and Melbourne, are being delivered online as a result of the current COVID-19 restrictions.  The lectures are being delivered on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of term.  Each presenter is an experienced VCE Unit 3/4 teacher and many of them have recent experience as VCAA exam assessors.  Each session is also being recorded, so students can review them - and go over the accompanying notes and slideshows - in their own time.  These sessions are being made available to students at no cost.

Nhill College has also arranged to provide our students with free access to other revision programs by Elevate Education.  These sessions will be conducted over the coming school holidays - more information will be sent out about these programs soon.

We are very lucky to have assembled a team of extremely passionate, committed and talented teaching and education support staff at Nhill College.  To help highlight the expertise we have within our own community, we have started to develop a series of staff profiles, starting with our wonderful Foundation/One teacher, Mrs Kerber.

Kinder Transition Q&A

A Q & A session will be held on Wednesday 2nd September for any families who would like to find out more information about enrolling their child in Foundation in 2021.  The session will be held remotely via Webex Meetings and will commence at 6.30pm.   Please register your interest by either phone on 53912111 or email - nhill.co@education.vic.gov.au and we can send you the link to join the session.

If you are unable to attend the Webex Q & A session, please have a look at our promotional video outlining the fantastic staff, facilities, programs and resources that Nhill College has to offer.  Please visit the attached link to view the Kinder Transition Video, and acquaint yourself with all that is great about our school.  To get a better view of some of the buildings and facilities at Nhill College, try out the link to our 360° Virtual Tour as well.

The Man Cave

On Monday 31st August, Nhill College will be hosting a number of online presentations from The Man Cave to all of our boys in Years 7 – 10.  The Man Cave usually delivers full day workshops specifically designed to support the psychological and emotional development of boys so they can become healthy young men.  We had arranged to have presenters from The Man Cave come and deliver these programs on-site this year but have had to postpone our booking a number of times due to the disruption caused by COVID-19.  Hopefully, we will still be able to conduct these workshops in Term 4.  In the meantime, we have been able to secure presenters from The Man Cave to deliver five 90-minute Online Check-in Circles via Zoom next Monday.

The boys in each class from Years 7 – 10 will participate in their own session on Monday 31st August.  Session times are as follows:

  •     Year 7X                10.30am - 12.00pm
  •     Year 8X                10.30am - 12.00pm
  •     Year 9X                1.30pm - 3.00pm
  •     Year 9Y                1.30pm - 3.00pm
  •     Year 10X              1.30pm - 3.00pm

This program will provide boys with the space, tools, permission and role models to connect with their mates and talk openly about how they are really going.

Boys participating in the programs will:

  •     Gain tools that enable them to better express their emotions
  •     Gain skills that strengthen their resilience
  •     Experience genuine and authentic connection with others
  •     Witness healthy and varied versions of masculinity through our facilitators

More details about their program can be found be reading the promotional flyer attached below.

The messages conveyed by The Man Cave are especially relevant to all boys – especially those who may be struggling to engage with school throughout this period of remote learning.  The opportunity to participate in this highly sought after and extremely important session has been fully funded by School Focused Youth Services and comes at no cost to families.  Parents are asked to support the program by actively encouraging their son to attend.

Welcome to Facebook

Staying connected to our students, parents and wider school community has never been more important than it is now due to remote learning and the wider constraints of Stage 3 Restrictions.  Nhill College has used Compass, our web page and the weekly newsletter to keep families associated with the school up to date with all of the events and activities that occur in and around the school each week.  To help broaden exposure to the school at this time, we recently launched a trial of our own Facebook page.  This page will be purely for promotion, publicity and to inform everyone of the upcoming events and happenings within the College.  All notes, questions, concerns or communication to staff regarding students still need to be directed to the College via Compass or on (03) 5391 2111.  To find our Facebook page, simply follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/nhillcollege/ or type Nhill College in the search function on Facebook. (Please be aware there is also an unofficial Nhill College facebook page that does not show the Nhill College logo).

Please like/follow the page and then you will be kept up-to-date with all of our posts.  We appreciate your patience at this time as we trial a new method of communication.

Student Surveys

Thank you to those students who have participated in the online Student Attitude to School Surveys throughout this week.  It has been great catching up and chatting to everyone as we have gone through that process.  All students in Years 4 to 12 are required to complete these surveys and a number of classes will complete them next week.

On-site Supervision Application Form

Parents and carers who require their child(ren) to attend on-site learning at school need to complete and submit the attached on-site Attendance Application Form by 3.00pm on Thursday of the week prior to their child(ren) attending on-site.

This is the time of year that we usually conduct Kinder Visits to introduce prospective students and parents to the staff and facilities at Nhill College.  Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, we are unfortunately unable to welcome any visitors on-site at the moment.  In an effort to make up for the fact that parents can't come to us, we have attempted to go to them, by putting together a promotional video outlining the fantastic staff, facilities, programs and resources that Nhill College has to offer.  Please visit the attached link to view the video, and acquaint yourself with all that is great about our school.  To get a better view of some of the buildings and facilities at Nhill College, try out the link to our 360° Virtual Tour as well (see below).

Information packs will be distributed soon to all families of current kinder children.  If you have any questions about anything you see in this video, please feel free to contact Mark Zimmermann or Kim Magrath at the school.

We have received some fantastic feedback about the new 360° Virtual Tour of Nhill College.  This enables us to provide everyone with a sneak peak at the fantastic facilities and resources that Nhill College has to offer for our students.  In this time of social restrictions due to COVID-19, parents are still unable to visit our school to make an inspection before enrolling their children.  By clicking on the attached link, we can hopefully overcome this inconvenience to some extent.  Having a 360° Virtual Tour of our school is also a great way to show existing parents, former students and members of the wider Nhill community just how much conditions have improved in recent times.  A link to the 360° Virtual Tour has also been placed on the school's website.

House Activities Competition

It is fantastic to see that entries have started to be received from students for the House Activities Competition.  There are seven categories that students can choose from:

  •     Sports (video of trick shots or sporting activity)
  •     Colouring Competition
  •     Freestyle Visual Arts
  •     Freestyle Performing Arts
  •     Pure photography
  •     Best Photo-shopped Image
  •     Funny Short Video

Now that we are all back in remote learning, having a competition like this might prove to be the perfect remedy for some of that extra 'down-time' students might have at home.

Entries can be submitted via email by sending them to one of your House Captains or one of the competition organisers.  Some of the people you can send them to are:

Mikayla Farmers: mlfar8@schools.vic.edu.au

Year 7-10 PE House Challenge – Virtual Race around Australia

During remote learning, students in Years 7-10 are encouraged to engage in our ‘Virtual Race around Australia’ House challenge. Each week students can post in MS Teams how many minutes of physical activity they completed. They are also welcome to share pictures or videos of their exercise. Each minute will be equivalent to 1km travelled. Miss Tink and Mr Hedt will collate the data and map out the distance each House has progressed each week. This will be advertised back to students in MS Teams and the college Newsletter. At the end of remote learning we will be able to see which House has travelled the furthest. We will also have prizes for which class covered the most distance. Happy exercising!!

House Challenge results for Week 3

After week three of our ‘House Race Around Australia’, Bond still holds a slender lead (98km, or 98 minutes of exercise!) over Macpherson. Both Bond and Macpherson completed a lap around Tasmania, calling in on places such as Hobart, picturesque Queenstown before departing Burnie to land back at Port Melbourne. Thankfully they had enough kilometres on the board to quickly get out of Melbourne (travel restrictions exempt) to head into East Victoria. Bond has finished their weekly travels at wonderful Sale. Situated in the Gippsland region, Sale has a population of around 15000. It is frequented by tourist visiting the Gippsland Lakes and also access the Victorian Alps in winter.

Macpherson finds themselves not too far behind in Morwell. What a beautiful spot to open your eyes to their rich culture of renowned art galleries. Overload your senses as you stroll blissfully through their famous rose gardens featuring over 4000 bushes.

Batson – You’re still stuck in Tasmania! However, enjoy your time in Hamilton, a small rural farming town. To be honest, not a great deal to do in Hamilton, so put on your runners on this week and catch up!

Remote Delivery of All VET Programs

There will be no VET programs delivered on-site in Horsham until further notice.  The latest VET Timetable that we have available has been attached.  Updates will be provided once more information is made available.

YEAR 11 STUDENTS AND PARENTS

Steer Right

Friday 4th September 10 – 11 am

For many years, Nhill College has supported our students to become safe road users by offering a comprehensive road safety program. This starts at Year 10 with the Road Smart workshop (which we hope to offer later in the year) and continues in Year 11 with Fit 2 Drive.

The Fit to Drive Foundation, maintain a vision is to see young lives free from road trauma.  While remaining dedicated to working together within COVID-19 restrictions to keep each other safe by staying home, their focus has remained unchanged.

We are really excited to share with you a new, online live facilitated, fast-paced and free webinar for Victorian Year 11 students, Steer Right. This program was developed in direct response to COVID-19 restrictions, asking young people to consider what their road use is like both now and in the future when we’re all back out on the roads.

This program is being offered free of charge for the remainder of Term 3.

The fast paced, one-hour program was designed for students conducting remote learning from home, and has been very successful in schools who have already conducted their session.

You can view a snapshot of the dynamic Steer Right program in the video below -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNq3PNDWQAM

All YEAR 11 students will shortly be sent instructions on how they will access the Steer Right program, which will be running on FRIDAY 4th SEPTEMBER. It is expected that all Year 11 students will attend the online workshop (regular classes will not run at this time).

If students or parents have any questions they should contact Mrs. Cole.

2020 UNIVERSITY ‘OPEN’ DAYS

Like almost everything in 2020, University Open Days will be done very differently this year.  Fortunately, for our regional students, this is quite advantageous, as they will almost all move to a “Virtual” Open Day format.  Whilst nothing beats a face-to-face experience, the virtual Open Days will allow our students to access more Open Days without the physical, time depriving and financial stress of driving long distances to attend.

Included in this Newsletter is a list of Virtual Open Day dates and websites.  If you would like to attend an Open Day please ensure you register on line so the university can send you the required link.  The list we have provided does not include every institution, so if you have an interest in an institution we have not included please check their website.  We also strongly encourage you to make contact with universities and TAFES if you have any questions at all – no question is silly and they will be more than happy to speak with you.

Don’t forget to ask about scholarships, alternative entry programs, application procedures, accommodation options and what they think their 2021 may look like – although, as we know, this can change rapidly.

Please come and see Mrs Hedt or Mrs Sampson if you have any questions or concerns.

ALTERNATIVE UNIVERSITY SELECTION MODELS:

We are approaching the time where current Year 12 students who are wishing to pursue university entry for 2021 will be looking into universities and courses.  This can be a stressful and overwhelming time.  Many students begin to get anxious about ATARS required.  The good news is, many universities offer alternative entry schemes.  They take extra things into consideration – not just that ATAR.  Student community involvement, where students live and individual circumstances can all be contributing factors.  A student may have made excellent contributions to their community, for example, and a university may decide that rather than the required 95 ATAR, they may be happy with a 75 instead -  because the student has demonstrated they are an all-rounder, a contributor and able to multi-task.  Another example may be a student living in Nhill is recognised as having many disadvantages due to internet issues, inability to access programs based in the city or extra travel requirements – a university may decide this student only requires an ATAR of 70, rather than 80 because of adversity.    These are just two examples of how these schemes can work.  This can alleviate a lot of pressure coming into exams.

We encourage students to look into whether their universities of choice have such schemes.  Some examples include the La Trobe University Aspire, ACU Community Achiever and Flinders University Principal’s Recommendation Scheme.  Students need to look into these carefully as they all have different application date windows, requirements and benefits.  We have attached a flyer to this newsletter highlighting many schemes, but please ensure you do your own research to ensure you are aware of any schemes from your university of choice.  Please read the requirements very carefully and come and see Mrs Hedt or Mrs Sampson for any help and assistance.

Winter Jackets

In accordance with the Nhill College COVID-19 Return to School Policy, some classes may operate with open windows (where practical) to promote fresh air flow indoors.  Students will be permitted to wear their winter jackets indoors during class times to help keep them warm in case of this eventuality.

All students from Years Foundation to 12 are again invited and encouraged to enter our annual Magazine Cover Competition.  Over the years we have had some incredible entries, not just the ones that were ultimately selected, but many others also.  Students have until 4th September to get their entries in to Mrs Sampson.  Hard copy entries can be handed in to the front office (named on the back) or entries can be emailed to natalie.sampson@education.vic.gov.au.

All entries need to reflect our school values of:

RESPECT

HONESTY

TEAMWORK

CONFIDENCE

EXCELLENCE

ENDEAVOUR

The winning cover entries will receive $50 each.  Entries can be from individuals, groups or as a class activity if a teacher wishes to include that in their curriculum.  If a group entry wins, the prize money will be shared equally; if a class entry wins the prize money will be allocated to the class at the teacher's discretion.

Rural Chances Scholarships (for apprentice/traineeships)

We know there are many great young rural Victorians looking for work or opportunities to train further and build their skills. We also know there are often many barriers to achieving these goals. To address these issues, Youthrive Victoria and its supporters have created Rural Chances Scholarships.

Rural Chances can help if you:

·         Have to travel long distances or move away from home to gain qualifications, or

·         Struggle with the many expenses associated with training and building your skills, and

·         Want to fill a skills gap in rural Victoria, and

·         Would like mentoring and networking opportunities.

Applications for Rural Chances Scholarships open in Term 3 and close in October each year. The online application process is really simple, and requires you to submit either a written application or a video application. Check out the website for more info.

Rural Chances scholarships are the vision of a regional philanthropist who has worked closely with Youthrive Victoria to design the scholarships. The aim is to meet the needs of rural communities by providing a skilled and flexible workforce.

What do you get with a Rural Chances Scholarship?

For 2020, there are at least 10 scholarships valued at $5000 to assist young people to move away from their home town or to assist with extensive travel required to complete training qualifications. Rural Chances scholarship recipients will receive extra care from a mentor and leadership and networking opportunities. Additionally, at least 10 smaller scholarships of up to $2000 are available for specific items to support training.

Applicants must identify what they need, how much it will cost and why they need it to complete their study. These smaller amounts can be used for equipment, course fees, tools of trade, travel costs, materials etc. Recipients will also be offered mentoring and leadership and networking opportunities.
