Our School Values:
- Respect
- Honesty
- Teamwork
- Confidence
- Excellence
- Endeavour
Staying connected to our students, parents and wider school community has never been more important than it is now due to remote learning and the wider constraints of Stage 3 Restrictions. Nhill College has used Compass, our web page and the weekly newsletter to keep families associated with the school up to date with all of the events and activities that occur in and around the school each week. To help broaden exposure to the school at this time, we recently launched a trial of our own Facebook page. This page will be purely for promotion, publicity and to inform everyone of the upcoming events and happenings within the College. All notes, questions, concerns or communication to staff regarding students still need to be directed to the College via Compass or on (03) 5391 2111. To find our Facebook page, simply follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/nhillcollege/ or type Nhill College in the search function on Facebook. (Please be aware there is also an unofficial Nhill College facebook page that does not show the Nhill College logo).
Please like/follow the page and then you will be kept up-to-date with all of our posts. We appreciate your patience at this time as we trial a new method of communication.
It is fantastic to see that entries have started to be received from students for the House Activities Competition. There are seven categories that students can choose from:
Now that we are all back in remote learning, having a competition like this might prove to be the perfect remedy for some of that extra 'down-time' students might have at home.
Entries can be submitted via email by sending them to one of your House Captains or one of the competition organisers. Some of the people you can send them to are:
Mikayla Farmers: mlfar8@schools.vic.edu.au
Adam Zimmermann: adzim@schools.vic.edu.au
Brock Stephens: bjste45@schools.vic.edu.au
Lucy Dorrington: lidor@schools.vic.edu.au
Corey Shurdington: cjshu3@schools.vic.edu.au
Rory Pilmore: rjpil3@schools.vic.edu.au
Dylan Cole: dmcol7@schools.vic.edu.au
Ruby James: rcjam2@schools.vic.edu.au
Lucy Blackwood: lmblal@schools.vic.edu.au
Or, you can send it to nhill.co@education.vic.gov.au
Alternatively, you can drop your entries off at the office. The final deadline for entries is Friday 9th October. Check out the full version of the flyer that appears later in the newsletter for further details.
During remote learning, students in Years 7-10 are encouraged to engage in our ‘Virtual Race around Australia’ House challenge. Each week students can post in MS Teams how many minutes of physical activity they completed. They are also welcome to share pictures or videos of their exercise. Each minute will be equivalent to 1km travelled. Miss Tink and Mr Hedt will collate the data and map out the distance each House has progressed each week. This will be advertised back to students in MS Teams and the college Newsletter. At the end of remote learning we will be able to see which House has travelled the furthest. We will also have prizes for which class covered the most distance. Happy exercising!!
After week three of our ‘House Race Around Australia’, Bond still holds a slender lead (98km, or 98 minutes of exercise!) over Macpherson. Both Bond and Macpherson completed a lap around Tasmania, calling in on places such as Hobart, picturesque Queenstown before departing Burnie to land back at Port Melbourne. Thankfully they had enough kilometres on the board to quickly get out of Melbourne (travel restrictions exempt) to head into East Victoria. Bond has finished their weekly travels at wonderful Sale. Situated in the Gippsland region, Sale has a population of around 15000. It is frequented by tourist visiting the Gippsland Lakes and also access the Victorian Alps in winter.
Macpherson finds themselves not too far behind in Morwell. What a beautiful spot to open your eyes to their rich culture of renowned art galleries. Overload your senses as you stroll blissfully through their famous rose gardens featuring over 4000 bushes.
Batson – You’re still stuck in Tasmania! However, enjoy your time in Hamilton, a small rural farming town. To be honest, not a great deal to do in Hamilton, so put on your runners on this week and catch up!
We decided that we could support all our students whilst they are learning from home with a range of wellbeing pages that we will attach to the newsletter each week. Please enjoy Week 4 activities and we hope they will help you out while we are all studying at home.
Please remember if you need some support from us, please contact the school on 53912111.
Don't forget you can always ring the Kidshelpline - 1800 55 1800, ANYTIME, ANY REASON.
Please note that due to the COVID-19 border restrictions our school photos date has had to be postponed until Term 4 with a new date to be advised.
Hope you are all staying safe.

We know that many girls in our school community will have strong ideas on the topic of “lifting us up”.
The competition involves writing a 400-600 word piece OR creating a 3-4 minute video in response to the question “How can women and girls empower each other and their communities in time of uncertainty and change?”
If any girls in Year 10 – 12 are interested in entering visit the website countrytocanberra.com.au
Or contact Mrs. Cole or Miss Foulds for assistance.
Steer Right
Friday 4th September 10 – 11 am
For many years, Nhill College has supported our students to become safe road users by offering a comprehensive road safety program. This starts at Year 10 with the Road Smart workshop (which we hope to offer later in the year) and continues in Year 11 with Fit 2 Drive.
The Fit to Drive Foundation, maintain a vision is to see young lives free from road trauma. While remaining dedicated to working together within COVID-19 restrictions to keep each other safe by staying home, their focus has remained unchanged.
We are really excited to share with you a new, online live facilitated, fast-paced and free webinar for Victorian Year 11 students, Steer Right. This program was developed in direct response to COVID-19 restrictions, asking young people to consider what their road use is like both now and in the future when we’re all back out on the roads.
This program is being offered free of charge for the remainder of Term 3.
The fast paced, one-hour program was designed for students conducting remote learning from home, and has been very successful in schools who have already conducted their session.
You can view a snapshot of the dynamic Steer Right program in the video below -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNq3PNDWQAM
All YEAR 11 students will shortly be sent instructions on how they will access the Steer Right program, which will be running on FRIDAY 4th SEPTEMBER. It is expected that all Year 11 students will attend the online workshop (regular classes will not run at this time).
If students or parents have any questions they should contact Mrs. Cole.

Rural Chances Scholarships (for apprentice/traineeships)
We know there are many great young rural Victorians looking for work or opportunities to train further and build their skills. We also know there are often many barriers to achieving these goals. To address these issues, Youthrive Victoria and its supporters have created Rural Chances Scholarships.
Rural Chances can help if you:
· Have to travel long distances or move away from home to gain qualifications, or
· Struggle with the many expenses associated with training and building your skills, and
· Want to fill a skills gap in rural Victoria, and
· Would like mentoring and networking opportunities.
Applications for Rural Chances Scholarships open in Term 3 and close in October each year. The online application process is really simple, and requires you to submit either a written application or a video application. Check out the website for more info.
Rural Chances scholarships are the vision of a regional philanthropist who has worked closely with Youthrive Victoria to design the scholarships. The aim is to meet the needs of rural communities by providing a skilled and flexible workforce.
What do you get with a Rural Chances Scholarship?
For 2020, there are at least 10 scholarships valued at $5000 to assist young people to move away from their home town or to assist with extensive travel required to complete training qualifications. Rural Chances scholarship recipients will receive extra care from a mentor and leadership and networking opportunities. Additionally, at least 10 smaller scholarships of up to $2000 are available for specific items to support training.
Applicants must identify what they need, how much it will cost and why they need it to complete their study. These smaller amounts can be used for equipment, course fees, tools of trade, travel costs, materials etc. Recipients will also be offered mentoring and leadership and networking opportunities.

If you are reading this, you obviously have access to the school newsletter. However, some families have asked how grandparents or community members can stay in touch with the school when they don't have access to Compass. The answer is that anyone can access the school's newsletter through the College website: www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au. Please advise any family, friends or interested members of the wider community, that the newsletter is the main source of information from the school and that it is available to anyone who would like to read it. Spread the word!
