Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM THREE WEEK EIGHT

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

While there are only two weeks until the end of term, there are certainly many activities planned for students to engage with. Weather permitting, PSSA sport will continue right up until the final day of term. Our debating team has their final debate as part of this year’s Inner West Schools’ Debating Competition. Our public speaking finalists will head to Annandale Public School to represent Rozelle in a local school competition. Stage One will enjoy a day at the Powerhouse Museum. The P&C will host an outdoor movie night and our Year Six students will star in the original production of Spyfall 2039. There is certainly lots happening in the final fortnight of Term Three!

This will be the final newsletter for the term as I will be taking a few days additional leave in the final week. I would like to thank the entire Rozelle community for their ongoing support and cooperation as we emerge from the challenges of COVID. This term especially, it has been wonderful to see our students participating in camps, performing arts festivals and sporting events which have been missing from the calendar over the past two years.

P&C - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Last week was the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of our Parents and Citizens Association. The AGM is held each year to elect an executive team. I would like to congratulate and introduce the following executive members:

President: Bella Berriman (mum to India and Jack)

Vice President: Lauren Scott (mum to Quinn)

Vice President: Carly Lowe (mum to Ben and Hugh)

Treasurer: Susan Stiehm (mum to Rafa)

Secretary: Nic Hansen (dad to Ira)

I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Claire Goldsmith and Michael McAviney who, this year are both stepping down from executive roles. Thank you for your time and effort in supporting the Rozelle Public School P&C and wider community.

Don't forget next Friday… the P&C have organised an outdoor movie night which promises to be lots of fun. My fingers and toes are crossed for good weather. All details can be found in this newsletter.

RETURNING TO RPS IN 2023

Is your child(ren) returning to Rozelle PS in 2023?  To help with essential planning we request all families complete this short survey. All responses will be kept confidential with only school executives accessing responses.

You will need to complete the survey for each of your children. For example if you have three children it will need to be completed three times. For our current preschool and Year Six families there is no need to respond.

https://forms.gle/xQZiSgs7q9iwkXcb6

Please complete the survey by the end of the first week of Term 4 - Friday 14 October 2022.

AMAZING ME

It was great to see so many Stage Three families attend last night’s Amazing Me presentation. The presentation, ‘Bodies, Babies and Puberty’ was delivered with positivity and provided students with empowering information. It certainly was a great starting point for future family conversations.

NAPLAN

Earlier this week, students in Years 3 and 5 received their 2022 NAPLAN results. NAPLAN provides parents and carers an opportunity to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At a school and classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress. It is important to recognise that NAPLAN is only one indicator of student progress and achievement. Teachers use a range of ongoing assessments and techniques to identify ‘where to next’ for students. One of these are the Reading and Numeracy Check-ins that all students in Years 3-6 will complete either this term or early Term Four.

ROOFING REPLACEMENT OF HERITAGE BLOCK

During the September holidays, the Department of Education Asset Management Unit will commence a roofing replacement project on our main block - the heritage building. The project is essential and this year’s weather events have highlighted the need for replacement . The scope of works is slow and complex as they are replacing the old slate tiles with new slate. The main block will be surrounded in scaffolding for all of Term 4 and will impact how students enter and exit the school. While roofers work above a classroom, the class will be relocated to another learning space. As principal I will be working closely with AMU and the contractor to ensure safety and minimal impact on the daily operations of the school.

CONGRATULATIONS….

  • Top Hat Miners - This Tournament of the Minds Team received Honours at the recent competition.

  • Vicente Golzi Braga - Last week, Vi performed on the stage of the Opera House as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music. His solo performance of Piano Man (he sang and played the piano & harmonica) was AMAZING!

  • Winners of the Public Speaking - Hugo Sturrock, Savannah Mork, Oliver Johnston and Eleanor Graham - Good luck next week at the local schools’ finals.

Operation Art - congratulations to Lara, Archie, Billy and Amelie whose artworks have been selected for display in this exhibition.

END OF YEAR DATES - IMPORTANT!

This year, the last day for students falls on Monday 19 December 2022. Being a Monday, the school understands some families may look to begin their Christmas vacation on the weekend prior. Therefore, the school will conduct all end of year traditions on Friday 16 December including: the Leavers Assembly, farewell arch and the signing of shirts for Year Six. Our Year Six families may like to note this date on their calendar.

KINDERGARTEN 2023

Our Kindergarten enrolments continue to grow and it is essential that parents of children starting school in 2023 submit the online application form as soon as possible. If you have a child starting school next year - please act now! If you have a friend or family member who is yet to submit their application form - now is the time! Once application forms are received and processed, the school will share important information regarding school visits and our Transition to School Program.

SPYFALL 2039 - YEAR SIX PRODUCTION

Throughout this term our Year Six students and staff have been preparing for the premier of Spyfall 2039. The production will feature our Year Six students in band, dance, choir and drama. The evening performance will be held on Thursday 15 September at 6pm. During the day all students will have the opportunity to enjoy the matinee show.

STAGE 3 CAMP

A huge congratulations to all Stage 3 students who attended camp last week. Teachers had a wonderful time watching students work together to complete challenges such as orienteering and making bottle rockets. It was so fantastic to see students support each other when faced with activities that pushed them outside their comfort zone. We are so proud! Thank you to Amelia Roberts, Tim Hartnett, Amy Horton, Angela Svinos, Lizzie McLaughlin, Caris Doyle, Tara Bryant and Christina Devitt for attending camp this year.

RECENT NEWS & ACTIVITIES

PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

Last Monday we held the Rozelle Public Speaking Finals in the hall, with students from across the school delivering fabulous speeches on topics ranging from ‘Bees need our help’ and ‘Children should be prime ministers’ through to ‘Paparazzi should be banned’ and ‘All families should have a pet dog’.

After being successful in their classroom competitions, students delivered their prepared and impromptu speeches in front of a panel of adjudicators and an audience made up of their peers. The students spoke confidently and assertively and should be very proud of themselves!

Unfortunately, there could only be one winner from each stage and the adjudicators really found it hard to pick from all the wonderful speakers. Our winners are:

Stage 1: Hugo S (2 Kgari)

Stage 2: Savannah M (4 Daintree)

Stage 3:

Year 6 - Oliver J (6 Komodo)

Year 5 - Eleanor G (5 Shark Bay)

Good luck to these students as they advance to the Iron Cove Public Speaking Competition on Thursday 15 September.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS

On Sunday 27 August two teams of Year 5 and 6 students visited Randwick Boys High School to compete in the 2022 Sydney East Tournament of Minds. For six weeks prior, the teams worked extremely hard to prepare solutions to challenges in Language Literature and STEM. They wrote their own scripts, made their own props, and delivered amazing creative performances on the day. The students also participated in a spontaneous challenge where they had to work together to solve a problem on the spot. Our STEM team was one of only three schools to take home honours in the STEM challenge. Both teams did a wonderful job and are to be congratulated on their fantastic efforts throughout the term!

ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all the students who represented Rozelle Public School in the Zone Athletics Carnival. All competitors should be commended for their team spirit and sportsmanship on the day. Rozelle had some outstanding results which include Davin C (4 Kakadu) being awarded Age Champion for the 10-year-old boys, Eloise R (4 Daintree) for breaking the record in the Junior Girls 1500m, and Ezra W (6 Komodo) for 2nd place Age Champion for 12-year-old boys. Overall, Rozelle PS finished 3rd place. We wish all athletes competing in the Regional Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 14 September best of luck!

2022 OPERATION ART

Congratulations to our Operation Art entries for 2022. Operation Art is an annual display of student artworks specially selected from NSW schools to show creativity, and to uplift and inspire. Many of the artworks will be hung permanently in hospitals and other public places after the show closes. Well done to Lara B (3 Iguazu), Archie F (2 Kgari), Billy J (5 Shark Bay) and Amelie N (5 Amalfi) on being selected to have their artwork displayed in this exciting exhibition. The show begins on 17 September and runs for several weeks, including the school holidays at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park.

Vi was a featured soloist in the Festival of Instrumental Music 'Mimosa' Concert, playing on a full grand piano, enjoying his own dressing room, waiting backstage with the crew and preparing for many weeks to showcase his talent. Both Mr Braiding and Ms Perestrelo attended the amazing concert with Vi's family and friends to watch Vi represent Rozelle P.S. Excelente Vi.

SAVE THE DATE - Y6 FAREWELL EVENING

A fun evening is being planned by an enthusiastic team of parents to farewell our Y6 students. The farewell evening will be held on Wednesday 14 December in the school hall. More details to follow, closer to the date.

NUT AWARE

A number of students at Rozelle have been diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to nuts. While it is not advised for the school to declare itself “nut-free” we are definitely a “nut-aware” school. This means that we ask parents/carers to carefully consider the food they provide for their child and avoid foods that contain nuts. Before sending in food for special occasions for your child’s class, please check with the teacher. The school appreciates everyone’s effort in keeping all our students safe and supporting their families to manage this difficult situation.

REMINDER ABOUT MORNING DROP OFF

Families are reminded that students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am unless they are attending OSH Club or a before school activity such as band rehearsal. There may be occasions where you need to drop your child off 10 minutes earlier. In these instances, students must go to the Peace Garden, where they sit and wait for teacher supervision to begin. Over the past few weeks, some students have been turning up to school as early as 7.45am. This is too early as supervision does not begin until 8.30am.

LOST PROPERTY

When parents are up at the school they may have seen the lost property trolley which is wheeled regularly into the Darling Street playground. Should your child misplace a hat, jumper, water bottle or lunchbox…you may find it in the trolley.

KINDERGARTEN 2023 ONLINE ENROLMENTS

P&C ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY TEAM

VICTORIA ROAD SAFETY GROUP

The Victoria Rd Safety Group continues to monitor the safety of students who cross at the intersection of Victoria Rd & Darling St to get to school. The group recently met with Kobi Shetty the local IWC Council member who is supportive and Kobi will add a motion to the next IWC meeting to garner support for the submission. Representatives on this important issue and are drafting a submission to be presented to Transport for NSW.

UNIFORM SHOP

We have had difficulties finding a volunteer to manage the uniform shop. Several of the surrounding primary schools outsource their uniform shop including Birchgrove PS and Orange Grove PS. As such, the P&C in consultation with the school has agreed to commence looking at the option of outsourcing, in a similar way to the canteen. All potential impacts and procedures will be considered, presented and consulted at future P&C meetings before deciding what is best for RPS to move forward with. As always we are committed to providing quality and affordable uniform options to the students of RPS.

A big thank you to Maitane Baenez for her tireless work in the uniform shop - ensuring orders are placed and fulfilled, keeping the students kitted out for learning!

The Uniform Shop is open for new and second hand sales on Friday mornings. Orders placed online via Flexischools before 5pm Thursday will be available to collect from the front office or OSH by Friday lunchtime. Size swap requests, returns for credit and donations of good quality second hand uniforms can be made via the front office at any time and our volunteers will action on Friday mornings. Enquiries can be made via rozelleuniformshop@gmail.com
