PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Congratulations Drummoyne PS

Congratulations to our athletics team who yesterday won the Inner West zone athletics carnival at Sydney Olympic Park.  This included the Champion School Shield, Overall Boys Point Score Shield, Overall Girls Point Score Shield and Proportional Points Shield.  This is an outstanding achievement and reflects the efforts of every student who put their heart and soul into every event.Thank you to Mr Roche for organising the team to attend the carnival, team managers Mrs Pegler and Mrs Page and all of our parents who supported the school even with the early start for the 1500 metre event.

Spring Carnival – A Time for Memories

Our lives are built on memories. For our children they will remember events, like the P&C Spring Carnival, and look back with fondness of the great time they enjoyed with family and friends. I would like to encourage all of our Drummoyne families to join us for this very special community event on Sunday 28th August. If you would like to volunteer on the day or on Saturday for setting up, please register on the P&C volunteer’s site:

https://signup.zone/dps-carnival

Spring Carnival Mufti Days

With just 10 school days to go until the P&C carnival (fete)... all students are invited to come to school dressed in mufti for the next two Fridays. This will promote the P&C Carnival and raise funds for the school.

On Friday 19 August students are asked to bring in a business voucher or cash donation to school or a gold coin. Each cash donation will be allocated to the student's class with the class raising the most money receiving a pizza party from Crust Pizza!

On Friday 26 August students are asked to bring in filled tombola jars, a bag of lollies or a gold coin.

August P&C meeting and Parent Workshop on the Learning Enrichment and Support Team

On Tuesday night, prior to the P&C meeting, executive staff Dianne Colb and Leigh Russ will lead a parent workshop from 7.00pm on the Learning Enrichment and Support Team.

The workshop will give parents insights into the process of referral, strategies used to support or extend students and the ways the school monitors student progress.  Practical ways parents can support their child's learning will be included.

The session will go for 20 minutes followed by questions finishing at 7.30pm. If you have anything you would like addressed in the workshop, please let Dianne or Leigh know.

Education Week Book Fair

I would like to join with Mr Neufeld, our teacher librarian, in thanking the parent community for your generous support of the Book Fair last week. Our students were delighted to be able to purchase books from their favourite authors and on topics of interest.

As a result, $13,266 worth of books are now being read in homes across the school community! A very special 'shout out' to all of our grandparents and grand-friends who kept up family traditions of supporting our Book Fairs.

Kiss and Drop Zones

Thank you to the parents who take great care each day to drive and park safely around the school. Your diligence contributes greatly to the safe arrival and pickup of our students. In the interest of the continued safety of our children and courtesy to other families, parents are asked not to park in the ‘NO PARKING’ areas at the side of the school. These are areas to drop off and pick up children with a 1-2 minute limit. Drivers are not permitted to leave their vehicles. Please use this area as a ‘Kiss and Drop’ zone. Your help in maintaining safety around our school is greatly appreciated.

Please know that rangers from Canada Bay Council have been patrolling outside the school gates and pedestrian crossing this term. The following fines can apply: $194 and 2 demerit points for no parking  or $349 and 2 demerit points for no stopping.

P&C Spring Carnival - Sunday 28 August - Volunteers needed

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Meningococcal disease

Meningococcal disease is a rare but serious illness that usually affects babies and young children, adolescents and young adults.

There are several strains of the bacteria that can cause meningococcal disease (A, B, C, W and Y). In NSW, the most common strain is the B strain.

Meningococcal disease can develop within hours of symptoms first appearing and can be fatal. Winter and spring are the peak seasons for meningococcal disease in NSW.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Sudden onset of fever
  • Pin-prick rash changing to large red-purple blotches
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Limb/joint pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Neck stiffness
  • Dislike of bright lights

A rash does not always appear and not all of the symptoms of meningococcal disease may be present at once.

If students present with these signs or symptoms, parents/carers should be contacted and immediate medical care sought.

People with symptoms should seek medical care again if the illness gets worse, even if this is shortly after the previous visit.

The peak of meningococcal disease is normally seen in NSW in late winter to spring.

Pets on Site

While it adds to the sense of community when our pets are brought to school at pick-up times, under the Companion Animals Act 1998 (NSW), Section 14 and in the interests of safety and hygiene, dogs are not allowed on school grounds.  Thank you for your understanding.

Class of the Week - Class 5H

Class 5H are very proud of their impressive artworks based on inspiration from the American glass artist and sculptor, Dale Chihuly. Their designs, drawn on polystyrene plastic sheets, were placed in the oven to form a rigid and durable sculpture. Students showcased the sculptures during Education Week and the designs are now on display near the office.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-19 Update

COVID-smart settings in Term 3

Many of our existing COVID-smart measures continue into Term 3, including:

  • staying home if unwell, even if you have a negative RAT, until you are free of symptoms

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and close contacts able to return to school

  • strongly encouraging mask wearing, particularly for the first 4 weeks of term

  • strongly encouraging all eligible students and their families to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and the flu

  • maximising natural ventilation

  • good hygiene practices

  • strict requirements for close contacts attending school

  • responding to local COVID-19 conditions

Some things are changing this term including:

  • COVID-19 vaccination policy update – the mandate requiring COVID-19 vaccination will be lifted for staff in most school settings from 1 August 2022.  We will continue to encourage all staff, students and our school community to keep up to date with their vaccinations, including getting a booster shot when eligible.

  • Boosted day cleaning – our cleaning model has shifted slightly and will now be more concentrated during school hours.
