Principal News

I hope you're all well and warm on this, another wild weather August weekend. It was nice to see a glimmer of Spring in the sunshine yesterday! I hope you all found a good reason to get outside with the family.

Before I get into the nitty gritty, I wanted to send out best wishes and healing thoughts to Sam, from myself and our whole school community. In an unfortunate accident last week, Sam fell and broke her wrist. She's safely through surgery and resting at home.  Sam has been an irreplacable support for our school throughout the remote learning period and we'll miss her while she recovers but we hope she finds peace  and quiet in this time at home and recovers quickly.

Food Bank

A reminder that we still have a lot of food sitting here that you are all more than welcome to collect and take home. In a tricky and scary time, we hope that this little gesture could something of help to you and your family. Please get in touch to arrange a pack pick up.

School Recipe Book

Keep your eyes peeled tomorrow for an exciting announcement video. As a whole school celebration, and way to come together during this time, we thought it might be a great idea to create a STAPS Cookbook. With many special and delicious family recipies floating around, we invite you all to write down, cook, and share a picture of one or more of your favourite recipes. Our aim is to collect your recipes throughout the week and collate them, before sharing them with you all. Please, take this is a fun activity to enjoy with your family . Please send through your recipe and a fun picture through to the school email or through to your child's teacher.

School Council

I feel that we are so lucky to have our special School Council! We had our fourth Virtual School Council meeting last week. I presented the draft Annual Report for 2019 and we spent the hour reflecting about our school's journey over the past 18 months and our hopes for the year ahead. We look forward to holding a whole school community next term to reflect and plan together. We were also able to take a breath of relief, celebrating the submission of another grant submission. Working as a group, we aimed high, looking for funding to resurface and roof out basketball court. Fingers are crossed!!

Student Focus

Demonstrating Responsibility, Courageousness and Determination

Skye Smith, we are so proud of the amazing effort that you and your family are making during this remote learning period.

Not only do you attend every meeting and conference, and complete work to the best of your ability, but you reach out with your unique thoughts and ideas and challenge everyone's thinking in our group and class chats. We are so proud of the energy and effort that you're putting into your learning. You should be incredibly proud of yourself.

Success story from home learning!

Home learning is a pretty tough job. That said, it for some of us, it has been a surprising time to shine. Archie is one of those students that has managed to excel in this difficult time.

With the support of his trusty grandfather, Archie has doubled down on achieving his goals, with great success. You have shown great responsibility and courage. We wanted to take the opportunity to make sure you know that the effort you are putting in is recognised and worthwhile.

Keep up the amazing work.

Prep / One News

The Prep / One class have been learning facts about our oceans as part of National Science Week. Many were surprised to find out that the sea is so salty you cannot drink it. Some other interesting facts were that the Mariana Trench in the Pacific ocean is the deepest part of the ocean. One sad fact was that our oceans are getting more and more polluted and the Prep/One class wondered how we could fix this problem.

This week we are reading books by Australian author Alison Lester. She writes and illustrates beautiful books based on her experiences and many of the illustrations are recognisable places in Gippsland and other places she has travelled. In her book 'Ernie Dances to the Didgeridoo', Ernie writes letters from Arnhem Land to his friends back home. The Prep/Ones have had a go at writing their own letters to people they have missed seeing during Stage 4 Lockdown. Some are already in the post and some are getting sent as a photo via email. It is so nice to receive a letter, although I think the email versions will arrive a lot faster at the moment!

2/3 News

Last week the 2/3 class took a step back from our inquiry to recognise national science week. The theme this year was Deep Blue: an exploration of our oceans. Students put their scientist hats on and engaged in an experiment designed to simulate the ocean and understand the concept of density.

This coming week we doubling down on our inquiry into South America, Africa and the environments those continents contain. We will be exploring these places through our reading and math session, researching and graphing to deeply understand these locations.

The 2/3 finished their class novel last week; "Famous Five on a Treasure Island." While we were saddened to say good bye to Julian, Dick, George, Anne and Timmy, the students were excited to meet the new protagonist in our new novel; "Storm Boy."

4/5/6 News

To celebrate National Science Week last week, the whole class conducted an eggcellent experiment to test which ingredient, when added to water, would make an egg float. With many varied results it was generally concluded that, when a decent amount of each ingredient was put in the water, the salt was the most successful at making the egg float.

This week in the grade 4/5/6 classroom we have be presenting our YOP's, that the students have been working on all term. Despite many technological difficulties, the whole class showed great patience and resilience when it came to presenting and viewing each others projects. They also gave excellent constructive feedback to help their peers become better learners.

Now that the class has completed their YOP's, we will be moving on to our mini inquiry unit which is going to be about Australian history and migration. The students have already expressed many strong opinions about the topic and I can not wait to see them continue to develop their ideas and understandings.

Specialist Update

STEM -

This week was all about better containers. We looked at what makes containers useful and how reusable containers are the future. To develop our own amazing containers we had to think about good design principles and what makes a container useful for us. This resulted in some really clever and thoughtful designs which we’ve got below. There's also a couple of brilliant videos which you can see on the blog: http://sugarloafstem.global2.vic.edu.au/2020/08/25/week-6-term-3-s-t-e-m-summary-3/

A reminder that we've got a science week competition running too check out the details om the blog: http://sugarloafstem.global2.vic.edu.au/2020/08/11/national-science-week/

For families not used to this much together time, irritability and tempers may flare. Setting and enforcing rules for calm, respectful interactions in your home promotes critical stability and mental health in your kids.'

Michael Carr-Gregg ran a great seminar this week that explored parents current challenges. It was fantastic but, unfortunately, booked out very quickly. Fortunately, we are lucky to have recieved a copy of the summary to share with you. Download the PDF to read more about how you can support your fmaily and children through this challenging time.
