Post School Options

The transition from school to further education, vocational training or employment is an important time for young people. It provides them with an opportunity to access information and make choices about their future after leaving school. At SGHS we try to provide our students with as much information as possible, in the hope that will be able to make informed choices when the time comes. Our Year 12 students recently travelled to the University of New England in Armidale to attend a series of HSC workshops. This was a double bonus for them as they had the chance to check out UNE as well as deepen their understanding of some of the courses they are studying.

Grafton Eisteddfod

Once again SGHS played host to the Grafton Eisteddfod. It was great to see so many schools competing in such a wide variety of categories. The choirs were fantastic and the small ensembles were great but best of all were the dancers. Congratulations to our dance group who won their section.

State of Origin

This week a bus load of fantastic students traveled to the State of Origin in Brisbane where there were over 52,000 people at the game. Although the Blues lost, everyone had a great time and I would like to thank the staff who supervised and the parents of the students who picked them up from school in the small hours of Thursday morning.

State of Origin Game 1 Excursion

What an amazing opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a live State of Origin match! 50 lucky students travelled to Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday to see the first State of Origin match for 2019. We arrived a couple of hours before kick off to enjoy the pre-game entertainment and the weather was fantastic. The game had us all on the edge of our seats the whole time and there was big rivalry between the Maroons and Blues fans! Thank you to all the teachers who made this excursion happen.

Grafton Schools Eisteddfod

Congratulations to our South Grafton High School dancers who received first place in the Year 7-10 Dance section at the Grafton Schools Eisteddfod this week. The dancers have worked extremely hard during sport time to produce a fantastic performance that impressed the audience. The adjudicator said that the girls displayed great technique and that the performance connected very well to the music. Well done girls.

Clontarf Gagu News

We have had a fantastic fortnight in terms of our activities in SGHS. We have loved getting out and about in the school, playing a bit of footy and getting to know the awesome young Indigenous men at SGHS.

The boys are coming into the academy room and challenging each other every day on the table tennis table, and their skills are improving out of sight. We’ve also shared some awesome, hearty lunches with the boys and have introduced Clontarf to them. There are already some great positives coming out of working with the young men, who are engaging with us and the values we are encouraging them in.

We have been busy handing out enrolment forms over the past week and have already had several returned to us. We hope to see many more returned throughout next week, and for anyone who has lost or needs to receive an enrolment form they are encouraged to come to the Clontarf room at the bottom of B Block and ask Stumpy or myself.

Upcoming Important Dates:

  •  Wednesday 12th June: Parent BBQ and Info session - 3:30-4:30.

We will be putting on a BBQ for parents of our boys in Clontarf who would like to know more information about our program and how we will be working with them.

  •  Thursday 13th June: First morning training session – 7:30.

Our bus will be conducting local pickups from 6:30. Any Clontarf boys who can make their own way to the school need to meet at the Clontarf room at 7:15. We will then make our way down to the oval for training. After which the boys will be given a hot BBQ breakfast and can prepare for their school day.

  •  Friday 14th June: Good Bunch Lunch – Lunchtime in the Clontarf room

  •  Tuesday 18th June: NO MORNING TRAINING – Year 7 Rugby League Gala day in Kempsey. Permission notes to come.

BounceUp

The team from BounceUp attended the South Grafton High School on Tuesday to talk with our year 11 students about dealing with the pressures associated with school. BounceUp uses the theory that “sport replicates life and to succeed in any environment or in overcoming change and uncertainty, people need resilience skills now more than ever”.

Maths Homework Help

Are you needing help in Maths? The Maths Staff are offering assistance on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in the Library. Come on your own or get a group of friends together. All are welcome.

New football jersey

Over the coming months we are replacing some of our sporting uniforms. New designs will be predominately red in colour and feature the lion mascot and Aboriginal Art. The Aboriginal art was designed by Year 11 students Damon (pictured below left), Isaiah and Jamal (Year 10). Here students are displaying out rugby league, rugby union and oztag jerseys.

Mathematics Tutoring

Some parents have made enquires about outside Mathematics Tutoring for their students.

We have a number of senior students who are keen to offer this service at reasonable rates. This is an outside of school service that SGHS supports.

Benefits of Mathematics Tutoring:

*building confidence

*extra explanation of content not understood in class

*greater speed and accuracy in answering question

*focussed learning time

*setting goals and managing due dates

Feel free to phone Mrs O’Connor (Head Teacher Mathematics) for a Senior Student Tutors’ contact details if you are interested.
