Principal Report

Dear Parents and carers,

World Teachers' Day 2022

This Friday, we celebrate World Teachers' Day and we pause and thank our wonderful staff for the amazing work they do both within our school and the many hours outside of school time to make learning relevant, challenging and fun for our students.

Thank you for all the

Hours you spend,

Attention you give,

Needs that you tend,

Knowledge you pass on.

Offering guidance,

Undaunted by much.

Time you spend planning,

Efforts you make,

Angles to learning,

Chances you take.

Here’s to our teachers,

Each one a gem.

Recognised now, we

Salute them!

Stage 3 Major Excursions

Last Thursday our Year 6 students returned safely from a fantastic excursion to Canberra, deepening friendships, exploring ACT sights and attractions and consolidating their learning about our democratic government. Thank you to the Stage 3 teachers for investing their own time to ensure both this excursion (and the Year 5 GABC excursion) were so successful.

Multi-Age Classes

All DoE schools receive an annual allocation of teaching staff based upon actual student numbers enrolled within the school. Each year, some of our classes are straight grade and some are multi-age or ‘composite’ (i.e.: have more than one grade within the classroom) which enables appropriate class sizes, aligns to curriculum and can enhance learning. Extensive research shows it makes no difference to performance whether students are in a straight or multi-age class. It is the teacher and the relationships built with students that play a key and significant role in the development of students.

Farewell Deb

At a special assembly last Friday, our students sang a special song with lyrics written to honour Deb our canteen manager, on her retirement. Video footage from the assembly will be uploaded onto our FACEBOOK page later this week.

Have a great week.

School Development Days (Monday 19 December 2022 and Tuesday 20 December 2022)

As part of the NSW Department of Education’s Quality Curriculum Reform rollout (2023-2025), the state Minister for Education has announced an additional School Development Day at the end of this year – Monday 19 December 2022.

The NSW Government is reforming the curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12 by 2024, so that every student is prepared and ready for their future.

During the School Development Days, teachers will participate in professional learning for the implementation of the new curriculum, deepening their understanding of the new syllabuses and strengthening teaching and learning practices to facilitate delivery.

The last school day for 2022 for all students will be Friday 16 December 2022.

Attendance Roadmap for Successful Learning

As part of our school’s focus on student engagement and achievement in learning, we have created a new Attendance Roadmap so students, staff and families can track the positive impacts that regular attendance to school can have on children’s learning and wellbeing outcomes.

We are currently seeking parent feedback as to how we can best provide families with their child’s attendance rates. We would appreciate our parents and carers providing feedback via the very short survey available here.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

At Wamberal Public School, we are safe, respectful learners. This week, all students have been learning about being safe, respectful learners during wet weather. Teachers are rewarding students with SRLs for demonstrating the school’s expectations of safe, respectful learner behaviour.

Kindergarten 2023

Our Wambles Transition to Kindergarten 2023 program is starting soon. The onsite sessions are a great opportunity for children to familiarise with their new school and staff, helping them form first connections with their school community prior to starting school. Whilst the children are having a ‘practice’ at big school, parents are invited to attend the parent sessions which include connecting with school staff, building connections with other parents, and learning more about the school.

Children need to be enrolled at the school before attending the onsite sessions. Parents who are yet to enrol their child are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Please contact our school office on 4384 1111 for more information.

Have a great week everyone.

Currently reading a new Spooktober title — The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud. This one is for older, confident readers who can follow a complex plot. It has some moderately scary moments blended with crime and problem-solving. The young ghost-hunting detective characters are likeable and realistic with a sense of humour and flaws that they each acknowledge. Working together, they combine their individual talents to both deal with a variety of ghosts and solve a crime. Recommended for strong readers aged 9+.

The Screaming Staircase is the first title of the Lockwood & Co series.

WPS P&C

Thank You

Debbie Hodgson would like to thank the school and the community for the amazing send off she received on Friday. She will miss you all.

Volunteers needed in the Canteen

The P&C is seeking volunteers to assist in the successful operation of the canteen. No experience is necessary and we would welcome parents, carers or grandparents who have as little as an hour free to help in the canteen, either with lunch order preparation or counter service. If you are able to assist or would like further information, please email president@wamberalpandc.org or phone Damien on 0400 761 976.

Attention Year 6 Families

Each year 6 student is being asked to participate in a fundraising project for the year 6 formal to ensure we can keep lower ticket prices for all. All year 6 students have been issued with a unique barcode that can be scanned when depositing used cans and bottles at any Return and Earn collection point. If you haven't received a barcode or your family would like more than one, please send a private message to the Wamberal P&C Facebook page and we will make sure you get one asap. Please get involved! Rope in neighbours, family and friends to help get the dollars coming in for this fundraiser. We appreciate any and all help. Every can or bottle will help. If any other members of the school community would like to assist with fundraising with your own barcode, please message us at facebook.com/wamberalpandc.

Shop and Support our School

Did you know that buying groceries at a Ritchies IGA Supermarket can help support our P&C? Wamberal Public School P&C is one of the recipients you can elect to support when you register for a free Ritchies card or download the free Ritchies Card App for your mobile phone. Our P&C has been fortunate to receive more than $8000 since the inception of the program.

Spread the word to family and friends. If they live far away and shop at a Ritchies IGA near them, they can still select our P&C as their nominated recipient

Chaplain's Corner

How often do you check in with your children about how they are feeling? Or check in with yourself about how you are feeling. It can be easy to go (or rush) through a day and feel happy, sad, stressed, excited, worried and any other number of feelings without even batting an eyelash. Or maybe without noticing. Or maybe even only noticing the yucky ones, leaving us feeling less than content.

One of the factors that enable humans to build resilience is being able to identify how we are feeling. Subsequently, we can do something about it to support ourselves. Whether it’s making a phone call to share wonderful news or taking a walk to calm the stress. Doing something about it becomes much tougher though when we don’t identify what is actually going on. Our children can be left at the mercy of big emotions when they don’t learn how to identify them and develop positive coping skills. That often means that families can be left at the mercy of a child’s big emotions. Often that is unpleasant at best and at worst it has a lasting impact on family relationships.

Today, I’d love to point you to a great article with a free Mood Tracker resource for kids by our friends over at Very Special Tales. The author does a great job digging into many different uses and benefits of using a Mood Chart and provides some varied tools for free at the end of the article to suit your potential needs.

To me, some of the great benefits of using a mood tracker are:

  1. Creating an opportunity to reflect on how one is feeling in the moment and raising awareness and mindfulness about one’s emotions.
  2. Tracking patterns in mood, especially if someone is getting stuck in ‘always’ experiencing a negative emotion. For example, you might notice that morning is difficult every Monday, but every day after school is positive as they’ve had a good day.
  3. Increasing conversation about emotions in a safe and healthy way. This can sometimes be an avenue to children communicating more about their day/experience with an adult.
  4. Being able to reflect and make changes. If we refer back to number 3, over time you can look at patterns and talk about why that might be and what can be done to make typically difficult times better. This can give individuals a sense of empowerment that they can do something about the situation.
  5. Raising awareness of a variety of emotions, especially if one is stuck in thinking things are bad all the time. We can highlight positive emotions and remind our children (or ourselves) that nothing is bad all the time. We can look for the moments of light.

Noticing our own emotional responses gives us a lot of information and power. Mood trackers are one tool that help us to be deliberate in developing resilience. And if you using a mood tracker doesn’t resonate with you, I encourage you to find other ways to develop emotional intelligence and resilience.

If you do try out a mood tracker (for yourself or your children) and you find there are patterns that indicate concern, please reach out for some support. A visit to your GP can help with referrals to appropriate services and, as always, our wonderful friends at Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800), LifeLine (13 11 14) and 13Yarn (13 92 76) are there to help.

3-6 Choir Performance

The 3-6 Choir will be putting on a spectacular performance of the song "Monster" which they have been practising throughout Terms 3 and 4. Parents and carers are invited to attend the 3-6 assembly on Monday 31 October at 12:15pm. Please register your attendance by clicking here.

Garden Club

Garden Club has been hard at work this year (when we can in light of the rain!). We are finally seeing some wonderful produce - strawberries, radishes, spinach, purple climbing beans and herbs! It is loads of fun to pick and share all of our harvest together. Today we planted more seeds and will hopefully have seedlings to plant out in a few weeks.
