COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD

Open from Wednesday 9 September

Invitation to Virtual Open Day Wednesday 9 September 2020

Dear Principal, Executive staff, Stage 3 teachers and Parents,

I am writing to you to let you know about the opportunities available to girls enrolling at Sydney Girls High.

We would be very pleased to meet your Year 5 and Year 6 students and families virtually, particularly to highlight what a quality public school in our NSW Department of Education system can provide and to dispel some of the myths about the nature of selective secondary schools.

Sydney Girls High has a long tradition of outstanding achievement since 1883 in many fields; academic, debating, public speaking, performing arts, sport and leadership. The alumni of the school are found in all professions as leading women in government, law, medicine, business, science, the public service, the arts and design.

A genuinely diverse and extensive range of co-curricular options enables girls to choose and pursue experience in lesser known sports such as Fencing, Snow sports, Water Polo and Rowing, along with programs in more familiar sports like Netball, Basketball and Hockey. Central to the performing arts program are Dance and Drama ensembles, and a highly regarded instrumental music program featuring orchestra, stage band, symphonic wind ensemble, strings and vocal and choral music. There are many clubs and activities on offer such as Chess, as well as community and global citizenship platforms including Social Justice and Sustainability.

Our broad curriculum ranges across Technologies, including Textiles, Food, Engineering and Information Technology; LOTE represented by French, Latin, Japanese and Chinese; CAPA: Visual Art, Music and Drama as well as the full range of Science, Mathematics, and HSIE subjects including all available Stage 6 extension courses.

We are extraordinarily fortunate to have a dedicated Rowing Facility at Tarban Creek, Hunters Hill as well as the main campus at Moore Park, possessed of excellent teaching and learning facilities. These resources and opportunities are available to students in a public school setting with a cost to parents which is negligible compared to the fees and charges in non-government schools throughout Sydney and NSW.

We traditionally hold our Open Evening in early September enabling families to see what the school has to offer as well as an opportunity to meet current students, staff and parents. This year it is Wednesday 9 September in a Virtual Tour. Please register your interest at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SGHS_OPEN_DAY_2020 and we will send you a link. We extend a very warm “online” welcome to members of your school community.

Yours sincerely,

Andrea Connell - Principal
