End of Year Concert

We are looking forward to our end of year concert in week 8, Tuesday 6 December. The timetable for the event is:

·        From 5.00pm: Family picnic on the school grounds/lawn area. This is a dry event so no alcohol is to be consumed.

·        Please bring your own picnic dinner or pre order a pizza from Santi Pizza. The canteen will also have food and drink items to purchase over the counter on the night.

·        Class performances to be presented in the gym:

5.15-5.30pm: School choir

5.30-6.00: Classes – Springer & Perry/Field & Cailes/Williams, Cook, Withall, Papastamatis.

 6.00-6.15: Instrumental students

6.15-6.45: Classes – Evans & Burner, Johnston, Peters, Roberts, Dance Troupe.

6.45-7.00: Instrumental students

7.00-7.30: Classes – Kitchin, Boere & Jones, Wuttke, Buckley.

·        Prior to their performance, students are to wait on the Metcalfe Lawn with their teacher. Each class will be called into the gym for their performance. Please note that children from Mr Springer, Ms Perry & Ms Voulstaker-Field and Ms Cailes and Mrs Williams classes are to meet in their classroom at 5.00pm.

·        After each performance, students will go back to class with their supervising teacher. Parents are required to pick their child up after each session. If you have children in a future session, there will be sufficient time for you to go and collect your child and return to the gym if needed.

·        To assist with seating arrangements, children who are watching performances are to sit at the front of the gym on the mats.

Please be aware of other requests and arrangements:

·        All children will need to have a parent/carer in attendance to provide supervision.

·        Parents/carers watching the performance can enter the gym via the main entrance doors.

·        For safety reasons we request that no bikes or scooters are ridden on school grounds during the night.

We are looking forward to a much valued and enjoyable community event.

2023 Class Planning

The organisation of classes continues to progress and will be finalised in the coming weeks. Based on current projected enrolments, we will have 15 classes (which is inclusive of our junior primary special needs class). The class configurations will be: JP special class, 2 x reception classes, 2 x year 1 classes, 2 x year 2 classes, 1 x year 3, 1 x year 3/4, 1 x year 4, 1 x year 4/5, 2 x year 5 classes and 2 x year 6 classes.

Every effort is being made to ensure each class has a balanced profile (gender, academic achievement, friendships) and we trust families understand that not every request or accommodation can be catered for due to class numbers and cohort sizes.

Later this term, in week 9, students will participate in a transition lesson whereby they will visit their new classroom and meet their teacher. We acknowledge that children will respond differently to this change. They have a strong sense of anticipation when new classes are announced, and when they discover that they have not been placed with their ‘best’ friend, there can be a sense of disappointment. The experience of transitioning into a new environment is a great way for students to build important life skills that they will need as adults. We ask that you support your child through this experience and frame it in a positive way.

 End of Year Reporting Information

End of year reports will be made available to families on Thursday 15 December and will provide a summary of your child’s achievement for this year. A student who receives a ‘satisfactory’ rating for their achievement is demonstrating what is expected at their year level, with the grade equivalent being a C. Students who are working above what is expected for their level will receive an excellent or good rating, the equivalent of an A or B grade respectively. Students who have yet to achieve their year level standard will have demonstrated minimal (D) or partial (E) achievement. End of year reports will be able to be accessed via an online platform. If you require assistance with setting up your login details please contact the front office for assistance.

Remembrance Day 2022

The school held a Remembrance Day ceremony in week 4 with our upper primary students leading the service by talking about the significance of this day as well as reading aloud The Ode and In Flanders Fields. Also on the day, another group of senior students represented our school at the local Henley Beach community service. It was pleasing to observe the positive level of respect shown by all students during our service.

New School Hat for 2023

HBPS is introducing a new reversible adjustable bucket hat from 2023.

The navy side will have the school logo screen printed in gold and the reverse will be your assigned house colour.

Orders for these hats will be available from Westside School Wear from Monday 28 November.

The current broad brimmed hat can still be worn until the end of 2024.

Lost Property

We have a number of lost property items that need to find their owner.

All items are located in the STEM area outside the front office.

Please come and take a look to see if something belongs to you.

Mr Springer's Reception class

This term for Science the Reception Sunrays have been investigating how to be sun smart by using UV sensitive beads. First we made our beaded bracelets and discovered that the UV beads change colour when exposed to UV light. From this, we have further investigated ways to protect ourselves from the harmful UV rays. This included posing many questions like ‘can you get burnt in the shade of a tree?’ We’re now continuing to make observations and discoveries by using our UV beads in different situations.

The SA maritime museum is a great place to visit.

“Wow did you know that the cannon is 219 years old and we get to go on a boat all over the water! You also get to go on ketch, the best ship ever! All at the awesome displays plus so much more at the magnificent maritime museum.

You get to see some pretty cool items at the maritime museum. For example, skeletons! There’s dinosaur skeletons, dolphin skeletons, shark skeletons and more skeletons. I’ve never seen so many bones in my life! Another cool thing to find is all the different class of rooms, there’s first class , second class and third class. First class is pretty good, second class not so much and in third class I don’t know how they could sleep. They have the most uncomfortable beds and the most disgusting food such as pickled fish , sugar, dirty water and cabbage! EWW!

You also got to go on a boat trip over the amazing Port River, on the great boat Archie. You get to see amazing and fascinating animals such as harmless jellyfish , dolphins, fish and more! It's completely safe with life jackets, glass and walls all around you so you can see the river and be safe. You also have people all around you so even if you fell in (which you won't) you will be completely fine.

If you go to the awesome Maritime Museum you get to go on the ketch which is an old intriguing ship. It doesn’t sail anymore but you still get to go on it, but on land. There’s are many amazing rooms to explore. I found the ketch the most fun out of all the great activities. There is also so much information, like there was no toilet so they had do their business off the edge!

So go to the museum NOW or you will regret it. Don’t miss out! Its open so go and have a great time!

The Maritime Museum is a great place to visit

The Maritime Museum is so cool. There are interesting things to see and fun things to do.

There is a giant life sized ship called a ketch where you can climb into cabins, spin the steering wheel or look at the rocks below.

There are tiny model ships as well which have all the details.

We also went on a boat ride. The boat was called Archie Badenoch which was made in the world war and then used as a police boat! We saw sea creatures like dolphins and jelly fish. We also learnt that there was a sugar factory, and all the sugar turned to toffee and flowed into the river.

We went back and looked at all the awesome things like dolphin brains and219 year old cannons. You can also play games like a clown game where you throw balls into a clown’s mouth. To finish off the visit you can get a souvenir from the gift shop.

If you have enjoyed reading this, go this instant!

The SA Maritime Museum is an amazing place to visit

Firstly you can go on the brilliant ketch which is a type of ship. It has awesome features like you can see where they used to cook and how they had no toilet and they had to sit on the edge. You could go in the under deck parts of the ship and it is really cool. You get to see that the steering wheel was at the back and you had to look a long distance.

Secondly you can go on a boat trip and relax looking out the window and seeing millions of jelly fish and lots of fish. If you were lucky you could maybe see a dolphin on the trip. You can take a step out of the boat and see more clearly all the wonderful animals. The boat trip is on the Port River. You can take some steps up to the roof and see a perfect view from there.

Lastly you can look at all of the old interesting items in the museum. There is so many fascinating things in there. If you're feeling bored you can have some fun playing the clown game for a fantastic break. You can look all around and see all the different things that were very old. How interesting!

This is why I know you should definitely go to the Maritime Museum. It is an amazing place to visit and everyone is welcome, so go there now if you have not already!

The Maritime Museum is a great place to visit

Reason 1: The museum is an interesting place to visit.

The Maritime Museum has lots of interesting facts and artefacts to read like William Light carved the date into a stone or if you want some more snazzy features like a 219-year-old shotgun/musket. The museum has really old and interesting facts about convicts and more on England, GO TO THE MARITIME MUESUM NOW!

Reason 2: You can also go on a boat trip on the Port Adelaide River and it is great fun to go on!

You can also see some dolphins in the water with their calves (baby dolphins). If the dolphins go under the boat the mother dolphin is trying teach the calf that boats are safe to go under. You can get a good view on the boat and its beautiful. You can open the window to look out and get good pictures. GO GOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Reason 3: The ketch is an interesting ship (the ketch is a small cargo ship).

The cargo hold is very cool and fun to slide on. They put cargo down there and supplies to carry onboard. The ship pretty big for an old cargo ship. There other cool parts of the ship to explore also.

Conclusion: You have to visit there so go and get a ticket now!

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Premier’s Reading Challenge this year. This has been another successful year with 256 students taking part. Our Reception students and first time participants received a certificate and other students are working their way up through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Champion, Legend and Hall of Fame medals. Certificates and medals were given out last week.

Well done to everyone.

The Henley Beach Giving Tree - St Vincent de Paul charity

This year we are proudly supporting St Vinnies by collecting a gift for children who would otherwise not have a present to unwrap on Christmas day. We are also collecting tins, jars, supermarket vouchers or gift cards to put towards a Christmas hamper. These collections will be donated to St Vincent de Paul for less fortunate families this Christmas.

Please do not wrap the gift, just put a tag on the item to identify gender and age.

Tags can be found on the tree in the front office from Monday 14 November and the gift is to be placed in the box next to the tree.

Hamper items can also be placed in the box in the front office.

Collection closes Tuesday 6 December.

Senior Jumpers for 2023

New CANTEEN Co-Managers- Nicole Seekamp & Mel Longmire

It’s been a crazy first week for Mel and I, we have been cooking up a storm! Earlier in the term Mr Kitchin's class arranged a class canteen survey. After reading through them all we have taken their feedback and implemented some of the things asked for. Although we won't be having hot chips and donuts, we are making different flavoured muffins, and playing music on a Friday.

For swimming week it's business as usual. We have adjusted the eating times for the classes that are affected. There will be smoothies all week over the counter and extra snacks for hungry swimmers.

For concert night Canteen will have delicious pulled pork and coleslaw rolls, baked potatoes, sausages, and a variety of snacks and drinks over the counter. Eftpos will be available.

We are still looking for donations of forks so please drop off any you can spare to the front office.

From your canteen team.
