2021 College Captains

During the final Year 12 Assembly earlier this week, our current College Captains announced and presented badges to our newly elected 2021 school leaders. Congratulations to our new College Captains, Dia Hutchinson and Brock Stephens, and Vice Captains Ruby James and Jasper Croot on their appointments. Thank you also to the other students who were nominated for these positions: Maddie Millington, Ryan Cole and James Loveday. Each of these students made an excellent account of themselves during the whole election process. They will all benefit tremendously from this valuable experience. Our school will once again be well placed under the leadership of this fine group of students.

This is the first time our College Captains have been announced prior to the traditional Presentation Night at the end of the school year.  Due to COVID-19, we have been forced to consider alternative ways of acknowledging and celebrating student achievements and milestones like this.  Plans are in place to conduct a number of individual class awards presentation ceremonies so that students can still be rewarded for their considerable efforts throughout this year.  At this time, unfortunately, guidelines currently do not allow for parents to attend any of these presentations on-site.  Further details about our end of year procedures will be conveyed to families through the newsletter in coming weeks.

Parent Opinion Surveys

A reminder was sent home last week to all parents regarding the annual Parent Opinion Survey that is conducted in all schools by the Department of Education.  Parent feedback is extremely important to Nhill College - especially this year following our experiences of remote learning.

All families have been invited to complete the survey this year - although it is only open to one parent from each family.  To complete the survey, please click on the link below and enter the following details where prompted:

https://www.orima.com.au/parent

School Name: Nhill College

Campus Name: Nhill College

Please refer to the message sent home last week via Compass to access the School PIN needed to enter the survey.

The survey is conducted anonymously and all responses are completely confidential.  The survey will close on Friday 13 November 2020.  Please contact the office if you would like assistance accessing or completing the survey online.

Farewell Year 12…

This week we have celebrated with our Year 12 students as they completed their classes at Nhill College.

As is the case with everything about 2020, the way we have been able to celebrate this significant part of the Year 12 journey has been different – but definitely a great time was still had by all! Last week the students attended classes dressed up in a couple of themes – pick your colour and the popular oldies day, as well as modifying the uniform with socks and sandals and a crazy hair/make-up day.

Monday was then the last day of official classes and students and teachers enjoyed a busy day of activities. Students started the day with a parade through the school dressed in their amazing costumes – quite a variety from Elmo and Big Bird through to Sharon from Kath & Kim.  It was then time to get busy in the Year 12 Last Great Race completing challenges and activities around the school grounds in teams. We thank Mrs. Kerber and her F/1 class for allowing the Year 12’s to visit and sing to them a favourite nursery rhyme, Nico for making an appearance in the forest where students got a selfie with our beloved mascot, Miss Foulds and the Year 7 class for joining in on the dance moves and to all teachers and students for putting up with a little bit of distraction.

Students and staff then enjoyed a delicious morning tea outside on the lawn. Thanks to Mrs. Trenery for putting the food together, Bron for providing the healthy fruit sticks and our other treats were catered for by local business Amber’s Sweet Bliss. Mr. Zimmermann thanked the students for their involvement in the school and reminded them of the need to still keep working hard in readiness for exams and in exploring work opportunities. Lucy Marshman responded on behalf of the students in thanking staff for their support.

The much anticipated Year 12 assembly was a virtual event this year, but perfectly timed to be able to take full advantage of our newly installed Smart TV’s. Year 12 Form Captains Kiara and Lucy M took us for a trip down memory lane with some “highlights” from each year they have spent at Nhill College as a group. Following this we were then amazed with the movie making skills and “acting” talents of the Year 12 students. Ebony had done a terrific job of putting together the Year 12 PowerPoint and movie. This is always a much anticipated part of the Year 12 celebrations and this year’s effort did not disappoint despite the challenges students had faced in not being able to see one another for much of the year!

Year 12’s then lined the bus loop and front gate to wave farewell to students at the end of the day. But this was not the end for the Year 12’s. They enjoyed some fun and games after school, tucked into a hearty BBQ tea (thanks Dylan), watched some old videos and shared stories and laughs. A great finish to the day!

After this busy day, students should be back into work mode with work to complete, job applications and exam preparations to finalise. All Year 12 students have been provided with information to assist in these preparations. While official classes may have ceased, Year 12 students have our full support. Subject teachers are available for further study/exam assistance, and we also have well-being and pathways advisors here for ongoing support before, during and after exams and the release of results and course offers. Students may choose to use school facilities for study spaces and are certainly welcome to “pop in” to school if they wish. Students should ensure they sign in and out at the front office when they are on the school grounds.

Students and families should not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. We are all here to help.

So, for now, work hard Year 12. We look forward to being able to finalise plans for an end of year function soon.

2020-2021 BYOD News: Edunet Specifications Sheet for Parents

The sudden shift to remote learning has led to significant changes to our traditional methods of providing students who don't have BYODs with access to school laptops.  These current arrangements look like they will stay in place for the remainder of this year, which is fantastic for all those families who are making use of a school laptop to support their child's remote learning program.

The benefits of having each child allocated their own device were quite obvious during the brief return to on-site learning late last term.  We are now committed to ensuring that that this provision will be available again in 2021.  However, there will be one major change to the borrowing arrangements next year.  Those students who do not have a BYOD, will not be permitted to take their school allocated laptop home with them each night and will be required to return them to the charging station in the library at the end of the day.  This will help us to avoid any damage in transit between school and home, as well as acting as an incentive for families to consider a BYOD that can be used at home as well as at school.

To assist those families interested in exploring BYOD options, we have new and updated models for our BYOD program through Edunet.  Please open the attachment below for details about the devices.  Mr Shrive is happy to take questions from parents or students if they are looking at purchasing a BYOD.

The online ordering portal is accessible via http://nhillcollege.technologyportal.com.au  The Access Code you will need to access the portal is NC2021

A video explaining the benefits of using Edunet can also be found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bWjEs_iA58

    Primary Assembly and Awards

    Reading Awards

Students in Mrs Kerber’s Foundation and Year One class have continued to be busy learning their Magic Coloured Words and Fry Words. The various coloured words come from the most used word lists, which make up around 50% of words read in any given text. The Fry words are the next more common words learnt after the coloured words have been achieved. Congratulations to Lucas, Indi and Charlotte for their great progress in reading.   (pictured below)

    Musical Item

During the Primary Virtual Assembly, Lucy and Miss Bates played a duet together on the clarinet called 'Duetto No.1." by Johann Gabrielsky. Well done Lucy.

    Primary Sports Fun Afternoon

    Year 6 Public Speaking Awards

On Thursday 5th of November, the Year 6 students presented their speeches to the class.  Students had spent the previous two weeks working on their speeches.  They researched their topic and had to persuade the audience for or against.  Students then typed their speeches out onto palm cards and delivered their speech to the Year 6 Class.  Speeches were between 2 – 3 minutes long. Students also filled out a peer feedback proforma.  The criteria for the speeches consisted of Voice, Posture, Facial Expressions, Dictation, Eye Contact, Hook, Information and Conclusion summary.

Teacher Award winners were – Charlotte with the topic of  ‘Why most animals should be kept in Zoos’.    Corey  with the topic of ‘Why smoking should be banned.’

Peer Award winner was Messi, with the topic of ‘Why you should put rubbish in the bin’.

Congratulations to all of the students for their amazing efforts.

    Welcome to Facebook

Staying connected to our students, parents and wider school community has never been more important than it is now due to remote learning and the wider constraints of Stage 3 Restrictions.  Nhill College has used Compass, our web page and the weekly newsletter to keep families associated with the school up to date with all of the events and activities that occur in and around the school each week.  To help broaden exposure to the school at this time, we recently launched a trial of our own Facebook page.  This page will be purely for promotion, publicity and to inform everyone of the upcoming events and happenings within the College.  All notes, questions, concerns or communication to staff regarding students still need to be directed to the College via Compass or on (03) 5391 2111.  To find our Facebook page, simply follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/nhillcollege/ or type Nhill College in the search function on Facebook. (Please be aware there is also an unofficial Nhill College facebook page that does not show the Nhill College logo).

Please like/follow the page and then you will be kept up-to-date with all of our posts.  We appreciate your patience at this time as we trial a new method of communication.

    Access to Nhill College Newsletter

If you are reading this, you obviously have access to the school newsletter.  However, some families have asked how grandparents or community members can stay in touch with the school when they don't have access to Compass.  The answer is that anyone can access the school's newsletter through the College website: www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au.  Please advise any family, friends or interested members of the wider community, that the newsletter is the main source of information from the school and that it is available to anyone who would like to read it.  Spread the word!

    2020 NHILL COLLEGE MAGAZINE ORDERS

Have you ordered your copy of this year’s Nhill College Magazine yet?  Despite the fact that Covid has wreaked havoc with many of our school events this year, the Magazine will be packed with memories and events that have made 2020 so unique!  It has been a challenge to put together this year’s edition, but with the contribution of so many families providing photos of Remote Learning, and students producing wonderful work at home, we have been able to put together a wonderful momento of the school year of 2020.

Despite us thinking we may not wish to remember this year, it will be a very important piece of our history.

If you have not already ordered your 2020 edition, you still can by contacting the Office and arranging payment of $20 per copy.  Pre-orders are due in by 1st November.
