***Changes to Self-Isolation Requirements***

The NSW Health Minister made the Public Health (COVID-19 Self-Isolation) Order 2022, which commenced at 5pm Wednesday 2 March 2022. The Order revokes and remakes the current Public Health (COVID-19 Self-Isolation) Order (No 4) 2021, with the following amendments:

  • A household contact will only need to self-isolate for 7 days commencing from when the diagnosed person took the test, rather than 7 days from last contact with the diagnosed person,
  • A household contact is not obligated to self-isolate as a contact more than once in a 21 day period (if the person is diagnosed with COVID-19, they will need to self-isolate again),
  • A person who had COVID-19 and later becomes a close contact or household contact does not need to self-isolate as a contact if it has been less than 8 weeks since the person finished their self-isolation period (up from 28 days in the current Order),
  • A medical clearance notice (which exempts diagnosed cases from any vaccination order for 6 weeks) will be able to be issued by or on behalf of NSW Health (in addition to a medical practitioner or nurse),
  • Updating the provisions relating to medical clearance to align with recent amendments to the Public Health (COVID-19 Care Services) Order (No 3) so that a medical clearance certificate operates as a 6 week exemption to the booster requirement as well as the requirement to have 2 doses of the vaccine.

A little ray of sunshine during these stormy times...

We are so well-aware of the current stormy times, both here and world-wide, in addition to 2 seemingly unrelenting years of COVID-19, turning our lives upside-down. As adults, it can be difficult enough for us to navigate our way through visual media saturation of these traumatic events, let alone for our children.

At the moment, is is important to filter our children from the full extent of some of these events. Media coverage can have an impact on children in the following ways:

  • they can be led to think this event is happening constantly, rather than one event being replayed
  • they can feel that they are unsafe and that something bad may happen to them or their family
  • they can spend a great deal of time thinking about the event, which can affect their sleep and time at school
  • they may be anxious that the same sort of event may happen to them or their family.

The more media coverage children see, the more likely they are to become afraid or upset. https://emergingminds.com.au/

Strength lies in standing together as a community,

just like the sunflowers grow together in a field.

On Monday 7 March, every student will be bringing home a little packet of sunflower seeds, in the hope that planting them provides a grounded, down to earth, experience. The seeds will need to be watered and nurtured to help them grow. It is the wrong time of year for sunflowers but, like those who are facing great adversity at present, with love, care, and attention, they may see their way to becoming strong sunflowers that are able to turn their 'faces' to the sun.

Maria Lambos - Principal

Sunflowers...did you know?

5 interesting facts about sunflowers...

  1. These flowers are unique in that they have the ability to provide energy in the form of nourishment and vibrancy—attributes which mirror the sun and the energy provided by its heat and light. Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone's (or your) day
  2. The sunflower (Helianthus), called “sunyashnikiis” in Ukrainian, is the national flower of Ukraine. The bright yellow blooms are an integral part of its culture, heritage, and even its economy. Sunflowers were first imported from North America to Ukraine in the 1800s
  3.  They track the sun - Sunflowers display a behaviour called heliotropism. The flower buds and young blossoms will face east in the morning and follow the sun as the earth moves during the day. However, as the flowers get heavier during seed production, the stems will stiffen and the mature flower heads will generally remain facing east
  4. Sunflowers have a history of healing - In Mexico, the flowers were thought to sooth chest pain. A number of Native American tribes agreed with the plant's curing properties. The Cherokee utilised an infusion of sunflower leaves to treat kidneys while the Dakota brought it out to sooth chest pain and pulmonary troubles
  5. They are actually thousands of tiny flowers - each sunflower's head is made of smaller flowers. The petals we see around the outside are called ray florets, and they cannot reproduce. But the disc florets in the middle, where the seeds develop, have both male and female sex organs, and each produce a seed. They can self-pollinate or take pollen blown by the wind or transported by insects.

Zone Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 3 March we had several students from Balmain brave the wild and woolly weather at the Zone Swimming Carnival. All the students performed exceptionally well and demonstrated the Balmain Way, with their positive attitudes and the encouragement of their teammates. Well done to all students involved; your efforts and behaviour was excellent on the day! I wish to pass my thanks on to our two parent volunteers for their assistance in running the day. Good luck to those swimmers who qualified for the Sydney East Swimming Carnival on Monday 14 March! ~ Mr Carlton

P&C...

THANK YOU!!!!!

I would like to acknowledge and thank the entire 2021 P&C executive for the ongoing support of our students and school during 2 years of COVID-affected times. It’s been a great mix of newer members of the P&C, as well as more experienced ones. I would like to make special mention to both Cliff (Vice President) and Victoria (Secretary), whose ‘babies’ are now in Year 7 and are understandably moving on. Cliff has been heavily involved with the P&C, in one role or another, since I first began in 2014. Victoria has also been involved for a number of years. Both have been instrumental in some of the fabulous initiatives that have been introduced to BPS along the way. For all your hard work and dedication, on behalf of the school, I thank you. Huge thanks to Shehana, our first female P&C President, for the past 2 years of ‘steering the P&C ship’, who isn’t leaving us, however stepping down due to other commitments. Many thanks also go to our Treasurer, Paul, as well as to Gemma, our Vice President. What a team! Thanks to each and every one of you for your time and dedication.

CONGRATS & WELCOME!!!!

Congratulations and welcome to our new P&C Executive: President - Lauren (Ava - Year 1); Vice Presidents - Gemma (George in Year 1 & Joshua in Year 4) & Nathalia (Scarlett in Kindy); Treasurer - Paul (Samuel in Kindy & Jasper in Year 2) & Secretary - Renate (Jack in Year 2 & Lachlan in Year 4). Thank you to each and every one of you for volunteering your time, to work in partnership with Balmain Public School, supporting all our wonderful students and fabulous school, as well as representing our community! It takes a village to raise a child and we couldn’t do it without our dedicated and supportive community! We look forward to working together with you this year!

A message from your outgoing President...

as per separate SkoolBag notification & email...

Dear parents and carers,

We held our P&C AGM and March meeting last night – it was my last as President of the Committee. One of the things that we are supposed to do at every AGM is reflect on the last year as part of a President’s report. Here’s a summary of mine.

I can safely say that my time as President has been nothing like I imagined it would be!

I first got involved because I wanted to help the school become a more sustainable place and with the help of 10 other parents we developed the Committee’s first Climate and Sustainability Action Plan.

My plan, when I then became President in 2020, was to put that plan to action and to develop a long-term overall strategy for the Committee but then a pandemic started!

I am so proud of what the Committee has been able to do and achieve despite the roller-coaster ride that we’ve all been on.

We managed to hold some very successful and fun events in between lockdowns – the Virtual Trivia Night, the welcome drinks and the Salvation Army Giving Ceremonies.

We also delivered some big projects for the school including:

  • Getting new solar panels installed;
  • Upgrading the outdoor toilets; and
  • Installing air filters in all learning areas in the school.

I am particularly proud of the fact that since being elected, we dramatically increased the transparency of this Committee and decisions made with regular updates sent out at least once a month, it’s something I’ve encouraged the new Committee to try and do as well.

Even before the pandemic hit and lockdowns became a thing, we tried to introduce video conferencing as an option for P&C meetings. We found out that there was an old-fashioned rule that didn’t allow P&C votes to be tabled online and so during the pandemic we worked hard behind the scenes (with others) to lobby for that rule to be changed. We also lobbied for the rules in schools to be brought more in line with the rest of the community and it was fantastic to be allowed back into the school after nearly a year away but sadly the pandemic struck again.

As things ease up and we all get used to living with Covid, I’ve urged the new Committee to remain vigilant about the restrictions set for school as opposed to the general community. It really doesn’t make sense that you can go to a concert, a restaurant, the cinema, a play centre but you can’t walk into the grounds of your child’s school.

We should never forget how important it is for our children to see us involved and part of their school life. There is a mountain of research that shows that the more a parent is involved in their child’s education, the more the child benefits.

Our children have missed all that over the last two years. There are memories my older sons have of their early years at primary school that my son in year two will never have. Hearing his parents clapping and cheering at assemblies and carnivals; having a parent come in to help with reading or the special thrill when mum or dad is in the canteen for that day, having a parent there for excursions or watching him perform in a play or playing music.

It's really sad and I hope we can go back to how things should be.

I want to say a huge thank you to the rest of the Committee – Alvin, who was our treasurer in 2020, Paul, Victoria, Cliff and Gemma. It’s been a delight to work with you all. Thank you for your work, your humour and your genuine enthusiasm for helping make Balmain Public School the best place we can imagine for our children.

I also want to thank Maria and all the teachers at Balmain for your care, dedication and support of our children, especially these last couple of years.

Finally, I want to thank all our incredible parent volunteers who do so much to help the school every year – our school’s success is entirely dependent on your involvement, and we are so lucky to have such community minded and generous parents and carers at Balmain.

Shehana Darda-Teixeira

P&C President 2021
