Principal`s Report

Welcome back to term 2, which is primarily the busiest term of the year with many academic, creative arts, sports, and cultural activities on throughout the term.

The National Assessment’s for years 3 and 5 begin next week with preparations well underway.

Our annual Athletics Carnival is also on in week 7- just after the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

The term includes one of our main community events which is the Mother’s Day Breakfast held this Friday morning in the school. This is a wonderful school and community event and we invite all mums and carers to share in the morning.

ANZAC DAY

Thank you to Mrs Pass, Mrs Fiene, parents and our children for attending the ANZAC day march here in Wyong. They met in the town centre to participate in the march on ANZAC Day along with other schools and groups. We thank them for supporting our school and giving up their morning on this important day in our Australian history. We also thank all parents for attending to support the service.

ANZAC Day is a national day of commemoration in both Australia and New Zealand when we remember those who fought and those who died in the war. So great were the losses at Gallipoli and later on the Western Front (Europe) during World War 1, they impacted heavily on our relatively small populations. The ANZAC landings were the first occasion where soldiers of these two countries fought together. Mutual respect developed between the ANZAC’s and Turkish soldiers at Gallipoli.

We thank all servicemen and women for the service they have provided and continue to provide to our country.

Parent Teacher Interviews

As previously mentioned Parent / Teacher interviews are being held this week and again in 2 weeks’ time. Please ensure you make time to come in and talk with your child’s teacher about any aspect of their education and welfare. Quite often teachers mention to me that they do not always get the opportunity to see the parents they wish to see, so please make an appointment to come in or make a time to see your child’s teacher at another time if need be.

Climbing Equipment

We are pleased to announce that the new climbing equipment is here and almost ready to be used. The soft fall grounding has been added and the equipment will be ready for use this week. The area itself will benefit with more children being able to use the area, which is very popular with the children across the school.

We may be able to plan to update further climbing equipment in a year or so once the funds have been planned for.

New Painting – Kindergarten to year 4 classrooms

As previously mentioned the school is being re-painted across the Kindergarten to year 4 classrooms. The contractors began in the school holidays and have already completed year 3 and 4 classrooms, and are continuing with the year 1 and 2 classrooms.

Planning has allowed these classes to use other rooms as needed. The areas being painted include classrooms (walls, doors, cornices etc.) along with wet areas, as well as the ramps in these areas too. The contractors have been working in the evenings to reduce disruptions to classrooms. The kindergarten rooms and year 1 rooms (Mrs Bishop and Miss Davies) will be painted later during the term.

High School Transition

Dear Parents/Carers,

Expression of Interest for high school enrolment forms were sent home with every Year 6 student in March 2019. If you have not returned your high school enrolment form please do so urgently.

All students regardless of whether they are applying for a selective high school or not are required to have an Expression of Interest completed by their parents/carers. Please complete the form that we previously sent to you and return it to Wyong Public School by Friday 10th May 2019.   If you are unable to locate your EOI form please click on the link below to download another form.

Your prompt return of the Expression of Interest forms will be genuinely appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Vicki Arnot Assistant Principal Stage 3

Opportunity Class 2020 Information

Each year at this time parents of Year 4 students are given the opportunity to apply for their child to attend an Opportunity Class program for academically gifted and talented students during Year 5 and Year 6.

   What are opportunity classes?

Opportunity classes located in 75 NSW government primary schools cater for Year 5 and Year 6 academically gifted and talented students. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students and using specialised teaching methods and educational materials at the appropriate level.

Parents apply when students are in Year 4. Successful students are then offered a place by the NSW Department of Education High Performance Unit  and attend the opportunity class full time for two years in Years 5 and 6 at the primary school with an opportunity class. It is a two-year placement program. In the majority of cases, students who accept a place in an opportunity class will leave their current school to attend the school with an opportunity class. There is no provision to apply for Year 6 placement only.

Some key facts about Opportunity class placement procedures

-          Wyong PS has two Opportunity Classes, a Year 5 group and a Year 6 group.

-          Enrolments are decided by the NSW Department of Education, High Performance Unit. Wyong PS does not decide who gets to come to the classes here.

-          The Opportunity Class Test will be held at regional centres, not at Wyong PS.

-          Late applications do not get considered except in the most extreme of circumstances.

-          The home current school of each applicant is asked to provide a ranking score in English and Maths.

-          You may apply at any two of the schools with Opportunity Classes.

-          The home school of each student applying is asked to provide an assessment score for both English and Maths.

Cross Country

Well done and congratulations to all students who participated in the school cross country in Week 11 last term. We were incredibly lucky to have had such a beautiful sunny day and a dry course. Zone Cross Country will be held on Thursday the 23rd of May in Week 4. Those students who have qualified for Zone will be given a note this week. Thank to to all of the students and teachers who assisted in the organisation of the day, preparing the course and supervision. Thank you to all of of the parents, families and friends that came to watch and cheer on the students.

P&C News

The P&C have held the Mother's Day stall over the last couple of days and it has been a great success with many students having fun shopping for their very deserving Mums and carers. Thank you to our parent volunteers for helping sell and wrap gifts. We wish a Happy Mother's Day to all WPS families.

Earn & Learn

WPS are once again participating in the Woolworths Earn and Learn program which runs from May 1st - June 25th. Please save your stickers to help earn equipment for our students. Your stickers can be placed in the collection brochures which are available at the front office. We have a collection box at the front office and also at the Woolworths store at Wadalba. Happy saving!

Canteen News

The Snack Shack Canteen ladies would like to welcome our families back for Term 2. We have some tasty new menu items for the students to enjoy and unfortunately a few small price increases to pass on. Please see the schools website for our new full updated menu. Also a reminder for families that they can use the only ordering service Flexischools to order lunches, even for the same day up till 9.30am!

New Sign-in Process

A new sign-in process is being trialled at the school to improve the safety of our students and staff and ensure that all Department of Education policies and procedures are followed.

All visitors to the school needing to come on site are required to sign-in at the office.

Anyone needing to come on site please bring PHOTO ID with you the next time you visit to register your details (even if the school has previously cited it). All future sign-ins will then be simplified.
