Reflection

Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O most Sacred Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore you, I love you, and with sorrow for my sins and misdeeds I offer you this heart of mine.

Make me humble, patient, pure and obedient to your will. Grant, Lord Jesus, that I may live as you did. Protect me in the midst of danger. Comfort me in my afflictions. Give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, and your blessing on all that I do. Amen.

From the Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we fast approach the end of Term Two l would like to thank and acknowledge the work of all members of the school community this Term. It has been a shorter than usual term of just nine weeks but we have certainly fulfilled many extra curricular activities into the Term.

This is all made possible because of the hard work and dedication of our incredible staff and with the support of the parent community.  This all enriches the learning and growth of our students which will be celebrated in their Semester 1 reports.

I thank your child for all they have achieved and all they have contributed – they should be proud of their efforts, as they continue to ease back into the usual routines of school. I also thank each parent/carer and family member for your encouragement, feedback, and support of your child’s ongoing wellbeing and learning.

Last week we held a Mother’s Social event and it was wonderful to see the school community come together in fantastic numbers and enjoy a lovely evening organised by the Parents Association (PA). Thank you to all those involved in the PA in the planning, organisation and welcoming environment that was created on the night.

Building Project

If you have been in the school grounds during the past six weeks you would have noticed that there has been minimal work completed onsite during this time. Unfortunately the delay was due to a permit for Stage 1 works not being finalised. This has finally been signed off as of Friday 17th June. Therefore weather permitting there will be significant works completed this week and over the holiday period. It is anticipated that upon the students return from holidays you will see some progress in the building Project. While the last six weeks will push back the completion date a little it is not expected to be as much as expected with the Builders ordering products for Stage 2 & 3 in advance and completing as much preparation work as possible during this time.

Last Day of Term  - Casual Clothes Day

To celebrate and end the term on a bright and positive note students will be able to attend school in casual clothes for the final day of Term Friday 24th June. Students will finish at the usual time of  3.30pm.

On behalf of the school community l would like to congratulate and thank Laura for her time at St Richard’s and her dedication to the role and support and assistance in the different classrooms and at the many extra curricular activities during this time.

School Advisory Council (SAC) - Feedback to members

The School Advisory Council (SAC) meets next Wednesday 22nd June.

The SAC provides a crucial point of connection between the wider school community and school leaders. While the School Advisory Council does not have a decision-making authority, it informs, advises and supports the principal and school leadership.

Each Year level has a representative that you may contact to bring any ideas or concerns to the meetings. Please find the name and details of your Year Level representative who are more than willing to assist and listen to you. Also please know you may contact staff members who are also part of the SAC as well as your student’s classroom teacher. If you have any questions please feel free to ask us.

School Advisory Council Member Contact Details

Rapid Antigen Testing Requirements from May 23

RATs will continue to be distributed to you as they have been throughout this school year for the remainder of this term.

However, from Monday 23 May 2022, we do not recommend that your child complete a RAT twice a week as previously advised.

RATs will continue to be required by students who are household contacts to attend school (five negative tests over a seven-day period) or who have symptoms.

The ongoing supply of RATs to families in our school will ensure that parents and carers have tests should they need them if their child is a household contact or has symptoms.

Families must continue to notify the Department of Health and the school if their child returns a positive RAT result. Additionally, you should inform us if any of your children are household contacts.

Treat Friday Helpers

Treat Friday will be back for Term 3. If you would like to assist one Friday in Term 3 between 1.05pm - 1.35pm please email Vanessa  - vanjohnmil@gmail.com

All helpers require a Working with Children Check and evidence of Triple Vaccination.

School Disco

Our School Disco is organised for Friday 15th July @5.30pm in the school hall!

The Theme is Christmas in July!

The cost is $5.00 per child or $10 per family.

A note will go home this week with further details.

Deputy Principal 's News

Dear Parents and Carers,

Feast of the Sacred Heart

There are over one thousand references to the word ‘heart’ in the Bible and only a rare few intend the heart as a physical organ. For the most part ‘heart’ is used in a symbolic, metaphorical way. In most of these references heart carries the sense of the whole person, the very essence, the real or true self, the person in their innermost depths. In the Christian Scriptures Jesus is presented as a man of heart and, as his life and ministry unfold, he is presented as compassion personified. God is love and Jesus is love incarnate; his life exemplifies what it is to be on earth the heart of God. John concludes the prologue to his gospel with these words: ‘No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son who is close to the Father’s heart who has made him known.’

Next Friday the 24th June we will celebrate the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This Eucharistic celebration is sometimes referred to as a ‘Poor Man’s Mass’, and our act of giving is a physical sign of Jesus’ unconditional love for others. We are currently collecting, in each classroom non-perishable food items.  These will be donated to our local St. Vincent de Paul organisation to distribute. In these times with cost of living so high we thank all the school families that have/will contribute to this request.

Distinti Saluti! (Kind Regards)

Deputy Principal

Confirmation Family Night

The Year 6 students will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday the 29th of July at 7.30pm. This is a very important part of their faith development and journey into becoming a full adult member of the Catholic Church. As part of their preparation for this sacrament students/ families participated in a Confirmation Family Night which was held on Wednesday 15th of June.

The Confirmation Family Night provided families with information to help them understand the Sacrament and strengthen their faith.

Donations for the Feast of the Sacred Heart

To support those in our community who might go hungry because they can not afford food, we are looking for donations of non-perishable food.

The items that we would like are non-perishable foods such as pasta, tin foods or long life milk. Please donate because if you don’t there will be a lot more hungry people in our community.

All donations will be passed on to St. Vincent de Paul Mooroolbark who provide hampers of food to those who are in need.

These donations can be placed in a basket in your child’s classroom and we will pass these donations on at the Feast of the Sacred Heart Mass at the end of term.

We are hoping that every person at St. Richard’s could provide at least one item.

The more we get, the more people we can help. So please donate today.

Thank you for your support - The Year 3/4 Team

Please Donate Before Friday 24th of June

Not in Front of the Children

The things parents say in front of their children have wide-ranging effects on their learning, confidence and behaviour. Ever said something about another person in front of your children, only to hear one of the kids repeat those words in public when the subject of your comments is around? Yes, children’s blatant honesty can embarrass the hell out of their parents. We need to be mindful of what we say in front of our children. This week’s Parenting Ideas article gives us some ideas on how we can navigate this area of communication.

Parents Association Mothers Event

Last week the Parent Association organised a social event for all the mothers, grandmothers and important females in our lives. The night commenced with fun activities that included nail painting, crown making and a special green screen photo opportunity. After the social activities Mr Gill and Mr. Vail supervised students who watched a movie in the library whist the adults had an opportunity to socialise and have some tasty treats.

We would like to thank the Schools Parents Association: Chelsey Ironmonger , Debbie McKane, Gab Dosser, Salika Dong, Lauren White, Maddy Wyatt, Pam Karsai, Samnang Robbins, Louise Wandmaker and Stephanie Pugh for all their planning, hard work and commitment into making this social event a huge success.

And we would like to make a special mention to Binu Krishnan for preparing all the wonderful food for the evening.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

This year our school once again be participated in the Cancer Council's Australia's Biggest Morning Tea.  All profits that were made by Treat Friday was donated to the Cancer Council.

We would like to thank all families who supported this event. The feedback from those working in the canteen was that there were many generous students, some preferring to donate their Treat Friday money and others donating their change to the cause.

The total raised for the Cancer Council was $363.60. We would like to thank Kim Raditsis and the Treat Friday team for all their work in organising this event.

I also want to say a big thank you to all the Year 4 students who stepped in to help out when we needed more players, they all played fantastically well and helped us achieve great results this term!

Overall our results were:

Netball: 5 Win 1 Loss

Soccer: 4 Win 2 Tie

Congratulations to the Hot Shots Tennis team for a spectacular season, you all showed excellent team spirit and were gracious winners. I am very excited to see if we make the Winter Interschool Sports Finals of the Soccer and Netball (mixed) games next term, fingers crossed!

Division Cross Country

Congratulations to all the students who competed in the Division Cross Country race last Tuesday the 7th of June, you all put in so much effort to get there and I am proud of all of your achievements. The Division Cross Country event was held for the students who managed to place top 10 in their race in the District Cross Country.

6 Students attended across 3 different races; Sam Schulz and Logan Ellis in the 12/13 Boys, Cooper Sully in the 11 Boys, and Indiana Martens, Alicia Arndt and Evie Bowman in the 11 Girls. It was a hard track, running 3KM across hills and muddy ground, versing the best students from schools all across the Maroondah division, but all of our students managed to finish their races and come home with big smiles on their faces. Well done everyone!

Hoop Time

Well done to the Year 3 and 4 Students on a fantastic day of Basketball at our Hoop Time event on Friday 10th of June. It was such a fun day playing against the other schools of Mooroolbark East Primary School and Wonga Park Primary School, and it was great to see everyone in such high spirits for all their games.

We had 5 teams compete on the day, two Rookies teams, two Future Stars teams and an All Stars-Boys team. Each team played 4-5 games of around 20 minutes at different intervals during the day, and it was great to see the students supporting our school when they weren't playing!

Congratulations to the Rookies Rockets for their win, they all played fantastically even if some of the students had never played a game of basketball before.

And another Congratulations to the Future Stars Rangers for playing in one of the finals, it was such a close game with only 2 points off winning!

I want to say a big thank you to all the parents who came to help out on the day, as well as the parents who helped transport students to and from the stadium. The day couldn't have run as smoothly as it did without your support so thank you all!

I can’t wait until the Year 5 and 6 students get their turn to play in September, I hope they are all practising hard until then!
