Principal's Report

Welcome Back

A special welcome to our new librarian Mrs Christine Hong who has come to Harbord after being the librarian at Killarney Heights Public School for the last 7 years. We are very lucky to have such an experienced and passionate librarian joining our team at Harbord.

ANZAC DAY Assembly

Last Wednesday our Captains Charlie, Emily, Fionn and Owen led the school's K – 2 and 3 - 6 ANZAC Day commemorative assembly.  We were also delighted once again to welcome Mr Brian O’Rourke, former Deputy Principal of Harbord for many years, as our special guest. It was a very special, solemn and moving occasion which gave our students appreciation of the ANZAC legacy. Our SRC and class representatives laid a red gerbera on behalf of their class on the hall stage and our Captains laid a wreath. Our ANZAC assembly was greatly enhanced by performances from our school Festival Choir, conducted by Miss Dalgleish,  Charlie who played the Last Post and Amy who played The Reveille. Thanks to Ms Norwood, Tommy and Geordie who coordinated all the music and slides with the assistance of Mrs Naylor.

Harbord Diggers ANZAC Service

Thank you to Mr Kieran Sly for representing me at the ANZAC service at Harbord Diggers on Sunday. Our Captains Charlie, Emily and Fionn, read a beautiful piece of writing each and laid a wreath on behalf of our staff, students and parent community. We are so proud of the way they respectfully spoke and presented themselves. Lest we Forget

Community Service – Thank you

Joey Scouts from 1st/2nd Harbord, Cromer/Dee Why and Brookvale/Curl Curl have cleaned the war memorial in Jacka Park, Freshwater before laying hand made poppies. The Joey Scouts (aged 5, 6 & 7) meet every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon and regularly clean up our community.

During the holidays four of our students, Milla & Grace F and Tudor and Mattie M, set up a craft and cake stall at Curl Curl netball courts. They decided they wanted to raise money for the charity Sanfilippo. They did so well, raising $182.00. The community, especially the school community, were very supportive. Last week they went to the Sanfilippo offices and handed the money over themselves.

This is their second stall. Last year they raised $100.00 for Bear Cottage with handmade crafts made by themselves.

Roof Replacement

We found out in the school holidays that our roofs were being replaced in the first few weeks of this term. Thanks KH, KI, KW & KL for being so accommodating whilst your roof was being replaced. The roof is also being replaced in Q block this week to bring it back to its heritage state. Our Year 5 classes on the top floor (5H and 5D) will have a little holiday in other rooms for a few days and hopefully we will be back to normal soon. Thank you for your understanding.

Semester One Banner Assemblies

When students collect 5 Goldies, they receive a Banner.  These Banners are presented at a special Banner assembly at the end of Semester One or Semester Two.

Students can bring their 5 Goldies to register their names for a Banner.

Parents will be sent an invitation to attend this special assembly.

The Banner Assemblies for Semester One will be held on:

        Wednesday 23 June at 1:45pm for K-2

Wednesday 14 July at 1:45pm for Year 3-6

To register for a banner, students must present their 5 goldies to the deputy office (Mrs Miller for K-2 and Mrs Yates for 3-6) before the event.

The cut off for the Semester One banner assembly is:

        Wednesday 9 June for K-2

        Wednesday 16 June for 3-6

If students miss this date, they can be included in the Semester Two Banner assembly.

NAPLAN Online 2021

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

Our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online between 11 and 21 May 2021.

Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in the NAPLAN Online tests.

For further information on NAPLAN please contact your child's teacher or refer to the following flyers for parents and students.

Check-in Assessment for Years 4

Year 4 students will participate in a reading and numeracy check-in assessment.

The check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online reading and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor Year 4 student learning following the period of learning from home.

The check-in assessments can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs.

· The assessment is scheduled for our Year 4 students this week.

Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment that they would normally receive in the classroom.

Cross Country Carnival

Good luck to all our students participating in the Cross-Country carnival on Wednesday.  I look forward to hearing about all your personal bests.

SRC Induction Assembly

On Wednesday 5 May, we look forward to inducting our 2021 Student Representative Council class members.  Parents would have received a personal invitation to attend this event.  While COVID restrictions have eased, due to the number of students attending this assembly and the size of our hall, we have limited parent attendance to only one parent per student.

PSSA Trials

PSSA trials for our winter season have commenced.  Coaches have been inundated with students wishing to trial for these teams.  It is wonderful to see so many students keen to represent our school.  However, there are only a limited number of places and unfortunately many students do not get selected.  We appreciate parents helping to share this message with their child/ren.  A big thank you to the teachers who take these teams.  This is a commitment that takes up a lot of your time and we appreciate you providing this opportunity for our students.

Applying for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2022

Applications for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2022 open on Tuesday 20 April and close Friday 7 May 2021.

Parents apply online at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 .

All applicants are required to sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test to be held on Wednesday 21 July 2021.

The Department has introduced a new application system that will give parents a more interactive experience. The new system enables parents to make updates and add attachments even after an application is submitted. Parents can also communicate directly with the Team through the system’s new ‘messages’ feature.

Anyone experiencing difficulty completing or submitting an application, can contact the Team on 1300 880 367 or email ssu@det.nsw.edu.au

Deputy Principal's Report

Welcome back to Term 2, I hope everyone had a restful holiday. Most students have settled back into routines of school which is great. Over the last two days, Year 2 have attended an excursion to the Coastal Environmental Education Centre. Teachers from the group that attended on Monday reported that the students had an excellent time. We will publish some photos and some writing about the excursion in the Week 4 newsletter.

Parent Helpers in Kindergarten

This week we have welcomed parent helpers into our Kindergarten classes. We are very excited to be able to have them here to help support the learning of our students. Today I visited KY and the parent helpers were helping with sequencing the events that happened in the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk. Students also worked with a parent helper to plant a seed in front of a castle that they coloured in. They will watch the seed sprout and grow into their very own beanstalk.

Thank you to the wonderful parents who do volunteer their time. It certainly makes a huge difference in our classrooms.

Up and Coming Writer!

Today Julian from Kindergarten came and shared a story he had written which was then published into a book. The story was called Helicopter is the Best. The story was about a dog that fell off a balcony and broke a bone. Dog Pilot came in his helicopter and rescued the dog and took him to hospital to get a cast.

Julian wrote the whole story and did all the illustrations. This is such an amazing achievement for a student who is in Kindergarten.

Australian Early Development Census

Our school will be participating in the Australian Early Development Census this term. The census gathers information on the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of fulltime school. If you are a parent of a Kindergarten student who does not wish for information to be gathered please speak with your child’s teacher.

Walk Safely to School Day - Friday, 14th May 2021

Active Kids are Smarter Kids

Wear you 'Crazy' Socks!

National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is on Friday 14th May, 2021. Now in its 22nd year, it is a campaign and annual event when all primary school children, their parents and carers are encouraged to walk and commute regularly and safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment.

Australian children are becoming less active. One substantial contributor is the decline in walking and/or taking public transport to school. Children who are regularly physically active are healthier, perform better academically and are less likely to be obese or overweight, which can lead to the long-term and costly risks of heart disease and diabetes etc.. Walking regularly is the best exercise because you can build it into your daily routine.

The Objectives of National Walk Safely to School Day are:

•  To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children.

•  To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits.

•  To help children develop vital road crossing skills and ensure children up to the age of 10 years, hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.

•  To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.

•  To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion.

•  To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.

•  To promote the use of public transport.

SOOO…...GET INVOLVED AND WEAR YOUR CRAZIEST SOCKS AS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WALK TO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, 14th MAY 2021 !!

Library News

Premier's Reading challenge

A reminder to all students to continue logging books in the Student Reading Record via the online PRC site   https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Commencing this week students in years 3-6 will be given access to tablets to log books during the borrowing session of their timetabled library class. This will become part of their regular library class as students are encouraged to read widely and record their books.

Happy Reading!

Book Club

Issue #3 arrived this week and will be distributed by classroom teachers. The catalogue is also available online https://scholastic.com.au/book-club/book-club-parents/ , scroll to the bottom of the page to find the ‘Look Inside’ link. Orders for this issue will be closing on Friday April 7th.

The library is most appreciative of the community support in purchasing books via book club as the reward points are used to purchased additional resources for the library for all students to enjoy.

Library Matters

We have had a busy first week in the library with all students enjoying books about ANZAC day. Year 6 created an ANZAC word wall and a memorial to our ‘Forgotten Soldiers’, the indigenous men and women of Australia who have served in WWI and WWII.

After a very busy first week year 2 enjoyed some quiet time reading for enjoyment. The hobbit holes were a most popular spot to sit with a friend and enjoy a book. It is always a pleasure to see so many students reading such a wide variety of books.

A reminder that all books borrowed before the holidays are now overdue and need to be returned to the library. Students with overdue books will be limited to borrowing one book at a time until the late books are returned. Students in years 2-6 wishing to borrow more than two books are required to bring a library to protect books and to minimise loss. If your child cannot find their school library bag alternatives are: reusable shopping bags, drawstring swimming bags, a plastic bag, even a pillowcase would be suitable.

Stewart House Envelope Drive

SRC students will be coordinating the annual Stewart House Donation Drive to raise funds for Stewart House. The focus of the program is kids helping kids. All K-6 students are asked to place a $2 coin in an envelope (supplied) and return the envelope to school. Envelopes need to be returned to school by Friday 28th May. Students are asked to do a chore at home to raise the $2.00. Funds raised will support the excellent work undertaken by Stewart House for disadvantaged students throughout the state. The envelopes will be distributed to students next week.
