FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

With the middle of Week 3 upon us, it can be said that we are in the midst of key events that set the scene for the academic year ahead. Whilst last week saw the Parent Information Night for Years 7 to 10, this week the Year 11 and the Junior School are having their introductory evenings. Numbers logging onto our zoom sessions have shown wonderful support from our families to engage with us through this medium. Delivery of key generalist information followed by presentations from Year Level Coordinators and introduction to Form and Class Teachers allowed wide coverage of both the academic and wellbeing elements to be delivered to your sons and daughters. And your immediate feedback has been important to gather support for proposed delivery of parent teacher events through the coming months.

I am indebted to the Staff for their thoughtful presentations that allow you clarity of understanding and opportunity for engagement in the home school partnership that is so vital to our operation.

Secondary families will have heard of the Resilience Project that is being introduced in pastoral time. All Staff have been provided with professional development to undertake this segment of our wellbeing program. The Resilience Project. Finding Happiness Through Gratitude Empathy and Mindfulness is the title of Hugh van Cuylenburg’s book which provides structure to the curriculum we are rolling out. If you wish to read a text that will help you and your family this year, this is the book to read. If we needed further validation for ways to lead a happier, more contented and fulfilling life after experiencing all that 2020 and COVID has thrown at us, then this book will support you as a family through these times with simple ways to engage in a happier and more fulfilling life. In the so-called attention economy, as Van Cuylenberg notes, “it is not only adolescents who are increasingly immersing themselves in their smartphones and tablets. I have lost count of how many times parents have approached me after a presentation to confess to feeling guilty about looking at a little screen when they know they should be engaging with their kids…. We are being targeted by social media platforms that use manipulative techniques designed to keep us coming back to our screens… the attention economy is a monster, and it feeds on our time.”

I am frequently asked why mental health issues are so prevalent in society today. The answer is complex. However, we are all guilty to a greater or lesser extent to failing our friends and family when they need us most. The use of smartphones is one of my biggest bugbears… their ping or vibration taking time out of a meeting, the incessant checking for FOMO… and so on. It saddens me to constantly witness family groups out together only to witness limited conversation and constant focus on their individual smartphones. As you focus on the year ahead, please remember the value your children place in the time you share with them.

The Year 11 students are off on their marathon 7 terms of work preparing themselves for the requirements of an HSC study routine and the necessary mindset and study schedule to allow for all their courses require. These seven terms of study are a marathon run at sprint pace; being aware of what is required and how to support your HSC student is important as we work in team with you all. Thus, the presentation from Mr Walmsley and Mrs Murray on Monday evening set the scene so well of what will be required for all our students and the support we need from parents in backing our expectations and study requirements.

We are very much into the pace and style of our academic year. Students will have seen all their teachers by now, will have knowledge of subject expectations, assessments, and homework schedules. Whilst the Information Evenings will have addressed many issues, I encourage you to contact key personnel if you are in doubt or should your son or daughter be unsure or concerned about any aspect of their schooling. Details of these Staff members are easily accessed online from our School Directory found on the School Portal here.

PHPA AGM

At the AGM of the PHPA held last Friday, we were able to reflect on the great support from this small and supremely hard-working Committee. 2020 was such a challenge for the PHPA to find its place when virtually all the events synonymous with its being were cancelled. Headed up by Kate Parsons, these wonderful parents have only the future success for Pittwater House students at heart. So, my sincere thanks to Kate, to the Treasurer Asia Punter, Shannon Harcourt heading up Volunteers and Petrina Rousel heading up the Network structure for their work. We welcomed Sheridan Milward as the new Co President with Kate Parsons, Sam Beard as Treasurer, Nicole Hallet as Secretary and Caroline Trotman as a member.

PHAA Breakfast Meeting

This morning with our Head Prefects Mali and Nick and the President of the Alumni Association Anthony Buckton (Class of '85), we gathered for our first breakfast meeting of the year. Mali's father is also an Alumnus. Through the year the PHAA will provide a range of opportunities to showcase their work to our Class of 2021.

My best wishes to you all for the weeks ahead.

Year 12 Geography

Barangaroo and Millers Point Fieldwork

The Year 12 Geography class finally got to conduct some fieldwork after missing out last year due to COVID 19 restrictions. The students visited Barangaroo and Millers Point as part of their study of urban dynamics. Barangaroo is an excellent example of an urban renewal project. It is 22 hectares in size and will have 11 hectares of open space when complete. It will house 1800 people and provide employment for 23000 people. South Barangaroo is open for business and demonstrates many environmentally sustainable measures such as being carbon neutral and water positive, whilst Central Barangaroo is still being developed. Millers Point is an example of urban renewal through gentrification. It is an interesting suburb with old workers cottages which have been restored. The class had a great day visiting these beautiful harbour suburbs.

Sustainability Group

On the 4th of February, the following students have shown hard work and participation when giving up their lunch to work on the Sustainability Garden: Yarra (C8), Nicolas (G9), Brandon, Rory and Ethan (G10) and Chloe, Paris and Anfisa (C12).

The progress achieved is highly impressive as the student garden had of course not been tended to over the summer holidays and was overgrown with weeds to the extent that the soil and wood pieces could not be seen. We were able to clear the garden fully and prepare it for new soil.

In the coming weeks, the Sustainability group will be able to start planting crops, which will help the School Canteen with gathering fresh food for the Pittwater House community.

Also, a massive thank you to Ms Lamplough and Mr Hine who are making this possible.

It is literally a 'grass roots' student project...

Anfisa (C12)
