Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to our amazing community for your support this term. Despite high levels of illness in students and staff beyond what we would normally experience, we have had a very busy eventful term. We have been able to continue with our planned events from Band Camp, Sydney North Dance Concerts, Multicultural Competition, Cross Country Carnival, Athletics Carnival, Debating, Chess Club, Code Club, Choir, SRC activities, disco and the painting of the Mural and most importantly keeping our students on track academically.

Staff News

This week we farewell Ms Barrett and wish her all the best. We welcome Ms Dougal who will be teaching 4S for the remainder of the year, 4S will be known as 4D from term 3.

NAIDOC Week

This week we have welcomed Uncle Laurie to celebrate NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC Week is a time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of First Nation Peoples – recognising them as the Traditional Owners of the land. The theme ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’ encourages all of us to champion change, while celebrating those who have already driven and led change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over generations.

Interschool Chess Challenge 2022

Congratulations to our Chess Team, Oliver Z, Antoni M, Alison L, Vihaan V, Evan K, Claire Y and Lewis K who were placed second in the Inter School Chess Challenge on June 16.

Athletics Carnival

The weather was kind to us and the students and staff were looking forward to a wonderful day of fun and competition. I was extremely proud of the students who participated with so much enthusiasm. I commend our senior students who enthusiastically participated in every race to earn points for their school house. Sportsmanship and perseverance were the themes for the day. Well done NPS and thank you Mr Hills and Ms Spender for your organisation of a successful carnival. Good Luck to all the students who will be competing at the Zone Athletics Carnival.

Creating Futures – education changes lives

Each year, Department of Education schools open their doors to parents/caregivers and the community to showcase a snapshot of the excellence that exists in public schools. Education Week is a state-wide, annual event to celebrate public education in NSW. This year Normanhurst will be celebrating Education Week on August 25. We have combined Book Week, Science Week and Education Week. We look forward to sharing and showcasing Normanhurst Public School excellence with you.

Buzz and Bop!

The students in Buzz and Bop have been diligently working on their dance every Friday at lunch time and last week performed it at the K - 2 assembly. They were so excited, and once the nerves settled and they were in position, they entertained the crowd with their abilities and personalities! We are so proud of you and cannot wait for the next performance. Congratulations Buzz and Bop students. If your child would like to join Buzz and Bop next term and they are in Year 1 or Year 2, come along to 2F after eating time on Friday.  Everyone is welcome!

Below is the link for you to view our entertainers.

Budding Reading!

Every Wednesday, 6M and 6P get together with their buddies in KE, KT and 1KH for buddy reading. We are currently reading through lots of amazing books as part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. After reading a few books, we stay and have lunch together in the sunshine. Here’s what some of our Year 6 and Kindergarten students have to say about buddy reading:

Buddy reading... hard at reading!

Science Incursion - Kindy

On Wednesday, Kaleidoscope Science visited our Kindergarten students and we learnt all about matter! We learnt about solids, liquids and gases and the way they can transform from one to the other. We even got to help out with some of the experiments!

Dance!!

Oh, what a night! Last Wednesday 22 June, our Junior and Senior Dance Groups performed at Sydney North Dance Festival. Both groups have worked incredibly hard throughout this semester amidst absences and cancelled sessions to prepare for their very first performance. The Junior Dance Group performed to ‘Let’s Get Loud’, and the Senior Dance Group performed to a ‘Circle of Life’ remix.

It was such a special moment to hear the roar of an audience after 2 years without live performances. Both groups were truly spectacular and should be very proud. The dance groups will also be performing at this week’s K-6 Assembly to share their hard work with their peers and teachers.

Well done to all our sensational dancers and a big thank you to the amazing Normanhurst parents for getting them to the theatre and cheering loudly in support.

Dance photos... they look great!

Lost Property - Please check!

Lost Property

Our lost property basket each week is overflowing with jackets and hats!  Also we have numerous 'other items' handed in that are kept in the office draw, so if you child has lost any item - please remind your child or children to check lost property and ask in the office.

Please ensure that all your items are labelled with both their first and last name clearly - otherwise it won't find it's way back home!

Thank you!

Canteen News

Thank you to all those who have volunteered their time this term to help in the canteen, it makes things run more smoothly and helps the children get served quicker at the counter. Your help is much appreciated and the Children do love seeing parents or grandparents at the counter. A special mention to those who helped for Hot Dog Day when we had 280 orders!

A regular canteen week we have about 350 orders, with many items cooked in the canteen and needing to be finished at the last minute, having a helper does ensure things run smoothly and the children’s waiting time at the counter is less when they come up to buy.

Please consider helping for an hour or so over the lunch rush to pack and serve. The roster is on School24 or email me on canteen@npspandc.com

Hope your children enjoy the holidays.

2023 Cultural Diversity Calendar

Normanhurst Public School will again participate in the Calendar for Cultural Diversity art initiative. In the past we have had some of our talented student’s artwork selected and they have been featured in the calendar.

The Calendar for Cultural Diversity promotes intercultural understanding, cultural and linguistic diversity, community harmony and social inclusion across NSW public schools and their communities.

Each year, NSW public schools are invited to submit student artwork for possible inclusion in the Calendar for Cultural Diversity around a given theme.

The theme of the 2023 Calendar for Cultural Diversity is “Creating Connections”. Each year the Calendar for Cultural Diversity also includes a page on the relevant lunar year (and its Australian zodiac equivalent) and 2023 is the Lunar Year of the Rabbit / Platypus. The artwork can also be on this theme.

The due date is Friday 29 th July (end of Week 2, Term 3).

All artwork submissions must be emailed as a photo, to the school email address normanhurs-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au before this date. They will be forwarded to Mrs Brisot for possible selection. If we are inundated with fantastic artworks ☺ Mrs Brisot will make a final decision and select 4 artworks for submission. If your artwork is selected, you will be notified and you will possibly need to bring it in immediately for mailing (sometimes the quality of the photo is good enough for printing and they will use the photo).

Artwork: must be A3 or A2 size for reproduction purposes (not A4). Possible media includes:

· drawing – inks, felt pens, charcoal, pastels, crayons

· mixed media – collage, photo montage

· painting – watercolour, oils, acrylic, gouache, poster paints, sgraffito

· photography – cameras can be conventional, polaroid, digital, disposable
