Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 7: Term 2, Week 5 - Monday, 17 May 2021

From the Principal's desk

Welcome to Week 5! - I was on leave last Friday, but by all accounts it was a great day at school! Congratulations to Year 1 who had their first assembly with a live audience in the hall since beginning school, and well done to the school netball team on their success as well.

Our thoughts continue to be with the families in our school community who have close connections to India, and any other areas of the world suffering at this point in time.

National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) - Congratulations to all Year 3 and 5 students for their efforts last week. The students approached the assessments calmly and confidently throughout the week and should be congratulated. Well done to Miss Lavis for successfully coordinating our first year of NAPLAN online.

Old Books, New Books, Other Books - Tomorrow, we will have a special visit from the QBD mini bookshop; a van full of wonderful books for sale. Today, students have provided a list of books they love to their home class teachers, so we can restock our library with the wonder and delight of their favourite books and authors.

Many parents have also recently asked me whether we take donations of old books at our school – YES, we do! These books can benefit our library, our classrooms, and many families in our community.

Nowadays, with so much information available to us in various formats, it is important to ensure we provide our children with the time, space and opportunity to get lost in books on a regular basis. This can involve reading to them, with them, or simply allowing them to read independently. Routines certainly help, as does having access to great books they enjoy. Encouraging your child to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge is one way to do this. Yes, they might say “no”, initially, but they are usually just testing to see if we as teachers and parents are really committed to our request. Mrs Biar is the main contact at school if you need support getting started with this. The ability to effectively read and understand enhances all aspects of our lives, and therefore, should be a priority for our whole school community.

Attendance News - Congratulations to our students, parents and carers for the improved whole school attendance rate we’ve achieved over the past three years. 2018 - 92.9%, 2019 - 94.1%, 2020 - 94.8%. A 2% increase, equates to an additional 600 days of school being attended across our student population for the year. This is a great achievement, with the school now being above the state average for the past two years. Our current attendance rate this year is 92.1%.

A major area for improvement at our school, is decreasing the number of students who have an attendance rate lower than 90%. As of today, 42 students (28.5%) are in this category. If this pattern continues, these students will miss more than 20 days of school this year, almost three terms (minimum) over their primary school years, and five terms from Kindergarten to Year 12.

I will continue to work closely with our Assistant Principals, classroom teachers, Learning Support Team and families, to ensure every student has the opportunity to reach their full learning potential.

 The Everyday Maths Hub - The evidence shows that when parents and carers engage with schools on mathematics and numeracy, students' engagement with and attitude towards maths is enhanced.

The Everyday Maths Hub has been designed to support families to:

  • develop and support positive attitudes towards mathematics and numeracy at home;
  • empower their children to think critically and creatively;
  • find and solve problems;
  • notice and wonder about the mathematics in the world around them.

Spotlight on Year 1

The Year 1 students have been very busy learning and having fun. We have been learning lots of different maths games to help primarily with addition and subtraction. Mrs Young has also been teaching some new games.

We have all really enjoyed participating in Bluearth this year. They have fully thrown themselves into every game that the Bluearth leader has taught them, and they particularly enjoy when it is a chasing game and they can chase and catch Mrs Biar!

The Year 1's have enjoyed getting to know Mr Powys. He has been teaching them art and health.

We have enjoyed having some parent helpers come in to help students log in to Phonics Hero. Having that extra pair of hands is invaluable! Thank you to Claire Lawson, Jos Burey and Sarah Finlay who have assisted us.

The Year 1 class led the school assembly last Friday. They did a fantastic job both with their lines and in performing the song ‘Sun, Moon and Stars’, which is based on our Science unit. I was very proud of them all!

They may be little, but Year 1 students are full of enthusiasm for learning!

Southern Riverina Cross Country

On Monday, 3 May, 30 Holbrook Public students and Miss Hemphill travelled to Lockhart to participate in the Southern Riverina Cross Country Carnival. All of the students did a wonderful job and participated with excitement and enjoyment. They even ran through the finish line with smiles on their faces!

There were many students who placed in the top ten, however, only the first four runners proceed to the Riverina carnival, with students placing fifth and sixth as reserves. Congratulations to the following students who will be heading to the Riverina Cross Country Carnival in Gundagi on 10 June:

Well done to all students who participated, for their great efforts and sportsmanship, regardless of their finishing place. These fantastic efforts and attitudes are the reason Holbrook Public School won both the Handicap and the overall Cross Country carnival. A huge achievement!

Thank you also to Kelly Boers for helping capture the day.

Year 6 Peer Support Camp

Year 6 had a fantastic time at the Great Aussie Holiday Park on Thursday, 6 May and Friday, 7 May. The students learned about being a Peer Support leader and discussed many aspects involved in being a leader. They also participated in team building activities and challenges throughout the two days. The Year 6 students are looking forward to beginning their Peer Support groups next Wednesday. A big thank you to Mrs Wedgwood, who accompanied us on the camp and delivered the group leader lessons. Thanks must also go to Maricar Lieschke who kindly offered to transport the students and me to and from the camp.

PSSA Netball Knockout

On Friday, 14 May our netball girls played a game against Henty Public School as part of Round 2 in the PSSA Netball Knock Out competition (we had a bye in Round 1). The girls played together as a team extremely well, and everyone was versatile, playing in different positions. Although the weather was cool, the sportsmanship and enthusiasm was on fire! The girls had a very comfortable win, winning 28-1, but there was some tough competition, and the game was played in a friendly spirit.

Thanks to all the parents, classes and teachers who came out to cheer the girls on. Your encouragement was fantastic. Thank you to Isaac, Eli and Cooper, who showed great leadership by not only welcoming the Henty people to our school and ensuring they were COVID compliant, but also scoring and time keeping. A huge thank you to Kelly Boers who agreed to umpire for us.

Our next game will be played against either Lavington Public School or Thurgoona Public School.

Voluntary School Contributions

The School Voluntary Contribution for each student this year is $35.00 per child, however, feel free to contribute more, if your budget allows.

That’s around 18¢ per child, per school day!

This contribution allows us to purchase teaching resources as well as writing books, stationery, art supplies and library books; all of which your child benefits from. Please call into the office to pay via cash or EFTPOS, or you can also pay online via the school website in the ‘make a payment’ tab.

Thank you to those families who have already contributed.

2021 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge

I hope everyone is continuing to read their books and register their reading online.

With the cold weather setting in, it’s a great time to settle in with a good book!

Reading closes Friday, 20 August.
