Dernancourt School R-7 Newsletter

FROM KELLIE

Welcome back!

Dear families,

I hope that you enjoyed the 2 weeks’ holiday break with your child. We were very lucky to have had such perfect April holiday weather –a great opportunity to recharge the batteries. We hope that you are all ready for a busy Term 2!

It has been wonderful to see staff and students returning enthusiastically to their Term 2 learning. Class newsletters will be coming home over the next week to inform you about the topics being covered in each class, please ensure you read these so that you are aware of class activities and can ask your child about their learning.

Our Parent Association is eagerly wrapping and preparing gifts for our Mothers' Day stall to be held on Friday May 10th.  All gifts will be $5, students will visit the stall with their class to purchase their gifts, with the stall re-opening at lunch time for those needing to purchase an “extra” gift.

We are once again thankful to Jane for coordinating a special Mothers' Day breakfast again this year.  We look forward to sharing breakfast and celebrating the contribution that all Mothers make to our school community with our special guests tomorrow.  Thanks to those that have returned their RSVP to our special invitation.

I would like to wish all the mothers, grandmothers and special mother caregivers a very happy Mothers' Day next Sunday May 12th.  I hope every mother enjoys being spoilt by their loved ones.

Enjoy the fortnight ahead.

NAPLAN 14th, 15th & 16th May

Next week (Week 3), 0ur students in Years 3, 5 & 7 will participate in the NAPLAN tests. NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) is a nationally developed test. The tests assess several aspects of literacy and numeracy and are administered simultaneously in all schools across Australia. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, States and systems with information about how education programs are working and what areas need to be prioritised for improvement. All students are encouraged to participate and the best way that parents can help their child prepare for the NAPLAN is to assure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. If you would like to withdraw your child from the NAPLAN test, please see me this week to sign the required forms.

2019 Public Education Awards

Would you like to nominate, recognise and celebrate an outstanding DSR-7 educator  in the 2019 Public Education Awards?

An educator’s influence continues beyond the classroom and supports children and young people to reach their full potential in life. We all remember a teacher who inspired and motivated us to enjoy learning, and the awards honour the dedication and passion of individuals who deliver the best possible outcomes for young people and their families.

Get involved and say thank you to a leader, teacher or support staff member making a significant difference to the lives of DSR-7 students and  community.

The Public Education Awards are entering their 9th year and we’re excited to share excellence in South Australian public education and invite you to celebrate and recognise an educator who makes a positive impact every day.

The Public Education Awards recognise excellence in South Australian public education, and nominations are open 1 to 31 May. Visit www.education.sa.gov.au/awards to nominate and find out more about the awards.

Canteen News

Winter is coming and this means our new winter warmer canteen menu is out. We have some great new additions to the menu like sweet and sour chicken while some of our summer items have been removed. Classics like hot dogs and pizza slices remain all year round!

Be sure to check out the new menu on the school website, skoolbag app or on QKR (for online orders). This menu lists all items available for lunch orders and the canteen maintains snack foods available for purchase at recess and lunchtime, dependent on supply and demand.

Once again this term we will be having two special canteen days.  The first is on sports day with our sausage sizzle, so the whole family can all join in and have a nice hot lunch all while supporting the canteen!!!  Our second special day will be a Birthday Celebration in Week 7 with the Queen's birthday long weekend giving us cause for celebration! Special lunch order days are a great opportunity for the canteen to sell items that cannot be on the everyday menu and for families to support our canteen.

Finally a special mention this month for all the delicious and nutritious canteen made food that Tracy cooks.  While some food like pies and dino nuggets are a simple heat and eat Tracy prepares and cooks the majority of menu items.  This ensures that high quality ingredients and classic recipes give the kids great options for "home made" food any day!

Once again thanks to all families who support the school canteen whether just on special days, with regular orders or simply over the counter snacks.

We always welcome new volunteers and if you are able to donate some of your time please lets us know via email dl.0982.canteen@ schools.sa.edu.au
