Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 2: Term 1, Week 5 - Monday, 22 February 2021

From the Principal's desk

Welcome to Week 5! - It was wonderful to invite parents and carers in to the school once again last week for our Parent Information Sessions. We are truly looking forward to the day when the community can visit freely again. For now though, unless you have a pre-arranged meeting, you are picking up a sick child or you are helping with canteen lunches, please limit your visits to the front office. Whilst we didn’t quite have the number of parents/carers that we usually get for parent information sessions, it was great to offer this opportunity. If you weren’t able to make it, by now you should have received a term newsletter and a student information sheet which needs to be returned to home class teachers. If you don’t have either of these, please contact the office or your child’s home class teacher.

School Survey Winner - Thank you to all of the families who completed our recent survey, which was discussed at our parent information sessions and sent out via SkoolBag for those who weren’t in attendance. From the 94 families at our school, we received 18 responses (19%), which is a large increase from previous surveys. Today, School Prefect Jasmine Lieschke drew the winner, and we would like to congratulate Claire Lawson, who won the $50 IGA gift card. Even though the prize has been drawn, we would still like to receive more surveys to help guide the school’s future directions. The community’s feedback and perspective is extremely important to us in our journey towards excellence. Every family has a voice and will be listened to.

AFL Trials - School AFL trials will be held at school tomorrow during breaks throughout the day. Notes will be sent home on Tuesday afternoon. The Southern Riverina AFL trials will be held at Billabong High School on Friday, 26 February. Apologies for the late notice. I believe the hold up in announcing the date was finding a local ground to host the trials at.

NSW AFL Primary All-Schools Girls 12 Years & Under Selection Trial - The Southern Inland NSW Girls u12 AFL trials will be held on Thursday, 25 March 2021 (Week 9, Term 1) at Jubilee Park, Wagga Wagga. These trials are for those who are highly interested and/or showing talent in the sport. Registrations close at 5:00 p.m. Friday, 12 March 2021.

Good Luck Mrs Henderson - This week will be Mrs Henderson’s final week at school for 2021, as she will be taking maternity leave. We wish Chontelle and her family all the best in the coming weeks and look forward to her return in 2022. Due to difficulty in filling Chontelle’s teaching position through multiple state wide advertisements, Mrs Wedgwood has agreed to return in the short term until we can find a teacher to take on the role for the remainder of the year. Further information will be provided as soon as it becomes available. Thanks, Mrs Wedge!

NRL - Values Talk - At school, we have been speaking to the students about values more regularly this year, so it was wonderful to have a visit from the NRL to reinforce some of these positive messages. These NRL talks focus on seven key values: respect, honesty, teamwork, resilience, gratitude, support and inclusion, however, the three we focused on were respect, resilience and gratitude. Some of the key messages included:

  • It’s not about how you fall, it’s how you get back up.
  • You win or you learn. You never lose if you’re learning.
  • Attitude is gratitude. Have a positive mindset.
  • Try (new things), Learn (from the highs and lows), Grow (through making mistakes).

Smiling Mind Mindfulness Curriculum Time Sequence - The P&C recently requested that the community be kept in the loop regarding the Smiling Mind focus areas being taught at school so they could also be reinforced at home. It takes a community to raise a child, and wherever we can work in partnership, we should.

Weeks 3 and 4 - Awareness - To build the foundational mindfulness skills of self-knowledge and self-perception.

Weeks 5 and 6 - Attention - To develop an understanding of attention and develop the skills of attention and focus.

Weeks 7 and 8 - The Senses - To foster social and self-awareness by increasing sensory awareness.

Week 9 - Savouring - To foster self-awareness and social-awareness by learning to savour experiences.

Week 10 - Revision

Premier's Debating Challenge - Mrs Pargeter and Miss Morgan have entered a team, the Holbrook Public Submariners, in the 2021 5/6 Premier's Debating Challenge, and will be soon be looking for participants. Being able to communicate and collaborate effectively within a team environment to solve challenges is a highly sought after skill that can be developed throughout this program. I encourage students to consider this great opportunity.

Spotlight on Year 5/6

Year 5/6 have started 2021 with so much happening. There have been swimming carnivals, sports trials, new responsibilities, new teachers and even an assembly on Friday. The students worked hard to learn their desk drumming item for assembly and thoroughly entertained the audience. Nate Kenney was awarded the class’ ‘Star of the Week’, and Isobel Atkinson was voted the senior ‘Aussie of the Month’. Well done to Nate and Issy.

The students enjoy having Mrs Wedgwood on Mondays for Creative Arts and have begun drawing detailed pictures of a dragon’s eye. We are looking forward to seeing the finished pieces.

Justin and Abby have begun their Aurora College classes online. They are working hard to learn how to operate different programs they will be using and look forward to getting into their classes.

Year 5/6 students are looking forward to the many opportunities they have to lead others in the school this year. They have been busy helping their Kindergarten buddies settle into big school and have been invaluable.

SR Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to the 24 students who attended the Southern Riverina swimming carnival last Thursday at the Lavington Swim Centre. The students displayed excellent sportsmanship and swam well. A huge thank you to the parents who helped out on the day as timekeepers and those that came to support the students. It was wonderful to have you back at a school event and hear you all cheering for the students. A huge thank you must go to Margot Pitzen for organising some training sessions for the students. It is very much appreciated and makes a massive difference in preparation for our students.

Our students gave their best all day, many achieving personal bests and several students gaining first, second or third place in their events.

Holbrook Public School successfully won the Overall Champion School and came second in the Handicap Champion School once again. This was a fantastic team effort from the students!

A special congratulations to Ollie Cardile (Junior Boy champion), Chace Liddell (Junior Boy Runner Up), Abby Pincott (11 Year Girl Runner Up), Jasmine Lieschke (Senior Girl Champion) and Georgie Cardile (Senior Girl Runner Up). What a tremendous effort by these students.

Congratulations to our Junior boys (Ollie Cardile, Chace Liddell, Will Glass, Cess Lieschke) and Senior girls (Jasmine Lieschke, Georgie Cardile, Abby Pincott, Laycii Freund) relay teams. They both set new records. The junior boys (3.01.88) broke Jindera’s 2018 record (3.04.19), and the senior girls (2.46.69) broke Holbrook’s 2012 record (2.48.61). Abby Pincott (49.81) and Alice Hearn (51.00), who came second and third respectively in the 11 girl backstroke, also broke Freya Mackinlay’s 2013 record (51.13). The first place recipient will hold the record — an outstanding effort.

We will have several students qualify to attend the Riverina Swimming Carnival to be held at the Leeton Swimming Centre on Wednesday, 10 March. Permission notes have been handed out today.

Well done to all students.

Tennis Trials

Congratulations to Cooper Glass, Georgie Cardile and Will Glass, who were selected to represent Holbrook Public School at the Albury Zone tennis trials on Thursday, 11 February at the Thurgoona tennis courts. They played several games during the day and represented the school proudly. Well done to these students.

Holbrook Public School students will be participating in annual Clean Up Australia Day activities on Friday, 5 March. Students will clean up areas in and surrounding Holbrook Public School. By participating in this event, students are encouraged to consider the impact of rubbish on our local environment, and consider how they as individuals and a school community, can work together to reduce this impact.

The Clean Up Australia Day Council have provided us with a small number of gloves and bags to use for the day. However, we are requesting that students who have gardening gloves at home, bring them to ensure everyone has at least one glove. This will make sure there is a sufficient number of gloves for students to participate safely in the event.
