PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

We have had a busy couple of weeks as usual here at Scarborough PS. Please read below for some information on what has been happening and what we have to look forward to!

NAPLAN Online

We are one week into the two week NAPLAN testing period for 2019. 5 tests have so far been completed across years 3 and 5, with 3 further testing sessions scheduled for next week. It is the first time our school, along with the majority of other schools in the state, has accessed the testing through the online format.

I’m sure you have seen in the media reports of connectivity issues causing significant stress to students and staff administering the tests. Our experience here at Scarborough PS has been very positive. Whilst we suffered some minor loss of connectivity that lasted for a few seconds here and there, these glitches did not seem to cause any undue stress or worry to students. These minor disruptions have been far outweighed by the benefits of the testing being so much more engaging for students than the written format and the fact that online testing allows for differentiation in the questions given to individual students depending on how they are progressing during the test. These two factors in themselves make the online format less stressful and more meaningful for our students. They will also help to provide more meaningful data to support schools in developing the best programs to ensure student progress.

Several times these weeks I have reflected on how our students, being digital natives who have grown up in the technological era, probably coped better than many of the adults involved with implementing this new initiative. Whilst there are clearly a few bugs to be ironed out before next year, it is a format that I hope the Department will choose to continue with moving forward.

The Fathering Project

Below in this newsletter our wonderful chaplain, Will Veldman, has outlined some information on the Fathering Project, an initiative that we are hoping to facilitate the engagement of our families in. Please take the time to read it. An information session has been organised where interested dads can meet up at Doubleview Bowling Club at 7.00pm on Wednesday June 12 to learn more about the project and how it could benefit themselves, their families and our community. If you are interested in attending and would like some more information, please let Will know either in person or via the front office. There is a link in Will’s article below to register for the event.

Bikes and Scooters Before and After School

Just a reminder to all that bikes and scooters should not be ridden inside the school grounds before and after school. Whilst we encourage students to be active and walk/ride/scoot to school, for safety reasons, we ask that they walk their vehicles once inside school grounds.  On arrival at school, students bringing their bikes and scooters should walk them through the school grounds and immediately park them in the racks provided. They should then head directly to the undercover area if arriving before 8:35am or straight to their classrooms if arriving after 8:35am.

Can I also please remind students that under no circumstances should they be taking bikes or scooters that belong to other people to play on before or after school. We have had a few incidents where such behaviour has resulted in worry to students and their families and in one case damage to a vehicle. We would like your assistance to avoid any more instances like this in the future

Deputy's Desk

One of the wonderful resources we have available to us at Scarborough Primary School is our chaplain, Will Veldman. We would really appreciate your feedback on Will's role within our school, from a community perspective. The link below will take you to a survey that will take no more than 5 minutes to complete. Thank you so much for your time and support.

THE FATHERING PROJECT at SCARBOROUGH PRIMARY SCHOOL

When I first became a dad, I remember the bleary-eyed conversations with other new dads. We would half-laugh/half-cry about how little sleep we had gotten that night. We’d cover the things we didn’t expect about parenting and then share the way our lives had changed dramatically in an instant. It was pretty honest and true. As life as a new parent found its rhythms and a number of us had more children, those conversations seemed to be less frequent and the busy and fractured nature of life threatened to win out.

Over the last few years, a group called the Fathering Project has come into my view more and more. A good friend of mine spoke in a number of their videos and over a coffee one day he shared with me a little about what it is that they do. The Fathering Project is essentially an organisation that exists to support and connect dads, and one of the main ways they do this is by encouraging dads in school communities to meet up and do activities together. Sometimes it just the dads that meet up, other times it’s the dads and their kids all together doing something. It made me think about my own parenting, and how much I value the support and mateship of other dads in my life.

Here at Scarborough Primary School, we’ve been chatting with the team at the Fathering Project about the possibility of building up what we already have at Scarborough Primary School. The ball has been rolling and we’re at the point where we’ve set up a night for one of their guys to come out and chat with any interested dads. On Wednesday June 12, we’re going to meet up at the Doubleview Bowling Club at 7pm. We’ll hang out together for some drinks and/or food, and then from 7.30pm for just over an hour, Steve from the Fathering Project will chat with us about what it is they do and how they might be able to support us as SPS dads.

It would be amazing to get quite a few of us down there, so if you are interested [or if you’re a mum and you have a partner who you know would be keen to come along] we’d love to see you there. Bring an SPS mate, and register here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/fathering-project-night-tickets-61977993848

If you have any questions, please feel free to catch me in and around the school, or chat to our Principal, Sarah Dawson.

The Book Fair was another great success. Due to the generosity of the community the school library has received $740 worth of new resources for your children to read and enjoy.

Scarborough Snack Shack - VOLUNTEERS

Business is booming!  We are now preparing and delivering over 30 crunch and sips, 50 recess items and more than 80 lunches every Friday - and I could really use an extra pair of hands to help get the lunch run done.

If you're available between 11:45am and 1:15pm on a Friday, please register via QuickCliq under Volunteering, or contact Jackie on 0422 977 208.  You just need a hat, enclosed shoes and a smile, I'll provide the apron, plus your child can have a FREE Meal Deal for your efforts … without a helper, getting these hungry kids fed on time can be tricky!

Thanks

Jackie
