Term 4 Activities and Events

We have made some adjustments to our Term 4 activities this year. We will be holding Presentation Assembly here at Newport and plan for it to run like our Zoom assemblies and our picnic day will involve alternate arrangements to The Basin and Narrabeen. Stay tuned for more details to follow.

Communicating with our School

From time to time parents may need to approach the school in order to discuss the progress or welfare of their child, to express concern about the actions of other students, to enquire about school policies and practices or to report an incident. It is important to remember that sometimes all of the information surrounding an issue or incident is not always known by the person making the report and that issues can be viewed from different perspectives. At all times, the school’s aim is to be “solutions focused” in resolving issues, underpinned by values of respect, responsibility, trust and fairness and guided by the department’s processes.  The first person to see if you have an issue to resolve is your child’s class teacher. Please get in touch by phone (99994100) or email newport-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au. If you need to speak with an executive or have questions regarding other matters, please direct your enquiry to the school office. Included in this Natter, is our Communication Protocol and Social Media Rules of Engagement that are underpinned by the Department’s School Community Charter.

Year 5 PBL – What a Disaster!

Last Wednesday, Year 5 students presented their websites, created on Google Sites about natural disasters, to their peers and teachers. Aside from producing outstanding websites, the students were able to articulate their learning by discussing the challenges and obstacles they faced during their projects and how they overcame these. Through these discussions it was evident that students learnt to manage timeframes and due dates, share roles and responsibilities, provided and received feedback, understood reliable information sources and aimed to create an outstanding product.

Congratulations students for your effort and willingness to critically reflect on your work.  Thank you, Miss Rohowicz, Mrs Walter, Mrs Elliott and Mrs Campbell, for facilitating such quality learning.

Please use the instructions in the pdf below to access the websites.

Our talented Year 5

Sam Bloom – ‘Newport Mum’ and Author of Heart Ache and Birdsong

In week 2, Sam Bloom, accompanied by husband Cameron, visited the school and spoke to Years 5 and 6. The students were privileged to hear Sam’s story of loss, courage and gratitude. We’re extremely grateful to Sam for her time and for delivering a message that everyone is better for hearing. Thanks, so much Sam and Cameron.

Pyjama Day

As a result of Sam’s visit, the Ministers wanted to support her affiliated charity, SpinalCure to which they pledged $400. Thank you everyone for supporting the Minister’s fundraising efforts and having some fun in your PJs last Thursday. The Ministers were able to fulfil their pledge as well as having an extra $387 to go towards the Year 6 gift to the school.

Year 6 – initiatives – Online Talent Show - Written by Louisa S.

The band and orchestra captains are aiming to hold a COVID-safe, online talent show including instruments and voices.

If your child would like to enter they need to video themselves while playing their instrument and upload the clip to Google Classroom, password: 2ym3q4r.

If your child posts a clip, they need to give their age, year and class and their performance’s title and composer on a piece of paper to a band captain (Louisa S., Harry P. or Annabelle S.) or to Mr Stevenson in the 6NS classroom.

Performances should be no longer than two minutes and have your child in view.

The judges, awarding prizes to the best entries, will be the band and orchestra captains.

The best performances will be showcased on a Zoom assembly with your child’s permission.

Learning Across the School: Year 1 Project Based Learning

This term, Year 1 students will become “Resource Rangers”.

Students attended an engaging incursion by an ecologist and a staff member from Kimbriki Tip who introduced the 4Rs of Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Students will now use this framework to create a range of texts in response to the question “How can we persuade others to care for our community?”
