Term 2 Week 10, 29 June 2022

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

What a treat it has been to visit classrooms and hear some of the great speeches being presented. Many of the older students chose the topic ‘If I were the new Prime Minister’ and have reassured the teachers and I about the future of our country.

While it is relatively common to feel hesitant about public speaking, the ability to speak clearly to an audience is an important life skill. Students are well supported by their teachers during their speeches and are in the comfort of their own classrooms. By beginning in Kindergarten and building upon these skills each year, students gradually improve their skills. Students in Waratah have been presenting their speeches with Mrs Black during Miss Preston’s absence.

As we end the term, I thank all members of our school community for the efforts that have been made throughout the term. I hope that families found the information in the Semester 1 reports useful and clear. Teachers used a variety of assessments, including observations, samples of work, writing and quizzes, to determine exactly where every child is up to in their learning for each of the six Key Learning Areas. They then plan their programs for next term using all of this information. Praising your child for the effort they have made and talking about their goals for next semester can help your child see that together we value their learning.

Teacher Strike

Tomorrow, Thursday 30 June, the school will be non-operational due to the industrial action planned for public and Catholic school teachers. I apologise for the inconvenience caused by this.

I hope to see all students for the final day of Term 2 on Friday. We have a special music assembly and Year 6 have a PJ and movie day planned.

NAIDOC

NAIDOC week once again falls during the school holidays. In Week 1, classes will explore this year’s theme, Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and will develop personalised acknowledgement of Country statements for their classrooms.

Wakakirri

Creative Arts is one of the six Key Learning Areas we teach in primary school and consists of four strands: music, dance, drama and visual arts. This year, as you are aware, we are participating in Wakakirri, a story dance program held across Australia. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to involve the whole school in this exciting program as we are entering via video rather than performing live on stage, which would limit the number of performers.

This means the whole school has access to our wonderful dance teacher, and all students are building their confidence to move, dance and get involved. Lessons and rehearsals are well underway on Tuesday afternoons. Teachers are ’eagerly’ putting their creativity to the test to design a set and costumes. If you would like to get involved in the production, please let us know. A note with details for any additional costume items will be sent home early next term.

Soccer team

On Monday, the mountains small schools (Somersby, Peats Ridge, Central Mangrove and Kulnura public schools) formed a combined soccer team and competed against Erina Heights Public School for the PSSA Knockout competition. Unfortunately, their skills were not quite enough to win the game, although as expected, our students showed great teamwork and stamina. The team looked great in their new team shirts.

Spelling Bee

Just a reminder that we will hold the school Spelling Bee next term with winners eligible to compete on a regional final. The words that will be used in the Bee are available online at: https://artsunit.nsw.edu.au/program/nsw-premiers-spelling-bee

The password to access these lists is on display in all classrooms. Mrs Comensoli and the teachers can also pass it on. (We have been asked not to share it publicly in our newsletter).

The lists are great for building spelling skills as well as vocabulary knowledge, as they are arranged into categories. Levels 1, 2 and 3 contain many commonly used words (for example pasta, waste, victory, journey, justice). Beyond that, the words become less familiar and are designed to provide a challenge for our skilled spellers. I’m looking forward to seeing words such as lackadaisical, paraphernalia or annihilate in students’ writing next term.

Cyber safety

This week, classes have been completing cyber safety lessons to help our children learn to be safe online. Cyber safety is the safe and responsible use of online information. How and where you keep your personal information and who has access to it is important as many of us and our children spend a lot of time online whether it is for work, school or social purposes.

These lessons are part of our PDHPE (personal development, health and physical education) syllabus and reinforce child protection messages. For many parents, the online world can make us fearful for our children as there are many potential dangers, just as in the ‘real’ world. By teaching these lessons from a young age and working together, we aim to build knowledge and skills to protect our children.

Environment Group

Finally – our environment group has something to harvest! We have plenty of juicy and ripe oranges and mandarins available from vegie cart. The back playground was filled with giggles and smiles as the group worked together to collect the fruit. After the terrible weather of the first half of this year – the kids are ready to get cracking again.

Happy and safe holidays

I wish a very happy and fun holiday break for all of our students and families. The children have worked hard this term and have coped remarkably well with a semester marked with many absences among their friends and teachers. Please stay safe and well, and if possible, take the time to rest and rejuvenate ready for next term.

PMI Music

What an amazing term our students have had in their music lessons! The children so look forward to hanging out with their music tutor for their half-hour lesson and being challenged in their capacity as musicians. We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that enrolments are always open, and now is the perfect time to secure your child a place in the schedule to start next term.
