Tuesday 23rd July - Students Return to school

From the Principal- Ms Boyd

Term 2 is well under way with the students working productively in all classes. It is a pleasure to walk around the school and see how well our students are engaging in their learning programs and striving to achieve their personal best. The learning programs including ASDAN and School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) programs require that teachers collect evidence of achievement. Parents are welcome to view the student files and discuss them when we have our open classroom event after assembly on Tuesday the 2nd July.

During this cold weather it’s important to remember that students need to be in school uniform, which includes the school jumper. Uniform shop opening hours are Wed and Friday from 8.15 until 11.15am.

AESC is a committed Waste Wise school and we are actively committed to recycling and re-use principles. Students have been learning about recycling with Mrs Sorenson and we really appreciate seeing students using reusable drink bottles and bringing their lunch in reusable containers.

With the onset of Winter, we have started to see an increase in colds and flu. Our staff are just as prone to getting sick and make an effort to stay home if unwell. We certainly appreciate when families keep their child home when sick too. This is the best way to keep a healthy school.

From the Deputy- Mrs Marko

Half way through another busy term for us! We have had some amazing excursion happening throughout the school, but within Student Services we have been involved in some life changing ones. The boxing program through RecLink teaches the boys about the skill of boxing, but also about discipline, nutrition and self-control. The PotBlack program, although great fun to learn how to play pool and billiards, is also teaching about mindfulness, calmness, fine-motor skills and maths. The students are learning without even knowing it!!

Term 3 we are running some amazing ‘Girlz Groupz’ which will give the girls a chance to get out and experience some art therapy, life skills and team building. We are starting a partnership with Minnawarra House that is based on Numulgi Street in Armadale. They run some fantastic programs for kids and parents, so please have a look at what they have to offer for the Autumn program.

Our PBS focus for the end of Term 2 is making sure we meet the expected behaviour of ‘taking responsibility for our own choices’. The students have been displaying the expected behaviours, with a focus on using polite manners, like “please” and “thank you” and respectfully greeting each other in the morning.

Term 2 has been getting colder, and will continue to do so, so please remember to pop into the uniform shop for your winter uniform needs.

School Visitor Policy

The Department has a policy for visitors onsite that our school must follow to provide for the safety and welfare of students and staff on the school premises. Parents and carers who are recorded on the enrolment form as legal guardians of students enrolled at the school, and who attend the school premises regularly solely for the purposes of dropping off or picking up their children, do not need to sign in in Passtab. However if parents attend for any other purpose, including visiting the classroom to see a teacher they become subject to this policy. Thank you for helping to keep our students safe.

MS1- Miss Ash

Greetings from MS1!

Term Two has started great for us!

We welcome Jade Hadley and Oliver Lester who have joined us this term and have both settled in amazingly well. We have lots planned this term; we are still going strong (and superbly!) with our daily literacy and numeracy sessions, Music lessons with Mrs Sams Hayes where we are now learning how to make music on Garage Band, Art & Enterprise with Mrs Candeloro where we are almost done with all our items for Market Day and we are all looking forward to the few excursions we have planned for the term. We recently visited the Hobbs Art Gallery and the Armadale Reptile Centre.

We also had our PBS Fun Day where we dressed up to raise funds for the Black Cockatoo Foundation.

Later in the term, we will be going on an excursion to Woolworths and will be starting Community Access.

MS2- Mrs Kannan

Term 2 has been a very busy period with MS2 students being actively involved in completing their Art and Enterprise projects. Students worked tirelessly making beaded lanyards, key chains, pom pom hats, fridge magnets and coasters. It is great to see students take pride in their work and staying focused while working on the fine details of the products. Students are currently working on finalising the packaging and pricing while getting ready for market day.  As part of their Physical Education lessons students have been practicing to become more adept at playing basketball to prepare for the upcoming basketball carnival at Ray Owen Sports Centre. ASDAN Transition Challenge has been a huge focus for this term where students did activities around ‘Valuing Each Other’, ‘Around the Globe’ and the ‘Environment’. In completing these tasks students engaged in a fundraising activity to adopt a Carnaby Black Cockatoo, presenting PowerPoint slides on inspirational people and their favourite cities. Students also engaged in venturing into the differences between countries with regards to their, foods, climate, presidents and housing. As part of ANZAC day celebrations MS2 had an opportunity to participate in an ANZAC day incursion. Our Year 8 students also took the opportunity to  volunteer to role play in the different acts which portrayed the history of ANZAC day.

SS1- Mrs Mila

We have had lots happening over the past few weeks.

All our SCSA, Authority developed and ASDAN Endorsed programs, along with our carefully planned Co-curricular and Extracurricular programmes, our Leadership programme within Bushrangers and our Outdoor Learning programmes are all part of the holistic education that we provide at AESC.

All of these provide great opportunities for our students to improve their skills of leadership, collaboration and teamwork, commitment and responsibility, resilience, problem-solving, and persistence.

As a part of Right Track programme one of year 10 student Domenic Sauer is engaged in researching the Transperth resources and presenting his knowledge to his peers which is an exciting opportunity for young people to develop life skills and to improve their confidence.

COMMUNITY

Parent/Student/Teacher Individual Transition Planning – Thank you to the many parents in the Senior School who responded to the opportunity of discussing the transition planning of their child. As we always say your child’s progress is a partnership between Parent/Student and Teacher and together we can all do the best we can in assisting every student to achieve to the best of their ability. I am glad the parents appreciated the outcomes of these meetings with a positive feedback.

We incorporated our successful and inspiring Harmony Day activity a fashion parade with proud presentation of cultures, in to our ADCAP courses. All our lessons included a mutual exchange between staff and students.

SS2- Ms Jesionek

This semester our students are engaged in a variety of different programs around the school. Individual year 10, 11 and 12 students participate in Workplace Learning and Community Service. In the classroom, students actively engaging in programs targeting the individual needs of each student. This term, students have shown keen interests in completing their ASDAN modules and enterprise projects.

On the 13th of May students participated in the outing to the local shopping centre where they purchased food for the Dog’s Refuge in Shenton Park. Students were very well behaved and used their money skills to figure out the cheapest options to buy food.

On the following Monday a selected group of students visited the Dog’s Refuge Home in Shenton Park to donate food. It was very eye opening and enjoyable day for students and staff attending.

SS3- Mr Adamson & Ms Jenkins

Term 1 was a whirlwind of activity and Term 2 is proving to be no different. We’ve had numerous community service outings including volunteering at the wildlife rehabilitation centre and tree planting, training for the interschool basketball competition with Mr Adamson, attending workplace learning each week, presenting the end of term assembly, making poppies, creating a remembrance board and hosting the ANZAC incursion provided by the Armadale Museum, and finally, a whole class ADRP excursion to Cannington Bowling promoting PBS (positive behaviours), a great day enjoyed by all.

SS4- Ms Fleay

Our class decided to create great pot plants using wooden “pots” and we are finding it all harder than we realized. We collected great pieces of wood but it has proven harder than we thought to hollow the wood out.

Fortunately, mainstream Design and Technology came to our aid and slowly, slowly we are getting there. Here are two of our intrepid senior students on the job.

The aim is to plant our “pots” with a mixture of succulents  and to sell them on our Market Day early Term 3.

We will be giving an u pdate next newsletter. Wish us luck!

Year 8 ASDAN - Mrs Sorensen

This semester the year 8’s has chosen to adopt a Carnaby Black Cockatoo which are an endangered species in Western Australia through the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre in Martin by selling little bags of reusable bags as a fundraiser.

Phone calls and emails were made to Woolworths in Armadale and they generously agreed to donate 120 bags to the cause.

To make the little bags, students have to learnt cut fabric using a pattern, use an overlocker and a sewing machine as well as threading elastic with a bodkin and to hand sew the elastic.

The class went on an excursion to Armadale to take possession of the bags from the store manager Richard.

Richard on behalf of Woolworths generously gave the students 200 bags, which was greatly received by the class.

These little bags will sell full at $5.00 each or empty (because you might already have bags) for $1.00.

Online Policy

The Education Department has recently upgraded their online policies. We have sent have sent home permission slips to be signed. There are 2 letters and a form with tick boxes. The form contains exactly the same permission requests as the letters and is for our quick reference. If you give permission for your child to have an online account, they can use a computer at school. This includes doing their school work and saving their work on a computer or iPad. All the computers have internet connections and some programs we use are online eg Maths online. The other letter is requesting permission to publish your child’s image on Facebook or our website. We will not publish your child’s name. We are putting a link to our newsletter on our website. People need to click the link to open the newsletter. Until we get the upgraded permissions we will continue to use the information we have on file.

Workplace Learning- Mrs Wright

Congratulations to Joseph Rose for successfully obtaining at School Based Traineeship at Sizzler, Kelmscott.

I am really excited and happy that I got this traineeship.

I am a little nervous, but not a lot as I have done work experience there and know most of the staff and what tasks I have to do.
