Principal's Message

Dear Parents

I am extremely proud to be the principal at Punchbowl Public School and in the last couple of weeks I have been thoroughly impressed by the strength and resilience of the student, parent and community body in the wake of the devastating attack in New Zealand. I congratulate you all.

Did you know that our school has our very own YouTube channel? This week, we uploaded a new clip regarding Harmony Day and the celebrations that we undertook across the school. I know that this has been shared on Facebook already but please take another look when you have a moment. We had a week-long celebration with our students and in every classroom from preschool to year 6 there were beautiful artworks created that celebrated the rich and diverse community we live in. Have a look here and if you’re not a subscriber to our Facebook page, now is the time.

School Plan and Preschool Quality Improvement Plan

As a school we work with our community to constantly improve the educational outcomes of our children. The teachers are working very hard and are about to undertake a lot of professional learning in mathematics. We will be sharing more of our journey with you as the months pass but can I direct you please to two very important documents that guide all of the decisions we make as a school. Both of these documents have recently been updated for 2019 and are the 2018-2020 School Plan and the Preschool Quality Improvement Plan. Please take a look and if you have any suggestions please come and share them at the office.

Enrolments for 2020

Will your child be enrolling in our preschool in 2020? I know this may be a long way away but I encourage you to enrol your child as early as possible. I recently spoke with the P&C and we have changed the preschool enrolment procedure so that children who have siblings in our primary school are given priority over those attending other schools. Our preschool is very popular because it provides an excellent educational environment with amazing teachers and programs. Preschool enrolments for 2020 will open Day 1, Term 2 and if you would like a place for your child please reserve it by filling in an Application to enrol in a NSW Government preschool. The link will take you to the enrolment form which has been translated into 16 different languages or you can come to the office and collect one. Enrolments are open to all children who will turn 4 on or before 31 July 2020.  Sadly, we still have over 20 children on our preschool waiting list for 2019. I don’t want any family with children currently in our primary school to miss out so please don’t wait until it is too late. If you need help, please ask at the office.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

We are all concerned about the safety and wellbeing of your children. You may or may not know but whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW towards the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this increase will continue into 2019.School-aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people, who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies. What can you do to prevent whooping cough?

  • Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members.
  • Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough..
  • Keep coughing kids home, to prevent them spreading the infection to others, and see your GP to get them tested for whooping cough.
  • For more information on Whooping Cough and vaccination visit the NSW Health Website.

Until the next edition of Punchbowl Press, please continue to take good care of one another and stay safe, happy and healthy. We are here to help if we can so please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you need assistance of any kind.

    Preschool

Preschool have been busy learning about our preschool students and educator’s unique and wonderful cultural backgrounds. As part of this learning, pre-schoolers have been learning how to be kind and inclusive friends. The pre-schoolers enjoyed their Harmony Day celebrations and we were lucky enough to have some lovely parents visit to teach the children songs in their own home languages!

    Kindergarten

Students in Kindergarten are using different independent literacy activities to prepare them for reading and writing. We are learning to read and write sight words, recognise sound and letter relationships, and sort lower case and upper case letters.

    Stage 1

Stage 1 students attended the Start Smart incursion which allowed them to develop a deeper understanding of the Australian money system and how to use it. As part of this learning students were able to further develop their knowledge of number sense when solving real world problems.

    Stage 2

This term 3/4B are focusing their S.T.E.A.M unit on recycling. We are looking at the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. We have been exploring how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle materials around our classroom and school.

    Stage 3

Stage 3 has been busy learning about micro-organisms this term. Students were amazed at the tiny organisms they spotted under different microscopes! An important part of the unit has been learning about the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ micro-organisms that surround us and why they exist.

Lots of stage 3 students have been participating in PSSA trails for soccer, rugby and netball.

Mrs Youssef and some keen stage 3 debaters attended the Granville debating Gala day. Students learnt the skills required for debating and networked with students from other schools.

    Library

Many of our students have started this year’s Premier’s Reading Children (PRC). They are very keen to borrow books from the PRC Reading list and can’t wait to get their curious minds stuck into some of the exciting new titles we’ve purchased for our school library. More information about the requirements for the PRC is listed on the following website: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Parents, you can help your children build on their literacy skills by reading to them or listening to them read. The benefits of this exercise is enormous! As we approach the school holidays consider taking your children down to your local library to enjoy reading. Information about your local libraries can be found on the web link below:

    S.T.E.A.M Matters

It has been an exciting term with our Stage 2 and Stage 3 students immersing themselves into the world of Virtual Reality (VR).

Their initial reactions to the VR experiences were priceless! Students discussed and questioned what they saw and wondered about it all.

    How does it work?

    It looks so real!

Why is it that we seem to be in it?.

These were only a few of the questions our engaged students wanted to know.

    Community Language

We are very excited to start our community language program where students get to learn and practice their home language in class.  Kindergarten students are learning Arabic through ELLA program. ELLA is a digital, play-based language learning program for P-2 children. This Australian Government initiative inspires children by driving a genuine interest in a new language and culture. If I can also use this opportunity to remind parents in kindergarten who have not yet returned the ELLA permission notes yet to please hand it to your child’s teacher so that your child is registered on the App for assessment purposes. Should you require another note please ask your child’s classroom teacher.

Stage 1 are having fun learning through games and activities that they can do independently and are able to teach each other different sentences in different settings.

Stage 3 have also started by revising language through activities. However, they have now started to practice Arabic through the topic “Australia”, in which they learn mapping skills to talk about states and territories around Australia and where they are located in the North, South, East and West.

    شمال، جنوب، شرق، غرب

They will then explore the states and culture and will have a choice to exhibit what they’ve learnt through art or technology.

    Student Health

If  your child has a health condition which may require support at school or when involved in school activities, for example, a school excursion it is important that the school is aware and current plans completed by a medical professional are supplied to the school.  This includes all students with Asthma plans.

We want to work with you to keep your child healthy and safe at school.  If you have any questions please make an appointment to see Mrs Kontakos, Assistant Principal Learning and Wellbeing.
