Term 4 Week 3: 26th - 30th Oct 2020

Make My Day

Last week I had a number of students from 3T come to read me their poetry. The students have been working on similes, metaphors and rhyme. I was more than impressed with their creativity and the images created by their word choices. Well done 3T quite remarkable!

Footpath

I again thank Dave Reid and his Year 9 and 10 students Kai, Jett, Charlie, TJ, Lachlan, Sean, Ashton, Malachi, Dean, Jake, Zeek, Koby and Deegan for the work they are doing adjacent to our Administration building. They have widened the path and will be fencing it to match the carpark. We will be installing permanent hand sanitiser dispensers at the end of the path for student access.

Galgabba Public Speaking Competition

This year the Galgabba Public Speaking was completed by Zoom. Principal and executive representatives from the Galgabba Community of Schools judged various stage groups.

I’m very pleased to congratulate the 8 students who represented Caves Beach Public School and present these most impressive results.

Classes 2021

After receiving a number of late enrolments for Kindergarten 2021 I encourage our whole school community to remind any families who intend on enrolling at Caves Beach PS next year to submit enrolments as soon as possible. Our Kindergarten Orientations commence tomorrow and school staffing is directly determined by student numbers.

Playground

In the coming weeks, works will commence on the new playground equipment designed for our bottom play area. The equipment is designed for the older students and is more a fitness type circuit than purely play equipment. The image below is a fairly close representation of what will be installed. We are hoping it will be completed before the end of term.

Weekly Feature Class...3T

This term 3T have been learning about poetry. We have been studying ‘The Tin Forest’ and writing poems using figurative language and rhyme.

The mouldy rubbish lays for a million days.

The wind grumbled and the thunder rumbled.

The smell of the rubbish touched his nose,

It definitely did not smell like a rose.

The ground was as rough as a rock,

It was so tough that he had enough.

He dreamed of a life full of nature, beautiful and clean,

But all he had was disgusting rubbish that did not gleam.

By Ava P

The windows were dirty and foggy,

He could only see pipes and garbage that was soggy.

The bag of rubbish smelled like old food,

That put the old man into a bad mood.

He heard metal crashing,

And heard pipes bashing.

All the metal was bumpy,

And the pipes were lumpy.

He dreamed of a beautiful bird singing a song,

And dreams of the green forest he has wanted for so long.

By Uditi G

A long way from town lived a man with a frown.

He saw dusty metal and tin,

He thought that he should put it in the bin.

He smelt old mould and stinky rubbish,

He thought it was bad and that it needed to be punished.

He heard crinkle, crunkle, crash, the sound of unwanted trash.

He touched the tin and it smelt like a bin.

He felt it crack in his hand and it was that loud that it sounded like a band.

By Georgie F

All the things he saw were always forgotten,

He saw all the things that had gone rotten.

He smelt all the stuff that had all the rust,

And all around had musty old dust.

All the pipes got mashed and bashed,

All the rusty metal smashed and crashed.

All the things were never untwisted,

Whenever he tried his hands got terribly blistered.

He finally saw a bird,

The tweeting could be heard.

By Molly S

He was surrounded by dusty metal pipes,

Which were all different types.

The smell of mouldy food,

Put him in a very bad mood.

The sound of pouring rain,

Was like a hurricane.

The rusty metal was rough,

So he had had enough.

The tin forest was seen,

But not like it had been.

By Gabby U

Outside the door there was lots of rust,

Outside the window the air was full of dust.

All he could smell was disgusting busted trash,

The air was filled with dusty ash.

The only thing he could hear was tin clanging,

Then he heard a tin branch banging.

He felt metal that was bumpy,

And the ground was all lumpy.

He wished of a bird to sing,

He wished that the sun could bling.

By James C

The rusty old metal laid quietly on the floor,

As the little man stood quietly at the door,

He was in a bad mood,

He was hungry and wanted food.

He could hear the sound of smashing,

And the metal was crashing and bashing.

Looking outside he could see the metal turning all bumpy,

And the tin trees growing all lumpy.

Trees

Branches are as long as light poles and as rough as a gravel road.

Leaves as soft as dogs’ hair and as green as the grass.

Trucks as hard as metal and as brown as dirt.

Forests are as wet as water and as colourful as a rainbow.

Dreaming of a beautiful forest with healthy animals and green trees with clear water to swim in.

By Brae R

Trees

Branches wide and wobbling like a baby elephant walking for the first time.

Leaves swaying like a ballerina dancing.

Trunks browner than chocolate.

Forests as dark as shadows.

Dreaming of a secretive place to be alone. I hope that I will find this place one day.

By Jessie H

Trees

Branches reach to the sky like a road that never ends.

Leaves blow up into the air like her skirt blowing side to side.

Trunks are as bumpy as the road and sometimes smooth like a pool to swim in when no one is in the swimming pool.

Forests are as creepy like scary movies for adults.

Dreaming of a beautiful forest and imagining that it was wonderful.

By Jayla J

Trees

Branches fall off like a skeleton’s hand.

Leaves blow with the wind like a bird in a storm.

Trunks are as bumpy as rocks on the sea floor.

Forests as colourful as a rainbow lorikeet.

Dreaming of hearing the birds sing a song.

By Tahli J

Trees

Branches crashing, falling and textured like big winds blowing at an old house.

Leaves swirling, falling and floating like a ballerina’s dress swishing in the air.

Trunks stiff, hard and sharp like bricks glued together.

Forests crunchy, breezy and beautiful like a calm lake.

By Enakie

Trees

Branches shaking, crumbling and breaking like an old building.

Leaves shake, crumble and fall like a rock breaking off a cliff ledge.

Trunks small, skinny and smooth like a straw coming out of a milkshake.

Forests bright, green and grassy like a freshly mowed soccer field.

Dreaming of a giant rainforest to look out to from my window.

By Flynn K

Trees

Branches break, crack and fall like an old house.

Leaves wave, swirl and blow like a tissue in the wind.

Trunks are as thick as brick pillars holding up a house.

Forests crowded like a concert in Sydney.

Dreaming of the forest becoming a real forest full of animals and new life.

Online Enrolment System

We are excited to announce we are rolling out the new Online Enrolment System from today, Monday, 26 October 2020.

The Online Enrolment System is designed to provide flexibility for our parents to submit an enrolment application online and at the time that best suits you. The application can be accessed on all browsers and mobile devices including iOS and Android.

The online application process is currently restricted to:

  • Enrolments into local schools only
  • Children who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
  • Children who live in NSW.

We offer our support and encourage you to complete your application to enrol online. If, however, you do not feel comfortable completing an application online, a paper copy will be available for collection from the front office or can be downloaded from the Department’s going to a public school site.

Further information about online enrolment can be found on our website here.

2021 school travel applications are now open

Applications for student travel in 2021 opened on Monday 12 October 2020.

Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass for 2021 can now apply online. A new application should be submitted if a student is applying for a school travel pass for the first time or requesting an additional pass as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody).

Students who have changed school/campus, changed address, repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should re-apply or update their details.

Where there is a change of distance eligibility based on a student’s grade, the system will automatically update a student’s entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2020 to ensure that current student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card remains valid. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2020, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2021.

Canteen Chatter

WELCOME BACK TO OUR AWESOME VOLUNTEERS!

For the last 6 months, our canteen has been run by Jo and a very small team of helpers on Thursdays and Fridays – a huge thank you to Dea, Sonia, Helen, Paige, Trac and to Jo, for all your hard work in ensuring that our families have continued to have access to canteen lunches.

We are very excited to announce that, from Week 2, our fabulous roster of canteen helpers will return to school 4 days per week.  This means we can start to roll out or old menu to include more fresh food options and a greater variety for our kids to choose from.  We will also be reopening our canteen at lunchtime for students to purchase/collect tasty treats including icypoles, frozen treats and drinks.

We would prefer that these treats are ordered via the QKR app (to stay as cash free as possible) – and children can collect them after the first bell to enjoy during playtime, but cash sales will be available if needed.

ALL LUNCH ORDERS WILL STILL NEED TO BE PURCHASED VIA QKR ONLY.

The canteen will remain closed for recess at this stage.

If you have a free day per month & you’d like to be added to our roster of AWESOME canteen volunteers email us at cavescanteen@gmail.com

Volunteer Roster

Thank you to the fabulous volunteers who kindly donate their time. Without your help our canteen would not be able to operate !

If you would like to be added to the roster and a part of the fun, please call into the canteen and speak with Jo, or email us at cavescanteen@gmail.com
