Principal's Report

Dear Students and Parents,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you back to high school for another academic year. We hope that you had a restful and enjoyable summer break, and that you are eager to start the new school year with enthusiasm and determination.

We are excited to welcome both returning and new students to our school community. We are committed to providing you with a safe, inclusive, and challenging learning environment that fosters academic excellence, personal growth, and social responsibility.

Our faculty and staff have been working hard to prepare for the new school year and have implemented a variety of initiatives to support our students. These initiatives include new academic programs, extracurricular activities, and student support services.

As we continue to navigate the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to assure you that we are taking all necessary precautions to keep our students and staff safe. We are closely following the guidelines of our public health authorities and will adjust our plans as needed to ensure the health and wellbeing of our community.

We encourage our students to get involved in our school community, whether it be through joining a club, participating in a sports team, or volunteering for community service. We believe that these opportunities provide valuable learning experiences that complement the academic curriculum.

We are excited to begin this new academic year and look forward to working with our students and families to achieve success and excellence. We wish you all the best for a successful and fulfilling school year ahead.

We are starting the year with NAPLAN testing. All students in Years 7 and 9 who are enrolled at a NSW school are expected to participate in NAPLAN. The NAPLAN 2023 test window is nine days, from Wednesday 15th March to Monday 27th March.

As a school community, we value the relationship we have with our parents and carers. Together we will be better able to support the learning journey of our students. We welcome opportunities to partner with you and to discuss your child’s learning throughout the year and encourage you to contact your child’s teacher/s if you wish to discuss their progress and learning goals.

There are many ways that Beverly Hills Girls High School communicates and partners with our school community, including:

  • parent/teacher interviews, face-to-face or online
  • email updates
  • online platforms, such as Google Classroom, Facebook and Twitter
  • review meetings.

To answer questions or to discuss your child’s learning, please contact the school:

  • email beverlyhg-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au
  • phone 02 91504280

The NSW Department of Education has introduced a menstrual hygiene program in NSW public schools. This program aims to reduce any barriers that may prevent students from participating fully in school life.

As part of the program, our school has dispensers that provide free pads and tampons for students to access during school hours. The dispensers will be located in the PDHPE toilets.

Period underwear is also available.

Our school can also order period underwear at no cost for students. Students can access this product by going to the office.

Each pack of period undies contains 2 pairs that are the same size, colour and style. These are available upon request and there may be a short waiting period until the undies are delivered to our school.

Visit edu.nsw.link/MHP to find more information and to download a flyer about the program which is available in English and 10 other languages.

The new school mobile phone policy has successfully been implemented. Beverly Hills Girls High School is now a mobile free zone. All students must have phones ‘off and away’. I would like to thank all staff, students, and parents for their support in this initiative. We have already seen a more engaged learning community within our school.

Parents, please educate yourself with online safety and visit the following link for information on parental controls, cyberbullying and other technology concerns.

Our staff are working tirelessly on developing programs for the upcoming curriculum reform.

What is curriculum?

The curriculum is a plan for learning based on mandated and approved syllabus documents and current departmental policies and procedures.

The NSW curriculum refers to the suite of resources that are the syllabuses and the support resources to support teachers to implement the syllabuses. This includes, but is not limited to, resources including teaching and learning advice, assessment resources, and syllabus-specific materials including scope and sequences, units of work, standards materials and work samples.

What is curriculum reform?

The NSW Curriculum Reform aims to strengthen and streamline what is taught in schools. The curriculum reform is an opportunity to engage and reenergise what we teach and how we teach it. It focuses on making clear what is essential in the curriculum to give more time for deep learning, establish stronger foundations in English and mathematics, and provide stronger links between HSC subjects and career pathways.

Further information for schools can be located on the department’s NSW Curriculum Reform webpage. NESA  provides information that informs the community about the curriculum reform.

Covid - Smart Measures in Schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures will continue for Term 1, 2023. 🧼🏡 🧪 😷🌬️

Read our advice for families here: https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families

Cool for School

We are very excited to tell you that Beverly Hills Girls High School now has fully installed and operational Cooler Classrooms equipment.

Reverse-cycle air conditioning will now keep learning spaces comfortable during hot summers and chilly winters while fans and fresh air ventilation systems maintain healthy air quality.

To increase energy awareness and keep running costs low, smart outdoor weather monitors linked to interactive control systems are installed. These enable students and teachers to make energy efficient decisions to improve classroom comfort.

Solar panels will be installed to offset annual air conditioning energy usage costs and reduce environmental impact.

By creating healthy and comfortable learning environments at our school, our students can focus on what matters – learning.

There is no reason for students to be absent from school during hot days.

Maria Iemma

Principal

Working together for Student Attendance and to Maximise Learning

Dear parents and carers,

I want to thank you for your ongoing support in ensuring students can continue to enjoy face-to-face learning while we prioritise student and staff wellbeing through our COVID-smart measures.

We want to do all we can to be sure your child achieves their potential and enjoys being in school. One way we can help make this happen is to be sure your child attends school each day unless they are sick, have symptoms or are absent for a justified reason.

Protecting the wellbeing of our students through the reporting and monitoring of student absences is the responsibility of both parents/carers and schools. Notifying the school either before or on the day that your child is away helps us keep accurate student attendance records to support you and your child.

We know that school is the best place to learn and regular attendance means students can stay on top of their schoolwork and get the most out of their learning. If you are having trouble getting your child to school every day or on time, please talk to our school staff so we can work together, because every day counts.

Missing a day here or there may not seem like much but absences add up and can impact your child’s learning more than you think. When your child misses one day a week over a year, that’s 40 days of school, 8 weeks of lessons and 2.5 years over their school life lost. As your child’s education has already been interrupted through periods of learning from home due to COVID-19 over the last 2 and a half years, now is the time to prioritise face-to-face learning and making the most of every school day.

Our school strives for the expected attendance rate which is above 95% of students at school each day over the year.

If your child is unwell they will need to stay home, get tested for COVID-19 if they are experiencing symptoms and only return to school when symptom free.

Kind Regards

Ms. M Iemma

Deputy Principal's Report

This term, we will intensify our communications with individual families in support of our Every Day Counts campaign, focusing on school attendance. Families are expected to review their routines at home and make plans about how to ensure students are organised and ready to arrive at school BEFORE 8.20am. Students MUST attend school on time every day and be ready for learning. Our school day begins at 8.45am. The responsibility lies with the student and family to find solutions to ensure punctuality.

Students’ success at Beverly Hills Girls High is closely linked to attendance, involvement in a range of experiences that the school offers, as well as home study and revision. Many students have already signed up for various extracurricular activities across the school.

We welcome Year 12 back to school, this being their final year of schooling! Year 12 are currently being interviewed by the Deputy Principal, to plan strategies on how to maximise their full potential and learning. Students are encouraged to think about an ATAR that they would like to achieve and then, together, plan strategies to support this goal. The Wellbeing team is also supporting Year 12. They are busy planning study skills days revolving around time management, stress reduction and organisation to assist Yr12 in their goal setting. Further in the year, Year 12 students will be undertaking specific HSC study days to further assist them with their journey to the HSC.

Year 9 students are enjoying having a greater variety of subjects as they begin their elective courses. As the year progresses there will be increased opportunity for Year 9 students to take on some of the leadership roles in the school such as Peer Support training and Peer Mediator training. For Year 9, NAPLAN tests will take place during Week 8: 15- 21 March. This testing provides vital information for your child’s teachers so they can cater for individual student needs.

Deputy Principal's Report

This year, our focus in Teaching and Learning will continue to be directed by the school’s strategic plan. Literacy, Numeracy and the HSC will be our priorities across the school. Literacy and numeracy form the foundations students need for deep learning across the curriculum and the development of skills essential to everyday life. Since 2021, our school has focused on the five priorities for improving literacy and numeracy to ensure our students have access to the support they need to achieve their best. Based on strong evidence and research the five priorities identify the most important levers to improve student outcomes. The five priorities include a whole school approach to literacy and numeracy achievement from Year 7 to 12 with the school leadership focused on improving student literacy and numeracy. We plan to use data to inform literacy and numeracy improvement and ensure all teachers use effective practices to improve student literacy and numeracy outcomes through curriculum. In addition, we plan for families to be our partners in their children’s literacy and numeracy development.

In addressing this, the initiatives and programs planned for this year include:

LearNing Matters – Stages 4 & 5 LearNing Matters is a tailored program covering the focus skills of Numeracy, Reading and Writing, delivered via the small group format. The program is delivered in timetabled lessons on a rotational basis across 12 lines and staffed across KLAs.  Years 8 & 9 are involved in this program. A similar program will run in semester 2 for Years 7 and 10.

Quicksmart Program – Mr. A Sharma (Numeracy Coordinator). Quicksmart is a small group tuition program aimed at improving students’ outcomes in all areas in Numeracy. A selected group of Year 7 students will be tutored by trained teachers in this program twice a week for 30 weeks.

Leading LearNing in Reading, Writing and Numeracy. The teaching staff at BHGHS have committed to the plan to improve the foundation skills of our students. Linked with one of the 3 skills areas, each teacher has set a goal for improvement. The 3 teams will meet regularly throughout the year with the aim to participate in targeted Professional Learning, and work collaboratively on identifying ways to embed explicit instruction and practice of the focus skills into programs, assessments and lesson activities. Each of the 3 teams, reading, writing and numeracy, will have KLA representation ensuring that we all work together to maximise the impact on student learning.

STEAM course – As part of our High Potential and Gifted program, a team of teachers are working on developing a 100-hour STEAM based course in Stage 5. This course works across the whole curriculum addressing a diverse range of skills and knowledge. Students will complete 3 separate units delivered over 3 semesters with the final semester seeing the participants working on individual projects. We are looking forward to seeing what this great group of young women can achieve in semester 2.

Supporting student learning – Students can achieve high levels of success when they commit to their learning. This commitment doesn’t stop when students walk out of the classroom. Revision, study and practice all contribute to academic success. In addition to the work done in class the school has purchased access to several digital learning platforms which students can access at home. In Mathematics, Years 7 to 12 we have a range of resources including, Smarter Math's, Math's online and Edrolo. For students in stage 6, Edrolo and Atomi is available in selected subjects. These valuable learning platforms provide valuable practice and additional reading, and we encourage all students to log in, set up their account and use them regularly as part of their revision/study program.

NAPLAN 2023 - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is a nationwide measure through which parents/carers, teachers, and schools can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community. NAPLAN results allow parents/carers and educators to see how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy over time – individually, as part of their school community, and against national standards.  The NAPLAN tests are an online this year and will occur from Wednesday 15th March through to Tuesday 21st March. Students in Years 7 and 9 have already received information about this year’s tests and will participate in familiarisation workshops on Thursday 9th March (Year 7) and Friday 10th March (Year 9).

Year 8 Student Advisers Report

We would like to welcome all of Year 8, their parents and guardians back to an exciting new year at Beverly Hills Girls High School!

With the start of the new semester we want to encourage all of you to have conversations about your learning with your family and friends and to approach learning with confidence, setting new goals and having high expectations of yourselves. We also want to remind you that we will continue to support you in all the ways we can.

Moving forward, we want to encourage you to maintain your high standards of uniform. With the new uniform policy and greater consequences for being out of uniform we ask you stay informed of what you can and cannot wear. We also would like to bring to light the new phone policy which we hope will limit distraction and bring about more social interaction on the playground. Remember ‘Off & Away All Day!’

We would also like to reiterate that the first step to success in learning is attending as much as you can. We encourage a 90% attendance rate. If you are sick, make sure you get a green slip from the office and fill it in explaining any absence, but when you are well enough, you must be at school.

We look forward to a new school year which will be just as great as the last!

Year 9 Year Advisers Report

Welcome to 2023 Year 9 Parents/Carers and students.  Earlier this term we asked Year 9 students to advise which sporting activity they would like to play during lunch time.  Again, basketball was the winner by a tiny margin. Consequently, we will be holding a game later this term where students and Year Advisors will compete for bragging rights on the basketball court.

The 2023 quote for Year 9 is ‘Wait for a Hero? Or be your own hero?” This phrase represents what we see in all of our students, their ability to become global citizens, who can act to support and care for each other as well as young people who take responsibility for their learning to achieve anything they set their mind to.  They were asked to create a landscape banner that depicts their understanding of this phrase.  The poster is due to be submitted on google classroom by the 10th of March, with prizes being announced shortly!

We were also excited to announce that three of our students competed in and won the Riverwood Community Centre Youth Basketball tournament over the December school holidays. Congratulations to Sienna G (Year 9), Marwa C (Year 9) and Roukaya A (Year 8) for their wonderful achievement.

In addition, Battle of the Beats is will run in the coming school holidays (21st April). Any musical students are encouraged to compete and share their talents. We would like to wish any students planning on competing the best of luck! We look forward to hearing about your success.

Lastly, we’d like to mention that Year 9 will be taking part in NAPLAN this year. The date has changed and students will taking part in NAPLAN practice in Week 7 (9th March) and will start NAPLAN itself in Week 8 (15th March). We encourage all students to do their absolute best as it provides all teachers with important data to allow us to best support Year 9 in Reading, Writing and Numeracy.

We look forward to all the wonderful achievements of Year 9 and we excited to see our students reach their immense potential.

Year 10 Student Advisers Report

We welcome back Year 10 students to yet another productive and successful year. We encourage our students to continue taking a mature approach to their learning, with focus on grasping all opportunities available to them this year as we head into senior studies in 2024.

A number of Year 10 students started the year off by networking with our Year 7 students in the Peer Support Program. Year 10 have enjoyed meeting students and assisting them in their transition from primary to high school.

Additionally, 50 students have been given the opportunity to take part in the ‘Gateway Program’ and attend an on-campus experience at the University of New South Wales. This program will allow them to explore their strengths, passions and goals and consider their future ambitions.

Furthermore, all Year 10 students will attend a performance by ‘Brainstorm Productions’, ‘The Flipside’ which will address issues such as online safety, digital citizenship, bystander behaviour and online ethics. The performance will highlight the importance of personal responsibility, empathy, respect and values.

We continue to remind students to be respectful, responsible and resilient members of Beverly Hills Girls High School and we wish them all the best of luck this year.

Computing Technology 7 - 10 New Syllabus

The Technological and Applied Studies Faculty have been planning and preparing new units of work to accommodate the new Computing Technology Syllabus.

The new syllabus focuses on computational, design and systems thinking. It also develops data analysis and programming (coding) skills. The intention of the course is to develop our students’ capacity in these areas so that they can effectively contribute to an increasingly technology-focused world.

During their study our students will have opportunities to develop skills in analysing data, designing for user experience, connecting people and systems, developing websites and apps, building mechatronic systems, and creating simulations or games. They will use hardware and software to manage and secure data. They will also investigate the social, ethical and legal responsibilities of using data as creators of digital solutions while considering privacy and cybersecurity principles.

Our students will explore the impact of innovations in computing technology on society and the environment. They will develop skills using a range of hardware and software applications, including multimedia, digital media, virtual and augmented realities, gaming, graphical data and visualisations, networks and devices.

The TAS staff are looking forward to implementing the syllabus in 2024.

Year 11 Year Advisers Award

The students have had a great start to the year, embracing their new journey as seniors. So far this Term, Year 11 students have been guided by their teachers through the beginning of the Preliminary course, building a strong foundation to take them through.

The school has invested in MyStrengths workshop across all year groups, with Year 11 being the first group to participate. This workshop was held on Thursday 23rd February where students were led through the MyStrengths online survey. Students then worked through a range of activities including teacher-led workshops to understand their strengths, work in teams on problem solving activities and learn about strategies to support their success in Senior School. By going through this process, our students have developed a better understanding of how their strengths inform identity, self-esteem and future choices.

Already, a few Hospitality students have participated in a Barista course and gained additional qualifications with this accredited training which will undoubtedly benefit them in the future.

Coming up this term, Year 11 students who study Entertainment will be completing their mandatory White Card Training on March 16th.

We encourage you all to stay focused, continue working hard and use your strengths at every opportunity.

Year 11 Highlights

Welcome Year 12 2023!

You are in the final year of your High School life! Hope you had an enjoyable and restful holiday and are now ready to take on the next 3 terms to knuckle down and work hard to achieve your best.

We have hit the ground running with attending University of Wollongong Open Day which was extremely informative and inspiring about where some of you are headed. The day was filled with many workshops which gave you a glimpse into University life. There will be plenty of other opportunities for students to attend other Universities regarding their future studies too!

Committees started working hard taking on their duties. The Fundraising committee successfully organised their first event which was, Valentine’s Day on February 14th. This included students selling raffle tickets to teachers, SASS staff and students of BHGHS. The first prize was 2 movie tickets to GU Filmhouse Event Cinemas in Beverly Hills, which were kindly donated to us. We greatly appreciate their support and generosity in helping our Year 12s with their fundraising. The second prize was a $30 gift voucher. Congratulations to the 2 winners and thank you to everyone that supported Year 12.

Learning and Support Officers, Laura Turner and Monique Van De Pol are currently organising a program that will support our Year 12s with their academic and wellbeing needs. This is a great initiative that hopefully will be utilised by our Year 12 students and show an improvement in their confidence and academic abilities.

On a serious note, there is an assessment block that is taking place at the end of this term. This will require students to revisit their Assessment Policy and Assessment Summary documents which can be located on their Google Classroom. Now is the time to focus on your studies, revise your study notes, ask teachers for help/advice when needed and always try your personal best!

Good luck and remember Mrs. Papas and Ms. Petkovska are always here for you.

Work Experience Year 10 2023

In 2023, Year 10 students will have the opportunity to participate in one/two week(s) of Work ExperienceThis program is a part of secondary schooling and integral to the Career Education Program at this school.  The aim of the program is for students to gain first-hand experience in a work situation and develop an understanding of the process involved in choosing a career.

We would appreciate your assistance in encouraging your daughter to participate in this worthwhile program. Students who leave work experience organisation to the last minute, often miss out of their desired career choice. All placements and paperwork for Work Experience are to be finalised 3 weeks before the date of any work experience.

The following weeks have been set aside for any student wishing to do work experience, this year dates will be flexible, and students can negotiate with the Careers Adviser and their teacher to go on work experience for the week.  If these dates are not suitable with employers, students can discuss this with the Careers Adviser.

UOW Discovery Day

The possibilities are endless…

Selected students from the Class of 2023 had an eye opening experience, with the opportunity to attend lectures in subjects of their choice at the University of Wollongong.

The experience of University life proved to be beneficial to all students who attended, most importantly focusing on the lectures attended, and provided insight into their future of study.

University life is incomplete without the community experiences it offers, and so students were able to have a holistic experience of university life, immersing in the diversity and social aspects, meeting many new people.

Overall, a day of learning, exploring and stepping out of their comfort zone enabled the students to be another step closer to be able to make informed decisions about their future.

“My time at the University of Wollongong was incredible; not only did I make excellent new friends from other schools, but my desire to go to university also grew. Despite not always being together, me and the other girls were still able to enjoy every lecture and class because of how simple it was to communicate with the other students. My favourite lessons were the lecture-based ones since they were so engaging and kept me from getting distracted. Overall, my time at the University of Wollongong was incredible, and if I had the chance to go back, I would without a doubt.”

Message from the Wellbeing Team

We are really excited to welcome our students back this term, particularly our Year 7 cohort. Year 7 students have been able to connect with their peers and teachers during transition and Peer Support, led by a fantastic team of Year 10 leaders. We are super proud of our Year 7s with a number of them making return visits to their primary schools to share their experiences of the first weeks of high school. In a few short weeks they have matured and grown, looking incredibly smart in their BHGHS uniforms and speaking with confidence about their transition to high school.

The Wellbeing Team – who we are & what we do!

The Student Advisors are the first point of contact for parents and students who have any questions, concerns or wish to share information that help us support student learning and wellbeing. Each year group has two Student Advisors who are dedicated to supporting students, journeying side by side with them throughout their high school experiences. We also have two Student Support Officers who are able to provide additional wellbeing support to students, including links to external services.

Rockford Angelik Danieles            4th in State in HSC Filipino Continuers

Kanaya Ahmad                                  2nd in State in HSC Korean Continuers

Khanh Linh Nguyen                         5th in State in HSC Vietnamese Continuers

Did you know ….

that at BHGHS, we support students in their study of languages that we are unable to provide at our school?

We currently have Year 11 and 12 students enrolled in Korean, Filipino, Chinese and French. These languages are studied at Saturday School of Community Languages and NSW School of Languages.

Year 8-10 Chinese Excursion

Year 8-10 Chinese Language students and Ms. Si explored Chinese culture during an excursion in Term 4 last year. Following a study in class of artist Jasper Knight, students continued their study with a visit to China Cultural Centre in Sydney where they presented their research to their peers and explored his artwork. They then enjoyed Chinese noodles for lunch and a spot of shopping in China Town. For many students, this was the first time they have been to China Town and eaten Chinese food. They loved it so much that they took some noodles home for their families to taste!

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

What is VET?

Vocational Education and Training (VET) provides people with the workplace skills and technical knowledge they need to meet current and future employment demands. Put simply, VET is skill-based education and training.

For NSW school students, VET is ‘dual accredited’. Students receive recognition towards their school qualification (Record of School Achievement or HSC), as well as a nationally recognised VET qualification.

Courses within Industry Curriculum Frameworks (Frameworks) count as Board Developed unit credit for the HSC. Frameworks include an optional HSC examination, which provides the opportunity for students to have this HSC examination mark contribute to the calculation of their ATAR.

At Beverly Hills Girls, we are fortunate enough to have skilled teachers with qualifications which allow us to offer VET courses studied at our school. The VET courses we offer are;

Business Services, Entertainment Industry, Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) and Information & Digital Technology.

Workplacement

As part of a VET course, students gain workplace experience with 35 hours of workplacement in Year 11 and Year 12. This is a mandatory NESA requirement for all students studying a VET course.

Some of our Year 12 students are currently attending their workplacements and are having a valuable experience. Congratulations to these students for reinforcing our great reputation in the community and making us proud.

Most importantly…

Congratulations to the following VET students for their successes in 2022;

Sarah Maikari                     1st in State in HSC Business Services

Amar El Milaki                   nominated by her work placement employer for Award of Work Placement Student of the Year for her work placement undertaken during 2022 when she was in Year 11 for VET studies in Business Services. The nomination came from an employer impressed with Amar’s overall commitment and involvement during the work placement.

Library News

Library activities are in full swing this term. We welcomed a team of new and experienced library monitors in our first meeting which was held in week 3. A big congratulations to Nesrine Ghezzaoui who received her Senior Monitor badge. We thank her for her dedication and hard work in the library.

Nesrine and Ms Mckee did a fantastic job setting up the interactive “Love the Library” display where students were invited to write a message highlighting what they love about the library. The library staff will be working with the monitors and SRC on some exciting displays for International Women’s day on the 8th of March. Later that month, we will be hosting an exhibition of Harmony Day posters created by students.

There are a number of exciting lunch time activities coming up in the library. One library monitors have been instrumental in overseeing the beginning of Crochet Club that will be starting soon at lunchtime on Tuesdays. During lunch on Fridays our student support officer will also be running origami and jewellery making workshops. Anyone who is interested is invited to come along - no previous experience is required.

In reading news, the premiers reading challenge will be open from the 27th of February until the 18th of August. All students are encouraged to participate in the challenge and can log on using their DOE accounts. The challenge is not a competition but rather a challenge to encourage students to read more and read more widely. Students need to read at least 10 books from the PRC list and 10 books can be their own personal choice. Students and parents/carers can visit the Premier’s Reading Challenge website or see library staff for more information.
