Respect, Responsibility, Safety

Principal's Message

We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our newly elected School Captains Liana Smithson and Andy Dodds with Vice Captains Jeane Van Der Merwe and Harry Bottero.
Student leadership is an important part of schools and will often be displayed in so many different ways. We believe the students elected for our 2021 Leadership team have shown throughout their time at school, they are worthy of these leadership roles.
We look forward to seeing them conducting their ceremonial duties as well as welcoming their role in shaping 'the student voice' as we continue the discussions around the evolution of student leadership into the future.

Tips for our Senior Students

Years 11 and 12 can be stressful, and the situation with COVID-19  has only added to the uncertainty and challenges of senior studies. It is important to have some strategies to manage emotions to re-focus our thinking and look after ourselves.

Please read the attached for great tips on how to deal with changes and challenges.

Positive Behaviour for Learning - PBL at THS

This term so far we have focused on our PBL value of Respect with mini lessons held to reinforce the expected behaviour for each value. Students who demonstrated this behaviour were given an extended recess. We would like to encourage our families to use the PBL language at home with their children.

Lesson 1. Be polite - It is socially acceptable and expected to be polite. Being polite will help students gain employment and improve personal relationships. Using positive language and listening to others speak are good ways to show politeness.

Lesson 2. Follow instructions - It is socially acceptable and expected to follow instructions. Following instructions will help students maintain employment and assist with maintaining structure and order in our society. Accepting authority and the law in all situations are good ways to follow instructions.

Lesson 3. Be tolerant - It is our social responsibility to create social harmony and a sense of belonging by being tolerant. Accepting differences in race, religion and gender for example will help everyone understand that differences in people enrich our lives. Including others in friendship groups and community events are good ways to be tolerant.

BYOD - Bring your own device

Remote Learning has undoubtedly changed the Educational Landscape. At THS several staff were already using Google Classroom (GC) before COVID19, but since the disruptions the use of programs such as Google Classrooms are becoming central to how teachers and students can connect in ways previously not experienced.

Early this year the school began to more enthusiastically push the 'Bring Your Own Device Policy' (BYOD). We believe technology can now be better blended into existing classroom practices and the use of a BYOD is now even more relevant to a students education. In this context, we are providing a 'BYOD Specs information sheet' which outlines what is required for those students who will want to bring their own device to school. Please note Google Classroom will also be able to be accessed on a Smart Phone and the school will have 'some' devices available at school for student use.

Hopefully this information proves useful to parents/carers as we approach the summer holidays. Additionally, we have contacted Tumut's local Harvey Norman store and hope to develop a relationship as we navigate this technological landscape.

Resource Centre News

Reading for pleasure is an important life skill. It helps to lower stress levels, improve literacy, empathy and attention span. With the increase of time spent on devices, reading for pleasure can help to reset the tendency for skimming and scanning of information to encourage deep thinking and prolonged concentration.

Our Resource Centre is regularly receiving new books and a lot of them have been requested by our students.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Book Collection

Jayda from Year 7, is all smiles borrowing the new book "Top End Girl" from the Resource Centre. Jayda saw this book listed on our Oliver Library Management system and patiently waited for it to be covered and ready for borrowing.

We have lots of new books in the Resource Centre that are being introduced to our students during NAIDOC Week and are on display opposite the Circulation Desk.

Student Activities and Student Success

Micalong Swamp Field Trip

On Monday, 19th October seven Indigenous students participated in a research trip to Micalong Swamp. The weather was perfect to be up in the surrounding high country of Tumut. Students were engaged in a hands-on tadpole and frog identification activity with Threatened Species expert David Hunter. It was great to see students walking around the swamp (some with soaked shoes) picking up tadpoles and frogs with smiles on their faces. David spoke to the students about the critically endangered Corroboree Frog and the threats to the declining population.

The trip was a part of a wider research project being partly facilitated by Sue Bulger, CEO of the Brungle Tumut Local Aboriginal Lands Council and University of Wollongong academics. They are researching how connection to culture can support resilient communities and would like to work with Tumut’s community to reinvigorate the cultural stories of Corroboree Frog and restore core Aboriginal cultural values. Petaurus Education Group from Albury and Shane and Talea from National Parks and Wildlife Service attended and helped with the day. This research trip presented a great opportunity for students and external members to come along and gain wonderful and diverse experiences from it.

To obtain a white card, you must attend the course with an accredited Registered Training Organisation. During the white card training,  students learnt construction site safety practices, how to keep a safe environment, and proper measures to take in case accidents happen.

Congratulations to the 18 students who completed this course during the term at THS and thank you to Careers Adviser Mrs Stroud for organising.

There are 16 students from Year 10 and 2 student from Year 9  who are participating in the YES (Youth Engagement Strategy) Program at TAFE this term. Students will be attending either Childcare Skills,  Welding  or Beauty classes over 4 weeks to get a taste of TAFE and get an insight into the industry.

Year 7/8 Premiers Debating Challenge

Our Year 7/8 debating team are still smiling having lost their debate against Kempsey High School arguing the negative "That school canteens should only sell Australian products.". Coach Mr V said the girls were professional and raised some good points. Congratulations to the girls Allie, Jemma, Marianna and Brooke for being Zone Champions and being so enthusiastic in their first State level debate.

Year 9 Music

Year 9 music students worked in small groups improvising Film Music to produce tension. They included techniques they discovered from listening to contemporary film and game themes.

Year 9/10 Debating

Another debating victory for THS with Year 9/10 students debating against Batlow Technology School in a local competition. Topic was "That we should ban TV shows that glorify crime". We were the negative side with Keely Wickman and Eddie Dodds bringing their experience to the team to help mentor Noah Parker and Atticus Blenkins and further develop their debating skills. Both teams found the topic somewhat challenging, but we were able to argue that banning the shows would not solve the problem. Thanks to Megan for chairing and timekeeping the debate. Coach Mr V is organising another debate against Batlow in the upcoming weeks. Well done team.

Year 9/10 Premier's Debating Challenge

Congratulations to our Year 9/10 debating team who had a victory in Round 3 of the Premier's Debating Challenge against Blakehurst High School. It was a really difficult topic related to politics -"That the Federal Government should have a Minister for Youth." We were affirmative. The team performed their best in this debate. Coach Mr V was very impressed with their model. The team argued how it would give young people a sense of having a voice in the political realm. Well done Abbey, Megan, Eddie, Daniel and Mr V.

That is 3 from 3 for this team with more debating to come.

Year 11 Drama

Our Year 11 Drama students had a taste of Year 12 course work via zoom as they participated in a drama seminar with Illuminate Educate. Students explored one of their HSC texts and had a great time. A big thank you to Miss Sutherland for organising such a fantastic seminar.
