Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM ONE WEEK TWO

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

Welcome to the 2023 school year. It has been a great start and wonderful to welcome students back after the long summer break. I know there were many happy parents on Tuesday morning as children across the state returned to school.

It was great to return last week and see the removal of scaffolding as the roofing project was completed. The new slate roof is certainly impressive and importantly will put an end to the leaks we have experienced over many years. There are however two exclusion zones in place (see the blue fencing) as heritage sandstone experts carry out essential repairs to the main building. It is expected to take a number of weeks before these fences are removed.

Yesterday, our classes for 2023 were formed and students should have come home with news of their new teacher and classmates. The announcement and formation of classes is generally an exciting time for students. However, for some it is a time of uncertainty. Parents can be assured that a great deal of time and careful consideration goes into creating classes. Every effort is made to ensure students are well placed to meet their academic and social needs. If your child is feeling a little uncertain about their new class, these feelings will generally fade as they make connections with their teacher and new classmates. If your child’s anxiety continues past the first few weeks, you might consider sending your child’s teacher an email. Together you may be able to figure out why your child is struggling and provide the support they need.

2023 Staffing & Class Names

At Rozelle we have a wonderful team of dedicated staff and this year 22 classes were formed. Please see below an overview of our classes and additional programs including: music, art and support for all learners.

This year, our class names have been inspired by Australian artists which I am sure will lead to many creative artworks throughout the school. What a wonderful theme for 2023!

Start of Day & End of Day Procedures

At 8.30am students can arrive at school where a member of the executive team will be on playground duty. They can enter via the Darling Street playground, the Merton Street or council carpark gates. All students are supervised on the asphalt. At 9am, the school day starts and students will line up before moving into classes.

Students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am unless they are attending before school care OSH Club or involved in an extracurricular activity eg band or choir.

At the end of the day, our 3-6 students are dismissed from their classrooms. Students will then meet adults in the playground, walk home or go to OSH Club. Please have a conversation with your child about your expectations for them when they are dismissed from school at 3pm.

Our K-2 students will walk into the playground and be dismissed by a member of staff - generally their class teacher. Each class will have a designated meeting spot in the back playground. The gates are opened at 2.45pm each day for access into the playground. If arrangements change it is important that this information is shared with your child’s teacher.

The Maintenance Continues...

As families may have noticed, there are two blue fenced exclusion zones that have been erected. These may be in place for sometime as essential repairs are made to the sandstone. The exclusion zones have been created as a precautionary measure.

Today our external toilets were closed as a result of a leaking water pipe located underneath the tiled floor of the boys toilet. Although it was a significant leak, the toilets were only out of action for a day.

Finally… work continues on the resurfacing of the school’s basketball court and if this run of fine weather continues, it should be operational in the next fortnight. Keep your fingers crossed!

School Contributions for 2023

Each year we invite parents to contribute to a range of programs and initiatives that enrich student learning. Annual contributions, supplement the funds provided by The Department of Education and allow us to provide additional high-quality resources and programs that further support teaching and learning across the school. These include:

  • Software licences for digital resources used with the Interactive panels and for work in class and at home eg. Mathletics, Reading Eggs, Soundwaves.

  • Digital technology resources such as Chromebooks, iPads and apps.

  • Additional library books and reference materials for each classroom.

  • Additional equipment to support teaching and learning in science, mathematics, sport, music, art and craft.

At Rozelle we are fortunate to have a team of specialist teachers who provide exceptional programs to compliment learning in the classroom. Ms Alison Cole is the Art teacher and this year will be working with all of the students from Kindergarten to Year 6 for a semester each. This is particularly exciting for the Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students who have not previously experienced the magic of Ms Cole. Ms Jen Maclauglin is our Music teacher and she will also be providing music lessons for all students for one semester throughout the year. Both Ms Mac and Ms Cole are accomplished artists in their own right and we are so lucky to have them on our team. Students will have a session each week in the library with Ms Sheppard who addresses the general capabilities of the NSW syllabus and the Literacy component focusing on critical thinking and technology as well as literacy. In 2023, we added Ms Tohver to the specialists team. She will be working in our newly dedicated creative minds space - Bangawarra (a Gadigal word - meaning to make or create) and will teach all of the students for one session each week. Students will be developing their critical and creative thinking skills and capabilities in each of these exciting and engaging specialist programs. To help cover the cost of these four creative programs, we are asking parents to contribute $100 per child each semester (terms 1 & 2). This will appear on your invoice.  There will also be a one off payment of $70 per child for 2023 for Learning Resources.

Online payment method is preferred and can be made via the school website - Make a Payment tab. Cash payments should be brought directly to the school office, while cheques should be made payable to Rozelle Public School. Alternatively families may choose to wait until the first invoice is sent via email. Please contact Mr Braiding if you ever need to discuss difficulties with payment.

All orders are made on-line through the Spriggy Schools app and delivered to the school in time for students to enjoy at lunchtime and recess. Orders need to be placed by 7:30am on the day or can be placed weekly in advance. Families will need to download the Spriggy Schools app and create a profile for their child. If you need assistance visit spriggyschools.com.au

The School Canteen will be closed on Tuesday 14 February due to the swimming carnival.

    Nut Aware

A number of students at Rozelle have been diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to nuts. While it is not advised for the school to declare itself “nut-free” we are definitely a “nut-aware” school. This means that we ask parents/carers to carefully consider the food they provide for their child and avoid foods that contain nuts. Before sending in food for special occasions for your child’s class, please check with the teacher. The school appreciates everyone’s effort in keeping all our students safe and supporting their families to manage this difficult situation.

    Morning Drop Off

Families are reminded that students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am unless they are attending OSH Club or a before school activity such as band rehearsal. There may be occasions where you need to drop your child off 10 minutes earlier. In these instances, students must go to the middle playground, where they sit and wait for teacher supervision to begin.

    Lost Property

When parents are up at the school they may have seen the lost property trolley which is wheeled regularly into the Darling Street playground. Should your child misplace a hat, jumper, water bottle or lunchbox…you may find it in the trolley.
