St Mary's Newsletter

Term 3 - Week 4 ( 14 August, 2020)

Principal's Message

Dear St Mary's School Community

Matthew 15: 21-28

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus meets the Canaanite woman.  The woman believed in Jesus and would not give up even when Jesus tried to turn her away.  Her faith was persistent.  Many people lose faith in God when things go badly in their life.  Sometimes they even blame him.  Jesus does not promise that we will never suffer if we believe in him, only that we will never suffer alone.  He promises to walk beside us even in our darkest hour.

Feast of the Assumption

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  As Catholics we believe that when Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ died, her body was not subjected to the usual process of physical decay but was “assumed” into heaven and reunited there with her soul. This is a holy day of obligation – meaning that Catholics should attend Mass.  Fr Andrew will be celebrating Mass at 8.00am on Saturday morning.  This is aside from the normal weekend Masses.

Cybersafety Workshop

The feedback in regard to the Surf Safe Online presentation by Paul Litherland by the students, staff and parents has been overwhelmingly positive.  I know that everybody learnt something new (myself included) and while some of the information was confronting it was also thought provoking.  Paul has sent through two of his newsletters which are attached to this newsletter for your information.  You may want to consider subscribing to them. Thank you once again to the P&F for co-funding and supporting the presentation.

P & F Raffle

Thank you to those families that have purchased tickets or taken books to sell for the P&F raffle.  There are no books left to sell and only individual tickets left to purchase at the office.   Thank you to Mark and Chesney Maloney from Two Dogs Hardware Merredin for generously donating the 2nd, 3rd and 4th prizes. First prize is an iPad. The raffle will be drawn at the assembly at the end of the term and money raised will go towards projects at St Mary’s School such as the nature playground and music resources.  Thank you once again to the P&F for organising the raffle.

Nature Playground

The Extension group with Mrs Millington has been planning a nature playground to go in the area behind the sheds. The plans are slowly coming to fruition – so watch that space to see it all unfold. Thank you to Scott Wilson, Brad Atkinson and Dave's Tree Service for their help so far!  And congratulations to Mrs Millington for securing a grant from Nutrien which will go towards greenery for the space.  This project is very much an example of learning in action!

Wellbeing Week

Next week is Wellbeing Week at St Mary’s School.  Given the events of this year – it is important for us to focus on wellbeing and mental health of not only the students but ourselves.  Use the extra time without homework to do something as a family.

Assembly

All families are invited to join us for our first assembly for 2020 next Friday, 21 August 2020 at 8.50am.  Spaced seating in keeping with social distancing requirements will be placed on the lawn and outside the Library/Year Two/Year Three.

Book Week 2020

I have had a number of enquiries about Book Week 2020 – it is anticipated that this will go ahead in Week Nine at St Mary’s School.  Due to COVID19, the CBCA has moved Book Week to Term Four but due to the busyness of Term Four for our school – we will be holding it in Term Three.  The theme for this year is:  ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’.

God Bless and have a lovely weekend with your families,

Ms Adriana Coniglio

Principal

Year One Class News

This term in Year One, students have been learning how to measure different items using uniform everyday objects. We have been using counters, cubes and dominoes. When measuring, we need to remember to use uniform objects, and measure in a straight line with no gaps or overlapping.

We enjoyed tree planting with Mrs McDonald and the Year 6 students.

Have a look at our amazing Mary MacKillop portraits!

Year Three RE Corner

Performing Arts

In Term Three we make the move to incorporate more movement and dance into our lessons. This move sets us up for Term Four where we start to rehearse for the End of Year concert.

Whilst we still have a Drama focus we will be covering some of the Dance outcomes as well.

PP – Year 2

We are focusing on animals;

How they sound?   How they move?   What they do during the day?   How they interact with each other?

We have used music, movement and sound to create some interesting performances to share with each other.

We will continue to develop these skills throughout the term, eventually creating some mini dance spectaculars to share via Seesaw.

Year 3-Year 6

Our focus this term has been on Super Heroes. We have been discussing familiar characters and what makes them super. We have also been exploring Silly Super Heroes, where the children choose a hero with a certain silly characteristic and design a performance with a peer.

In the coming weeks we are moving onto Villains and how they would be different to Super Heroes.

More movement and music will be present in the latter part of the term.
