Principal`s Report

Good afternoon and with many items already completed this term, we have some very exciting and community oriented activities coming up.

I would like to thank Mrs Vicki Arnot for taking the principals chair while I was on leave and doing a fantastic job in my absence. She completed her normal tasks along with anything else that came across her desk and I thank her for this.

Recently some classrooms received new interactive panels from Electroboard and they have been a terrific addition to each classroom allowing for more interactive use with students and teachers. Plans are underway to purchase more for the remaining classes for 2020.

Careers Day

Next week we will be welcoming guests from many vocations for our annual Careers Day. In attendance we will have: Police, St John NSW, NBN, Wyong High Ag Department, Musician, Bunnings, Dancer, Brian Hilton Motors, Martial Arts Instructor, Dental Nurse, Builder, Nutrition Scientist and many more! We thank our guests for giving up their mornings to talk to the students about what is involved in their training and careers. Families are welcome to attend what will no doubt be a very fun morning.

Life Education

We had the pleasure of having life education classes over the last week for all students.

Our students had the opportunity to be involved in lessons that involved making good choices in healthy eating and respectful relationships.

The lessons are always hands on and interactive for the children and all children were subsidised by the school.

Life education is held at Wyong every two years.

Kerri Beavan Commitment to Reading Awards

Earlier this year our school community sadly lost our beloved lollipop lady, Kerri Beavan, who was also a volunteer at the school for 20 years. Kerri helped in many different areas but her passion was for books and she felt strongly about encouraging children to read and giving every child access to books. With this in mind, Wyong Public School and its P&C have created the ‘Kerri Beavan Commitment to Reading’ awards. These awards, generously sponsored by the P&C, will be presented each year during Book Week to one student from each stage who has shown their commitment to reading either by their love of and passion for reading or by their commitment to improvement in reading. We are sure Kerri would be proud to have her name on this award and we thank her family for their support in this.

When we held our annual Book Character Parade during our recent Book Week, we were honoured to have Kerri's daughters, Kayla and Brianna, attend to present the awards alongside Mrs Pass and Mrs Adams. Our wonderful book loving winners were Aliyah, Cameron, Rjay, Koryn and Joel. Congratulations kids!

Scholastic Book Fair

Thank you to our families who came and either had a browse through our Scholastic Book Fair or who purchased from our fair. Every item purchased helped our school gain reward points to put towards purchasing books for the iCentre. A big thank you also to those families who also donated books from the fair to our school library.

Thank you to Jes Kroemer, our LAST teachers, Jacqui Boyd and Sonya Cheng, students from our iSupport team  and Mrs Robertson for helping run our 2019 Scholastic Book Fair. It was a very busy 2 weeks but the quantity of books we were able to gain from the fair for our students to read and borrow made it all worth it!

CBCA - Author Luncheon

The iSupport team had a wonderful day at Breakers Country Club listening to some very inspiring authors and illustrators. I think some of our students were a little bit star struck when they met Yvette Poshoglian the author of the Ella and Olivia series.

String Players Perform at the Sydney Opera House

Congratulations to our violin and cello players on their recent performance at the Sydney Opera House. The string students performed as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music and joined instrumentalists all corners of New South Wales and showcased what public education has to offer. Our students have been working towards this performance all year and have attended numerous rehearsals leading up to it. They performed four musical works on the stage and did us proud. Bravo to our string players! Your hard work paid off.

Central Coast Public Speaking Competition Wyong Zone Final

Wyong Public School was given the opportunity to host the Wyong Zone finals in public speaking this year. Six schools attended on the day with students from Kindergarten to Year 6 from Kulnura, The Entrance, Berkeley Vale, Chittaway, Central Mangrove and of course Wyong. The students presented a speech and adjudicators had the difficult decision on deciding the top 2 finalists to represent our zone in each stage.

Congratulations must go to all the students who reached the Wyong Zone Final of the Central Coast Public Speaking Competition this term. The prepared speeches were all of such a high standard this year, that it was difficult to separate the top speakers.

Wyong finalists were: Faith, Cobyn, Ellise, Thomas,Violet, Remy, Zoe and Abby (unfortunately sick on the day)

All these students should be congratulated for their hard work in the competition. It was a pleasure to listen to such wonderful speakers.

Wyong competed well on the day and Faith and Remy went on to represent Wyong Public School at the Central Coast Final at Warnervale Public School last Thursday. This final had the best 2 finalists from each stage from each zone competition. Well done girls on your achievement.

Congratulations once again to all the students who participated in the competition. I’d like to thank Mrs Shelley for her wonderful assistance in the competition, as well as the Stage 3 helpers Aleeyah, Mackenzie, Erin, Eva, Gaby, Austen and Dakoda for being such terrific hosts and time keepers. These students were a credit to Wyong Public School. Our adjudicators from Wyong High School Mrs Kylie Sutherland, Molly and Elisha did a tremendous job on the day as well and were instrumental in the success of the competition.

 Thanking you

Mrs Jo Freers

First Lego League - Robotics Teams

I am very excited to announce that we were successful in receiving a grant from First Australia and Google Australia to support one of our senior First Lego League robotics teams. They have provided us with a new EV3 robotics kit, game board and we will also receive FLL mentorship.

The season has kicked off for 2019 and the junior and senior teams have already begun project planning and building their Lego models. With many senior FLL students having competed last year at Gosford High’s FLL competition, they have started formulating their game plans for possible missions to complete.

We have been doing some remodelling in the iCentre and have extended the robotics room, to accommodate more space for creativity and innovation, a space for teachers to conduct curriculum planning and students to explore project based learning. Watch this space for the completed space pictures!

Stage 3 Spelling Bee

A special congratulations to Gabriel & Kale who will be representing WPS at Warnervale Public School on the 10th September. We wish them the best of luck and recognise the efforts of all students involved in the 2019 Premiers Spelling bee.

Girls Rugby League Gala Day

On Wednesday the 14th of August, twelve girls from Stage 3 participated in the Girls All Schools 2018 Isabelle Kelly Cup at Berkeley Vale.

They girls were able to enjoy a sport that they have often watched but have not had the chance to play. They played with great sportsmanship, determination and their skill improved as the day went on. There were some great tries and some very impressive tackles.

The girls got to meet Isabelle Kelly and get their footballs and footy boots signed. Isabelle Kelly plays for the Sydney Roosters in the NRL Women’s Premiership.

Well done girls on a successful day! It is a tough game and you should all be extremely proud of your efforts.

Thank you to the parents who took the time to transport their children and others to and from the venue.

Bottle Top Update

Our first collection of bottle tops is ready to send to Envision Hands We have collected well over 10,000 bottle tops which is enough to make at least 20 prosthetic hands for children. This is an incredible effort in such a short time and everyone who has helped collect can feel proud that we are helping children in need, as well as saving plastic from landfill. Thank you to all students involved in helping sort the bottle tops.We will continue collecting so keep up the great work! A reminder that all bottle tops must be washed and dried before handing them in.Well done WPS

REQUEST FOR ALL SCHOOL MAINTENANCE LOCAL TRADES PROVIDERS AND SUPPLIERS

The NSW Government has committed the largest investment in planned maintenance at public schools in the history of NSW.  A record $1.3 billion is being spent on an ambitious delivery program, focused on employing local businesses and contractors across the state.

To assist in addressing regional school maintenance issues and at the same time provide work for local trade’s persons and suppliers across the Hunter / Central Coast regions, over $100 million is being invested to upgrade and maintain our school infrastructure.

Given this record spend by School Infrastructure NSW, you are invited to an Asset Management Unit industry breakfast briefing. This will provide information to existing and new contractors on how you can get involved.

To find out more by attending our Industry breakfast register at https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/industry-engagement-information-session-tickets-65766578607 or contact your Asset Management Unit on 4088 3500.
