From the Principal

Logan makes a difference...

Regardless of age, it is so easy to get caught up with ourselves and worry about things not going the way we planned, or how we 'need' to have X, Y or Z...I always marvel at our students who show initiative and want to make a difference that will benefit others and not just themselves.

This week, Logan P in 5/6F, sold face masks out in Gladstone Park after school, under the supervision of her dad, with all proceeds going to Guide Dogs Australia. The masks have been locally made by a Balmain resident, who had featured in an issue of the Pigeon Post during remote learning. This resident had made masks and donated them to front-line workers. They were being sold at Fundamental Cafe, with each mask being sold allowing another 2 masks to be created.

Congratulations, Logan, on your initiative and efforts! Guide Dogs Australia will definitely appreciate the $200 that will be coming their way!

Spotlight on...

5/4 MARIGOLD!!!!!!

What’s been happening in our classroom?

STEAM: In STEAM, we have been learning about what will happen if there were no humans. We had to think about what will happen to the environment and animals. We were learning about drawing conclusions and we did a comprehension sheet on a video we watched. We found out what would happen to plants and buildings, too. It sure was a fascinating lesson!

by Tristan Y, Roman A, Ryan R and Luca M

STEAM: During STEAM we have been working on the solar system. We made kahoots about the sun and planets we then shared them with the class and did them in groups of three or four. Now we are learning about what the world would be like without humans and the effects and we drew pictures of what plants would be like with and without humans. We also watched a video about the world without humans and what would and would not remain or thrive in non human world.

MATHS: In maths, we have been learning about percentages of an amount for example: 82% of 103 = 84.46. We have learnt to convert fractions to decimals and percentages eg: 0.4 = 40% = 40/100 simplified to 4/10. We also learnt about making denominators the same to make it easier to add and subtract fractions. Speaking about fractions, we learnt about equivalent fractions. An equivalent fraction is a fraction that looks different, but has the same amount eg: 1/2 = 5/10. We've learnt different types of fractions, such as proper, mixed and improper fractions. A proper fraction is a fraction when its denominator is larger than the numerator eg: 4/7. An improper fraction is when the numerator is larger than the denominator eg: 9/4. A mixed number is a number with a whole and a proper fractions eg: 1 3/4. We also learnt about BODMAS, which stands for Brackets, Orders, Addition and Subtraction.

by Ian, Alex B and Kyann

ART: In our art lessons, we have mainly been focusing on texture and form. We’ve been mostly working on our major work. For our major work, we have just finished drawing and colouring in our close-up of flowers with texture pens. We’ve been copying a famous artist named Georgia O'Keeffe, an American artist who paints close ups of flowers. Some of the flowers we drew are daffodil, dandelion and water-lily. We have also focused on space. We have drawn a landscape with a horizon line a foreground and background and a centre point. In the artworks, we have got a road traveling into a sunset and trees, hill or mountains and a lake.

by Alex K, Frankie, Hannah, Arkie

ART: In art, we have been learning about a range of different types of art. We have been learning about shapes and lines and if lines connect. We learnt how different art forms create shape, colours, perspective, dimension and depth. It has helped us be better at art and it was really fun. We are enjoying making new types of art work every week with Ms Bowman. She has taught how to be creative in our art expression.

HISTORY: During the past few weeks, 5M have been focusing on the Gold Rush. We have written beautiful Eureka stockade diary entries as if we were there. We dipped them in tea to make them look old. They sound and look great. We are also in the process of doing gold comprehension on laptops and answering questions about the gold rush. We had been reading the book "The night they stormed Eureka". With that, we also answered a bunch of questions.

by Lola, Ruby, Alesha

HISTORY: In history, 5M have been learning about the gold rush and the Eureka stockade. We have started to make 3D models representing the gold rush times. Our first step is to draw the design of the models on paper. Then we draw the design onto the foam boards. Our next step will be to paint the board and start creating the 3D models to stick on to the board. We are enjoying making the project because we get to do it with our friends and we can use our imagination. I'm not sure how were going to make a well but we will figure it out. We are having an amazing time making these models.
