Welcome to this edition – A month of term 4 has flown by and it is hard to believe we are nearing mid-term in readiness for the ‘run’ to the end of the year. I have to ‘pinch’ myself sometimes at how our school has progressed throughout the year. One of the most pivotal reasons being the very positive and continued change in the student’s enthusiasm toward their learning. I cannot praise our students enough for modelling our high expectations with behaviour and meeting their personal academic goals. Thanks to all parents and carers for your support of our school direction and values. I am positive our year will end well and I’m excited about the big things planned for our school in 2020……. Well done Weir!
Year 6 Senior Camp – Last week the majority of our Year 6 students ventured north to the Daradgee Environmental Education Centre to experience 4 days of engaging, teambuilding activities. The camp was fantastic and the students returned with plenty of great stories and strong friendships. A HUGE thanks must go to our Year 6 teachers, Mrs Brown and our Chappy for helping make the camp one to remember. Congratulations to our senior camp crew!
School Opinion Survey – the results have come through with our School Opinion Survey and the areas of behaviour and reculturing in our school have certainly proven to be well received by the school community with a dramatic increase in student, parent and staff satisfaction across the board. In some areas we have outstripped the state and region by considerable margins, a clear message that our community is working well together to bring a positive change to our school and most importantly to the kids…..congratulations Weir State School……showing we are ……STRONG……..SMART …….CONNECTED
School Works – Over the next month or so I will be working with facilities in town to begin works on a half million-dollar refurbishment of our current Year 5 block. There is a chance our Year 5 kids may have to move class before years end so contingencies will be put in place to help progress these works before the beginning of the 2020 school year.
After School Student Safety – Last Thursday afternoon a student of Weir State School was seriously hurt at the Willows lights after being struck by a car. We all understand accidents happen, however we can all play a part in reducing accidents by encouraging our children to wear the correct protective clothing when riding a bike, use the lights and crossings correctly and be ‘road smart’ by continually checking for cars, obeying signals and taking the time to be aware of their surroundings before moving ….please remember to coach your kids toward their safety.
Student Services – Although Weir State School offers support services for students, our allocated resources are always stretched. We have many students with complex needs and unfortunately limited resources. We have a large caseload and unfortunately it can take time for some students to be seen. Tests for eyes, ears and learning delay will always be quicker if sourced privately and this info shared with the school to develop tailored learning for our students.
School Zones – Unfortunately we have had an alarming amount of cars speeding in school zones. Please remember that Ross River Road is zoned at 40 KPH between 8am - 9am and 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm on weekdays. Any faster is breaking the law and more importantly it puts students and families in danger.
Physical Fitness - At Weir State School we value the promotion of an active lifestyle. All students are encouraged to participate in activities that get the heart racing as well as getting the body moving. Recent research has outlined that children are becoming less likely to be active, and together with an inappropriate diet, this can lead to weight issues, as well as a decrease in self-esteem and confidence. As teachers, we are aware of the importance of promoting both a healthy diet as well as an active lifestyle within our curriculum.
Our Physical Education program encourages students to participate in active sessions, working at their own level. Students are taught skills such as throwing, catching, kicking and are then provided with opportunities to practice and consolidate these. Skill sessions are balanced with games that promote the fun of being involved, as well as giving students a chance to put their new skills into practice. As students get older, the skills are linked to major games such as netball and cricket. Students then have the opportunity to participate in sport sessions where aspects such as team play and good sporting behaviour are promoted and enhanced.
At Weir State School we value the fact that all students are different. Not all of us will become elite sportspeople and be able to demonstrate flawless skills. Our curriculum focuses upon the ‘having a go’ nature of active living, as well as setting your own personal goals to achieve.
As parents, it is important that you encourage your child to always participate in school events. By supporting their efforts and celebrating their own personal improvements or goals, you are assisting them to seek out an active lifestyle where they can succeed at their own level.
This week’s proverb – “ BELIEF WILL MOVE MOUNTAINS ”
