Term 1 - Week 4 (24th February 2023)

Dear St Mary's School Community

Values in Focus: Responsibility

We have a duty to be accountable to ourselves and to others.

Matthew: 4: 1-11: Jesus is tempted by the devil in the desert.

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus is tempted by being promised riches, power and glory as long as he worships the devil. These were the Temptations of Christ, but also for us. Jesus knows that the only way to be true to his divinity is allow us to see it shine in and through his human life. The rejection of the temptation to compromise his frail human frame gives us the hope that we, too, can glimpse the power of God’s greatness in every moment we reject the desire to be directors of our own destiny and to see good triumph over evil in the choices we make.

Ash Wednesday Mass

Ash Wednesday Mass was run by our Year 6 students. They displayed true leadership in the way they read, prayed and responded during the celebration. It was wonderful to see so many parents and parishioners attend the ceremony. Thank you to Father Andrew for not only delivering the Mass, but giving his time earlier in the day to distribute the ashes to staff and students in the junior years.

Year 4/5 Reading at Mass

The students from the Year 4/5 class will be reading at Mass this Sunday at 10.30am. All parents and students are welcome and invited to attend.

Faction Swimming Carnival

The Faction Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 3rd March for all students PP – Year Six. A Skoolbag notification was sent to parents outlining details on 20 February.

Swimming Super Star

Congratulations to Andrew in Year 4/5 who represented Merredin Swimming Club and won gold in 50 metre freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and 25 metre butterfly. Super effort! If your child has excelled in an activity, be it sport, music, art, etc., please email admin@stmarysmerredin.wa.edu.au to be included in the newsletter and celebrated by our school community.

Eric Hind Music Scholarship

Congratulations to Kate Growden who won the scholarship earlier this year. Kate receives music lessons from Mrs Munns at Forte School Music being held at St Mary’s School. We are very proud of her achievement!

Wellbeing Week

Week 5 is wellbeing week at St Mary’s. The week is focused on staff and students being more aware of their health and wellness. Healthy students learn better, and healthy staff work better! The students will be involved in a range of activities in their classroom and they will be homework free with the hope that families can spend more quality time together. We hope that some of the activities and exercises will filter into your homes and become a regular part of your daily lives.

God Bless and have a lovely weekend with your families,

Mr Andy DiCarlantonio

Principal

Class News

Science / Design and Technology

We have had a busy start to the term with all year groups settling in and learning the routines. Each class is exploring the topic of Earth and Space Sciences and are learning a lot of new and exciting information.

The junior grades are exploring the seasons and the changes that occur to the weather and how it affects us, while the middle grades are looking at Earth's place in the solar system and how the Earth’s surface changes over time as a result of natural processes and human activity. The upper grades are looking at geological changes or extreme weather conditions can affect Earth’s surface.
