PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Welcome to Term 3

It is a pleasure to welcome families back to a new school term. We are excited about the various school and community happenings planned for Term 3 and hope that you are able to join us in the weeks ahead.

We know that positive parent engagement in school life is proven to promote student wellbeing, productivity and achievement and ask for your support of school activities as work commitments allow.

This term we will host our Directions in Music school band concert, Koomurri Aboriginal dance performance and student workshops, Education Week open days, Art Showcase, Book Week celebration, P&C Carnival, P&C activitython and so on.

Through these events, we will show the way that education changes lives and creates futures for our students and invite you to join us to celebrate the growth and achievements of our children.

Dancefever Gymnastics Program – reduced cost

In Term 3 we have again employed specialist teachers from Dancefever. The PE specialists are able to compact the time for students to learn the skills required allowing the class teachers more class time to devote to the teaching of literacy and numeracy and the other key learning areas.

The gymnastics program addresses specific areas of the PDHPE curriculum and brings high-level expertise to the school. Thank you in advance for your financial support to enable these programs to take place. The cost is $40 per student, but given cost of living pressures, two or more children has been reduced to $65 in total.

Opportunity Class Placement

We would like to wish all of our registered Year 4 students the very best as they sit for the upcoming OC Test. Applicants for Year 5 placement in an opportunity class in 2023 are required to take the Opportunity Class Placement Test which will be held next Thursday 28 July at school. Please note that all applications are now closed.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Student Attendance

Regular school attendance is a priority in all schools and ensures the best chance for children to achieve their full potential. At Drummoyne PS we have enjoyed high levels of attendance over many years and this reflects the high level of support from our parent community.

The Department of Education has reminded the school of procedures that are to be followed when a student is late to arrive or absent from school. Attached to the newsletter is the Department of Education’s parent information pamphlet with detailed information on all aspects of student attendance.

Whole Day Absence

  • If a student is absent from school for the whole day, a note is to be returned with the student on the first day of the students’ return to school for recording on the class roll. This change to current practice is in keeping with the Department of Education’s policy.
  • A verbal notification by phone or email to the school on the day of absence/or prior is also supported and will be forwarded to the class teacher.

 Partial Day Absence

  • Students arriving after the bell are expected to go to the school office to be marked as late to school and the reason will be recorded. They are given a late notice and this is handed in to the teacher on arrival to class.
  • Students requiring an early pickup are called to the office after the parents have notified the office staff. The reason for the absence is entered on the roll and recorded as an absence.

If you have not let the school know the reason why your child has not attended school, we will send a daily SMS to alert you. If a response is not received, a letter will then be sent home requesting an explanation.

Please remember to send in your child's medical certificate if the absence has been longer than 3 days due to illness.

If you have any questions in relation to our procedures for monitoring student attendance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

The NCCD is a collection that counts:

• the number of school students receiving an adjustment or ‘help’ due to disability

• the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students.

Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability. This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability. The NCCD uses the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

Adjustments can be made across the whole school (eg ramps into school buildings). They can be in the classroom (eg adapting teaching methods). They can also be for individual student need (eg providing personal care support).

Adjustments support student learning and are developed in consultation with the student or their parent, guardian or carer. Teachers make adjustments all the time. Some adjustments assist all students to learn, whether they have a disability or not. Australian law requires schools to make reasonable adjustment for students with disability. Reasonable adjustments apply to all types of learning, including excursions and camps.

The following are examples of those who may be included in the NCCD if they need monitoring and adjustments:

• students with learning difficulties (such as dyslexia)

• students with chronic health conditions (such as epilepsy or diabetes).

Please contact the school should you have any questions in regards to the NCCD.

Class of the Week - 4A

Class 4A have created watercolour artworks to depict the Winter season. They utilised cool colours and added some pearlessence to create a frosty background. The trees have a lack of foliage to depict the season.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-19 Update

COVID-smart settings in Term 3

Please help us keep our children safe through the following COVID-smart measures, including:

  • staying home if unwell, even if you have a negative RAT, until you are free of symptoms

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and close contacts able to return to school

  • strongly encouraging mask wearing, particularly for the first 4 weeks of term

  • strongly encouraging all eligible students and their families to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and the flu

  • maximising natural ventilation

  • good hygiene practices

  • strict requirements for close contacts attending school

  • responding to local COVID-19 conditions

Some things are changing this term including:

  • COVID-19 vaccination policy update – the mandate requiring COVID-19 vaccination will be lifted for staff in most school settings from 1 August 2022.  We will continue to encourage all staff, students and our school community to keep up to date with their vaccinations, including getting a booster shot when eligible.

  • Boosted day cleaning – our cleaning model has shifted slightly and will now be more concentrated during school hours.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Zone Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition

Congratulations to Sienna Shipp who won the Stage 3 local final in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition. Students had to submit a video of their speech and these were judged during the school holidays.

Congratulations as well to Aria Shipp who has received a highly commended award for the Stage 2 final.

The adjudicator was impressed with the high standard of speeches of all our finalists.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program provides financial assistance, based upon the physical distance of a school from Canberra.

Given this, Drummoyne Public School qualifies for a rebate of $30 per student. This rebate will be paid directly to the school and held in trust, contributing to end-of-year activities for Year 6 students.

GENERAL NEWS

Opportunity Class Placement Test

The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held at our school on the morning of Thursday 28 July 2022

Authorised students must arrive at school by 9 am. Parents should have received by email a 'Test authority' letter which students are required to bring as a printed copy on the day of the test.

Please go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 to find the 'Test information for parents and students' bulletin which contains very important information about the test, including how to access the familiarisation test. This bulletin should be read carefully.

Chess Lessons

Your child can learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Drummoyne Public School is held on Tuesdays from 11:15am to 12:15pm, starting on 19 July 2022.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games. Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email enrol@sydneyacademyofchess.com.au for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.

ALL THINGS SPORTY

During the recent school holidays, Zella (6M) participated in the Diving Australia Elite Junior championships. It was a combined event which incorporated pool events for springboard and platform diving and gymnastic skills on a gym floor.
She participated against the other State champions, and we are immensely proud that she was awarded a gold medal in Dryland Skills - a gym event that tests strength and conditioning, balance and shape.
Zella trains daily in her events and says her dream is to one day compete in the Commonwealth Games or Olympics. Watch this space!

Book Week

It’s Term 3! Why is that exciting? Because Term 3 means Book Week! Book Week takes place in week 6, but I’m so excited I have to start talking about it now!

On Monday 22 August, Drummoyne PS will host visits by not one, but two authors! Matt Cosgrove, author of Alpacas with Maracas, will join us to talk to students from Kindergarten to Year 4. In addition, Tim Harris, author of Mr Bambuckle’s Remarkables, will join us to deliver writing workshops to Years 5 and 6. More details to follow!

This year Drummoyne Public School will have a Book Week parade! Please start thinking about a costume. Students can come dressed as their favourite book character or in a costume relating to the theme “Dreaming with eyes open”! More details will come as the date draws closer.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

A quick reminder that the Premier’s Reading Challenge is on until Friday 19 August. Students can log their reading at the PRC website, accessible through the DET Student Portal. We are aiming to have a record number of DPS students complete the challenge this year! Students in K – 2 will have their reading logged by Mr Neufeld, but students from year 3 and up are responsible for entering their own books through the PRC student site.

Education Week Book Fair

It’s almost Education Week! During the Education Week open days there will be a book fair in the library.

Next week students will be writing a wish list of books they are interested in purchasing. K – 2 grandparents, parents, carers and students will be able to make their purchases on Tuesday of Education Week and 3 – 6 grandparents, parents, carers and students will be able to make their purchases on Thursday of Education Week. There will be eftpos machines for payment. Cash payments will be possible, but we are hoping to keep them to a minimum.

All purchases made will help to raise money for our school library!

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who helped out this morning with the second hand uniform sale, namely: Jenny, Leanne, Kirk, Kelly, Jess, Aviva, Ang, Jade, Tania, Ellena , Angela and Duncan. We managed to raise close to $900!

In particular, we are looking for people willing to help coordinate a stall for the P&C carnival. This involves ensuring that the materials are available for your stall and helping to coordinate the volunteers working on the stall on the day of the P&C carnival. You will need to attend probably 2 meetings leading up to the carnival. Some of the stalls are simple, others more complex. We will support you and try to make it a fun and community building experience. Please clearly state to Emma that you are interested in learning more about this role.

MONTY’S MUNCH CANTEEN NEWS

Monty’s Munch Canteen - Recess orders have closed for Mondays & Tuesdays from Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3!

We hope everyone had a good break whether it was hanging out at home or travelling away.

Firstly, thank you to students Arun and Zara for handing out online recess orders and over the counter serving on Wednesday and to Olivia, Deniz, Grace, Auley and Ava for putting all the order labels on to the lunch bags.

Thank you also to Inna for popping in on Thursday to help. Please remember that the canteen is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for recess. This is for both online orders and over the counter sales. Monday and Tuesday had only a handful of recess orders so these hours are better used on the Friday. This allows Catherine to work with me Friday morning and thus reducing the number of volunteers needed.

We do still need volunteers to help package all the sausage sizzles, toasties, sandwiches, drinks etc especially when there is anywhere between 200-300 orders.

Volunteers needed for July

TUES  26th.    9:30am-10:30am - 1         10:30am-11:45am - 1

Log in to your school24 account - First page - click on to VOLUNTEER. We love to have your company for a chat and a laugh. Don’t forget the free lunch for your child as a thank you from the P&C Committee and Canteen. It will be one free lunch (main meal only) for one child. Students have the biggest smile and hug when they see their parent helping in the canteen!

Looking forward to seeing you,

Kind regards,
