FRIDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER - END OF TERM 3 - EARLY DISMISSAL 2.00 PM

From the Acting Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Research continues to provide evidence on the enormous advantage reading with and to your children has on their academic success. Reading is the foundation to all that we do and provides experiences and understanding of events far beyond our everyday experiences. Take time to sit with your child and read, discuss their books and take their learning further by providing conversation and experiences to make connections.

Information is provided in this newsletter of how you can access your child’s Literacy Pro account, it explains how you and your child can log on at home and access books online – use this to encourage your child to have ‘sneaky reads’ and log on to read when in the car, at home, waiting for an appointment or any other opportunity. Just imagine how many words they can read and experiences they can have doing this rather than playing online games!

By logging into Literacy Pro you can see a list of books at your child’s interest and Lexile level, it also tells you if the books are available in our school library! Students are encouraged to read 50 points higher or lower than their Lexile level, but really as long as they are reading and enjoying the experience it doesn’t really matter. When you log on you can also see how many books and words your child has read as well as how many quizzes they have taken to check their understanding.

Last Friday our staff worked with another school within our Partnership on student improvement in all areas of the curriculum. The day was broken into three sessions, the first one being Building our understanding of the Big 6. This session focused on the importance of vocabulary in student success and achievement. You can assist us in this area by expanding your child’s vocabulary through experiences you share together and by talking to your child using rich vocabulary. Our teachers are developing Word Walls in their classrooms to support their students in this area. The second session focused on learning intentions & success criteria to move learning forward. This session talked about effective feedback and the impact this has on moving students forward with their learning. Staff have been focusing on this throughout this year and are continuing this journey in their classrooms as well. The last session focused on shifting from engagement to empowerment and provided information on how students can become more involved in their learning by taking more responsibility by setting goals and reviewing their work by providing feedback to themselves and others. This links to our previous work of teachers using WALT – What are we learning today? and WILF – What I’m looking for this provides clarity for the students to know exactly what they need to do to be successful. After the Pupil Free Day teachers have been exposed to many more strategies to use in their classrooms.

To continue to assist us with our planning for 2020, if you are planning to move from the area or know of families who are moving into the area please inform us of this as soon as possible. In addition, if you have any special considerations for your child/ren’s class placement that we need to be aware of during the class placement process please complete the attached form and return it to the Front office before 18th October 2019.

Your feedback is important to us. We would appreciate you taking the time to complete the links for our Parent Opinion Survey and Volunteer Award as your children are the centre of everything we do and we aspire to improve student learning outcomes for every student who attends Thiele Primary School.

Festival of Music

On Friday, 13th September Thiele Senior Choir students performed on stage at the Adelaide Festival Theatre as part of the Public Primary Schools Festival of Music. Our school was also represented by Isabella M who did a fantastic job singing a solo for the song “Get on your feet”. The Primary Schools Festival of Music, an official state icon, is a public school based music education program which is a collaboration between the Department for Education and the SAPPS Music Society, which gives all Primary Students the opportunity to perform at prestigious venues.

Well done to the Thiele students who performed well and put in a lot of hard work for their concert! It was a joy for all to watch and listen to.

Term 3 - Week 8 Assembly Report

T12 have been working on an Inquiry Unit of Work where we have compared the two famous artists: Claude Monet and Albert Namatjira. We researched information about them both and we learned many amazing facts. Both Monet and Namatjira painted landscapes. Monet was inspired by his gardens in Giverny France whilst Namatjira was inspired by the Australian outback. Both used watercolours however Monet sometimes included people as well as landscape but Namatjira only painted landscapes. We also attempted to paint like Monet which we enjoyed doing.

Congratulations

Isabella M for her solo performance at the Festival of Music and to all of the students who sang.

SAPSASA Golf - Kye H

Kye played awesome golf over the 2 days in very challenging conditions. Day 1 was played on the executive course (15 holes) where we had 140 competitors. Metropolitan students played in the morning then the country students played in the afternoon. The top 40 were chosen to play on the championship course (18 holes) overnight the wind picked up and the temperature dropped. The wind was so strong that the balls were almost being blown off the greens making putting very difficult. Kye played some of his best ever golf hitting a lot of very long drives and also managing to hit a number of par 3 greens in 1 shot. 7 boys and 3 girls were chosen for the State team. Kye unfortunately missed out finishing in 14th (combined scores from day 1 and 2). The top 2 boys were tied after 18 holes and went onto a sudden death play-off which went on for 5 holes with both boys playing some excellent golf.

SRC: Kindness Project

This term the Student Representative council have launched the Thiele Kindness Project. This will be the SRC focus for the remainder of the year.

The Kindness Project includes aspects of Kindness to Self (such as eating healthily and getting enough sleep and exercise),  Kindness to the Environment (such as picking up rubbish and litter free lunches), and Kindness to Others (such as doing kind acts for others, helping out at home and in class, giving compliments, inviting others to play, and using appropriate language).

Each student in the school has been given a sheet of paper to record their kind acts. The SRC encourage all Thiele students to get involved in the Kindness Project and spread kindness everywhere.

The SRC will be reporting to school assemblies about good news stories related to the Kindness Project over the rest of the year.

Shoeboxes of Love

The SRC will collect the shoeboxes and the donations from your child’s classroom.

If you would like to participate the shoebox can contain:

  • Something to wear
  • Something to cuddle
  • Something for school (paper, pencils)
  • Something to play with (ball, skipping rope, finger puppets)

Please note these items cannot be sent:

  • Items that leak or melt (e.g. toothpaste, bubble blowing liquid)
  • Food items
  • Damaged or used items
  • Breakable items
  • Scary or harmful items
  • Gambling related items
  • Religious, racial or political items

We need to label the boxes as follows:

2 - 4 years Girl

5 - 9 years Girl

10 - 14 years Girl

2 - 4 years Boy

5 - 9 years Boy

10 - 14 years Boy

The boxes need to have a lid which is no bigger than an A4 piece of paper and they can be

covered with decorative paper (gift wrap). Please remove any unnecessary packaging as

this creates a litter problem.

If you wish to put together a shoebox as a holiday activity we will still be accepting donations in Week 1 of Term 4.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

Campus Library

Thiele has begun to implement Scholastic Literacy Pro to support independent reading for Year 3 - 7 students who have reached reading level 28.

One of the greatest gifts we can give children is to instill a love of reading. It is not enough to simply teach children to read. We need to provide them with a variety of literature that will make them wonder, make them laugh and take them to other worlds.

At school the students sit their Literacy Pro Test – this provides them with their Lexile level. The Lexile level helps them find the right books when browsing the library and choosing books they want to read. They also have access to an online library of ebooks matched to their level.

The more books your child reads, the better they become at reading. When students complete a Literacy Pro book, they are encouraged to take a short 10-question quiz that measures their comprehension of the book they have read.  We encourage students to read as many books as they can and take as many quizzes as they can at home and at school.

Once your child has a Lexile level and commences reading Lexiled books, they can access and complete online quizzes at home by following these steps:

1.         www.scholasticlearningzone.com

2.         Choose: Australia

3.         Org ID: pjwd

4.         Enter student username and password

A letter was sent home this week with your child’s username and password included.

Literacy Pro is a great way for teachers and parents to monitor and motivate independent reading and it enables you as a parent to see your child’s reading record, how many words they have read, and celebrate when they reach a certificate level for completing quizzes on the books they are reading.

If you would like to find out more about Literacy Pro and your child, please don’t hesitate to contact your classroom teacher or myself.

Class Placement 2020

CLASS PLACEMENT 2020

Dear Parents I Caregivers,

The process for allocating students into classes for 2020 will begin early next term.  As part of our consultation process, you are invited to provide information you would like considered in determining the class into which your child/ren are placed.  This is important because much deliberation and time goes into placing each child into an appropriate class that will best cater for his I her learning needs. Once the process is completed, students are rarely changed from one class to another except in extenuating circumstances.

In considering your child's placement, we take many factors into consideration. These include but are not restricted to academic ability, behaviour, social needs, gender balance and teacher-student relationships.

If you would like to share  information about your child's class placement for next year, please fill in the following proforma and return it to Jayne at the Front Office in an envelope addressed to me (Sharon Willoughby, Acting Principal) marked "confidential".  Whilst all requests are considered, the final decision rests with the Acting Principal.

If the placement process is complete, students will be informed of their new classes on Wednesday December 11, (Week 9, Term 4).  A note informing parents of their child's class, teacher (if known), location and friends with whom they have been placed.  At this stage, changes to your child's class placement will only be made in extraordinary circumstances.

Regards,

Sharon Willoughby
