Term 4 Week 1 - 16th October 2020

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of St Catherine’s,

A very warm welcome back to the start of Term 4. I hope that you were able to take a break during the holidays to relax and unwind. Term 4 is looking to be action packed as we continue to enjoy easing COVID restrictions.

The students have quickly settled back into the school routine and are enjoying being with their classmates again and it has been great hearing the various holiday adventures the students have had.

This term we welcome Catherine Turbill back from long service leave. Catherine is looking forward to reconnecting with her class and working in partnership with Chiara Brown for the remainder of the year.

We also welcome Stephen Heuzenroder to our staff this term. Stephen is a qualified teacher with a Certificate IV in Youth Work and will be working as a school Chaplain with us on Fridays. Stephen's focus will be on providing support to students who may require additional social emotional and wellbeing support individually or in small groups as well as facilitating a mentor program with our Year 5 students in preparation for their role as senior leaders in Year 6 next year.

We have four new students join our community this term and I'd like to welcome Sophie in R/1OE, Jacob in 3/4K, Bowie in 3/4L and Benjamin in 5KD.

This week a group of students from Year 4, 5 and 6 participated in the Hills District SAPSASA Athletics Day Carnival at Oakbank Area School. Congratulations to all the students who demonstrated great team spirit and a special mention for Maggie who finished 1st in 100m, 200m and 800m, Hugo who finished 2nd in 100m, 200m and high jump and the under 10 girls relay team who finished 1st in the baton relay final.

Sun Smart - School Hats

Students are expected to wear their hats in Term 1 and 4 when they are outside at recess and lunch as well as when they have lessons outside such as PE. Please make sure your child has their hat at school and that it is clearly labelled with their name. There is a growing pile of clothes in lost property, all with no names on. If your child is missing a part of their uniform, please visit and check the lost property pile next to the office.

Parent Soiree

After several changes along the way, including venues, dates and format of the evening, the St Catherine's parent soiree is now going ahead and I thank all the parents involved in coordinating this opportunity, especially Marie-Claire Redwood, Sophie Hage, Briana Bates, Sally Hicks, Martyna Thomas, Fiona Paul, Kate Hurford and Mim Whitford for their flexibility, patience and persistence in establishing an event for parents to gather together.

Working Bee

This weekend we are forging ahead with an afternoon working bee to have a 'Spring clean' and tidy up around the school grounds. If you have a couple of hours to spare on Saturday afternoon please let our Administration staff know by emailing:

Matilda the Musical

The time has finally arrived for our Year 5 and 6 students to share their performing arts talents with the community. A matinee and  evening performance will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. There are still a few tickets available which can be purchased via the Qkr app. Thank you to all the parents and friends who have supported with costumes and various logistics for the performances and sincere thanks to our Performing Arts teacher, Kathryn Thompson who has spent endless hours preparing the students. We look forward to seeing you there.

Book Week

Next week we also celebrate the world of books through the theme, 'Curious Creatures, Wild Minds'. Parents should have received information regarding our Book Week parades that will be held next Friday which will be a great way to finish the week.

Year 6 Camp

Our Year 6 students will be heading off to Pt Hughes for three nights from Tuesday 27th October. They will be enjoying a range of aquatics and land based activities aimed at developing their personal and social capabilities. We are keeping our fingers crossed for fine weather for the trip.

Opening Blessing Ceremony

On Tuesday 3rd November we will be officially opening and blessing our new classrooms and upgraded building works and will be joined by several important guests including The Minister for Education, The Hon John Gardner, Archbishop Patrick O'Regan, The Chair of the South Australian Commission for Catholic School, Professor Denis Ralph, CESA Director, Dr Neil McGoran, past Principals, Board members and other invited guests. As we are required to adhere to ongoing physical distancing restrictions, we are unable to offer an open invitation to our families. We can however accommodate up to 30 parents who would like to attend and so I invite those who are interested to submit their names to our office staff by Friday 23rd October via email:

Should there be more than 30 parents interested in attending, we will need to draw names 'out of a hat'.

School Carpark - Pick up reminders

As we start the term, I remind families of our drop off and pick up arrangements.

  • Staff supervision is available after school until 3.30pm. Please consider arriving to pick up your child/ren between 3.15 and 3.30pm.

  • Please consider parking and collecting your child.

  • If your child is not able to get into the car independently, don't use the kiss and drop driveway. Please park and collect.

  • If there is a queue entering the kiss and drop driveway, consider driving through the carpark to collect.

  • I've heard that some parents are establishing a park and walk group. Please consider if this is something you may be able to do.

  • Always exercise caution and patience - don't use your mobile phone while in the queue and always apply your handbrake when children are entering or exiting the vehicle.

Each of these procedures contributes to the safety of all our students and their families.

I look forward to seeing you throughout the events of the coming weeks.

Kind regards,

John Low

Class Masses and Liturgies

This term we continue to celebrate Masses and Liturgies, continuing to keep in mind our social distancing requirements and ask that you are proactive in registering for any that you plan on attending. This can be done through our school website:

An addition to our services will be the inclusion of the Hail Mary. Students spent some time last term learning about the significance of the Rosary and we continue our reflection on this prayer by sharing in it as a community this term.

We look forward to having families and friends share in these occasions. For host classes and dates please refer to the updated term calendar, Skoolbag or the Website.

Sacramental Program

We are looking forward to meeting our net group of candidates and their families for the Sacramental Program. The orientation for the upcoming program will be held on Tuesday 27th October at 6pm at St Catherine's School. This will be a chance for parents to understand more about the format of the workshops and the outline of the year ahead. For anyone who is interested in participating, there are enrolment forms at the front office or you are welcome to email me ( to receive a digital copy. Completed forms can be returned to the front office.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I am writing to inform you once again about the Sacraments at St Matthew’s Catholic Church Bridgewater.

The program will begin with the information night on Tuesday 27th October at 6.00p.m. at St Catherine’s School.

Through this information letter we are once again explaining and inviting you to consider if you have given some thought about the possibility of your child/children participating in the sacraments this year.

The parish and school work together to offer preparation for the reception of three sacraments: Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist with Baptism preparation also available on request.

At the time of your child/children’s Baptism, you promised to teach your child/children about God and bring them up in the Catholic faith.  We offer this Sacramental Program to support you in your Baptismal promise and in preparing your child to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation.

As school/parish we offer to the children from year 3 to Year 7, the preparation of the Sacraments.  Discernment of readiness is the joint responsibility of parents, APRIM, Pastoral Co-ordinator and Parish Priest.

Our Sacramental program is based on the Policy for the Initiation of Children into the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Adelaide.  The policy speaks clear about the importance of parents as first educators of their children in their journey of faith.  The school offers this program in conjunction with the parish to support you in your Baptismal promise to prepare your child to celebrate the Sacraments.

The Catholic Church celebrates Seven Sacraments.  The four we offer in this program are briefly outlined below:

Baptism: is the first sacrament of Initiation.  It is the first celebration of God’s presence in our growth in a faith that will be experienced within a family and most important in the wider Christian community.

Confirmation: celebrates the gifts of God in each person in the community and seals the presence of the Holy Spirit with us.

Eucharist: completes Christian Initiation.  To share at the table of the Lord acknowledges that the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus is at the heart of the Parish Community and its ongoing sharing of this mystery that will continue to give meaning in our lives.

Reconciliation: is a sacrament that celebrates God’s loving mercy and forgiveness where we acknowledge our need to live in peace with one another and to become forgiving people.

So if you are interested and need further information please contact as soon as possible either Fr. Fred or Cathy Oswald – St Matthew’s Parish Church on 93391608 (or email or Krystina Dawe. – APRIM St Catherine’s School on 8238 8238 (or email ).

Term 4 Fundraising

We continue to live out Catholic Social Teaching principles this term through our fundraising. Our focus is on St Vincent de Paul Society with our participation in the Christmas Hamper Appeal later in the term. In the lead up to this initiative we will be spending time talking with students about their ability to positively impact the dignity of the human person through their generosity. More information about our fundraising will be shared over the coming weeks.

Book Fair Term 4 Week 2

Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:

·      Set the example. Let children see you read.

·      Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.

·      Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.

The theme of our Scholastic Book Fair is Arctic Adventure, where we hope you will find snow much to read!

It’s a fun reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.

Book Fair dates: Monday October 19 - Friday October 23

Shopping hours: 8.30-9am & 3-3.30pm October 19-23

We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.

School Banking Term 4 rewards available now

Term 4 rewards are now available to order.

The Snakes & Ladders Game is a fun way for children to learn to count and follow instructions and is printed on FSC approved paper. Even the game pieces were made out of wood (and not plastic). The Emoji wallet is a great way for students to practice using money in shops and counting change. A perfect time in the lead up to Christmas.

Thursday is School banking Day, hope to see lots of you banking this term.

NazTech Future Learners Conference

On Monday 12 October, St Catherine's teaching staff attended the NazTech Future Learners Conference as part of their professional learning. The conference was clearly linked to the CESA Key Capabilities of becoming confident and careful creators and users of ICT. The days major sponsor, Google, enabled highly regarded keynote speakers Dr. Darin Lovett and Matt Wadewitz to impart incredible stories to around 150 educators from around South Australia.

As the director of Space at the South Australian Space Industry Centre, Dr. Darin Lovett spoke about the transformation and career opportunities in the Air and Space domain and how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) are a major focus for what they do in the space industry. Matt Wadewitz, Managing Director of LeadLearn Consulting followed on discussing why skills such as collaboration, reflective practice and feedback are keys to impactful teaching and learning. His vast experience as the first nationally certified lead teacher in South Australia, and his work with coaches from Adelaide Crows, GWS Giants, Essendon Bombers, Western Bulldogs, Richmond Tigers and the AFLW team among others was an inspiration.

Staff broke off into small groups into selected masterclasses, providing rich, hands-on learning experiences in a variety of domains. Some of the amazing learning opportunities our staff experienced and will be able to bring back to our students were: website design, flying drones, levelling up your IT skills, capabilities: skills for success, 3D printing, interactive learning with Kahoot, coding with OSMO and building literacy skills through book publishing in Pages.
