A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

NEW SECTION IN THE NEWSLETTER

Please note the new section from the student Lighthouse Leaders below Ms Hayden’s report. This will be a regular feature in future newsletters.

EXTERNAL SCHOOL REVIEW REPORT

We have just received the final report from the External School Review that was held in March. All schools are reviewed as part of a 3 year process and this is the second review that has been done at HCEPS in the current review format. I am very pleased to say that our school had an excellent review with strong acknowledgement of the work that staff members do to continually address improvement particularly in student learning. Early next week the report will be uploaded into the website and I encourage you to read it.

PRIMARY STUDENT USE OF MOBILE PHONES AND PERSONAL DEVICES POLICY

At different times over the last few months, you may have heard that the Department for Education (DfE) has released new expectations regarding mobile phones and personal devices in schools. (Personal devices include smartwatches, ipads etc that have photo/video and/or internet capability.) DfE has provided all schools with a policy template which includes the mandatory expectations of primary or secondary students around mobile phones and personal devices during school activities. Schools have added some extra detail to address their local needs. Our policy has just been approved by Governing Council.

Early next week, a Skoolbag notice will be sent out with the new policy attached. It will also link to an eForm for you to complete to indicate whether you need your child to have a mobile phone or personal device at school or not. It should be noted that students from HCEPS are strongly discouraged from bringing mobile phones or personal devices to school, but if parents wish them to, they and their families need to be aware of how the devices will be managed. So I ask that you please read the policy closely and ensure you understand the expectations of the school and DfE around the ongoing implementation of the policy. I ask please that the eForm be completed by the end of Week 6, (Friday 4th June), for each of your children.

REPLACEMENT OF THE RUBBER SURFACE IN THE YELLOW PLAYGROUND

This coming week, works will commence to replace the rubber surface underneath the yellow playground. The area around the playground, part of the paving and some lawn area will be fenced off throughout the process. It is expected that the replacement process will start on Tuesday and take up to 2 weeks depending on the weather. Trucks will need to access the area through the gates near the JP yard so I remind all parents/caregivers to ensure that vehicle access through those gates from the street is not impeded by other vehicles at any time but certainly during this process. Thank you for your understanding.

NAPLAN CONGRATULATIONS

A big congratulations to all students who participated in NAPLAN during the last 2 weeks!  Despite a few initial nerves on the first day, everyone settled very easily into the process and were able to finish appropriately. Results should be available by September.

THANK YOU SOMA GOVENDER

From a recent Skoolbag notice you will know that Soma Govender has been filling a 3 week Wellbeing Leader position behind Naomi Pudney. Naomi will be returning next week so Soma finished in her role today. I would like to sincerely thank Soma and acknowledge the work she has done not only in the wellbeing programs in the school but for her support of students at risk and NAPLAN during that time.

PLEASE, A REMINDER ARRIVE AT SCHOOL ON TIME ...

A Few Words from the Deputy Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

A reminder that FYI Education Missions are happening for each class from Monday. By now your teacher has let you know which session the class will be attending.

Next Thursday is the beginning of Reconciliation Week. We are holding a sharing session on Thursday 27th May at 6:30pm in the Library.

As we said in the Skoolbag notice: “This year’s theme is More than a word: Reconciliation takes Action. We thought we would ask members of our school community to gather to share thoughts and ideas, share understandings and share stories.

This session is open to anyone. You may want to speak, you may want to hear, you may want to ask questions, you may want to read, you may want to listen or you may want to do all of these. You may have lived here all your life or consider yourself a newcomer. Everyone has a voice.”

We are very much hoping more parents are able to attend. The RSVP can be found on Skoolbag under the eform entitled “Parent and Friends Meeting for Reconciliation Week 2021”. Please let us know by Wednesday 26th May.

Last Friday all year 6 and 7 students visited the 14 other classrooms to discuss “Walk Safely to School Day”. The year 6/7 students will be visiting their allocated classroom on a regular basis on Friday afternoons for peer teaching sessions on topical issues, school values and feedback for the school.

And, finally, I had the privilege of working with the year 3 students from house 2 during the NAPLAN tests. I was so impressed by their endeavour and the manner in which they showed it was just another activity we do in a school day!

Kind Regards,

Andrea Hayden

Deputy Principal

LIGHTHOUSE LEADERS' LETTER

We are the student Lighthouse Leaders and part of our job is to tell the school community about things that happen for students in the school. Each newsletter we will try to tell you about something we have been doing. Today we will tell you about some of the things happening with the student leader programs.

Firstly, all the Yr 6 and 7 students have a student leader role. Each role has a specific thing they do to help either students or the school. All the student leader groups have accomplished something to help the school so far this year including: running a lunchtime coding club, weeding out all the garden beds, organising a suggestion box for the Resource Centre and doing Book Week book reviews, going around the yard in playtimes to help students, managing a charity fundraiser and doing a school tour for the External School Review team, organising a lunchtime scavenger word hunt, learning about composting, nude food and organising soft plastics bins, and, organising a kids vs staff wheelie basketball game, small COLA roster and Friday Funday activities. Lots of staff members help us with our roles.

Another thing we have is the SVIL Team. (SVIL stands for Student Voice in Learning.) There are 16 students from Yrs 4-7 in the SVIL Team. 8 of the team met with SVIL teams from the other 7 schools in our area last term to talk about ways they could help students stretch their thinking. Over the next 3 weeks we will be observing students stretch their thinking in classrooms. There is another meeting with other schools this term to share the work we are doing. Mrs Govender helps the SVIL Team.

Another way the Yr 6 and 7 students are leading some work is with the work we have started doing on some Fridays with Ms Hayden. We have been put into 14 groups of about 5 and then each group has been designated a class. Every few weeks the groups will work with their classes leading little lessons and discussions on certain themes. Last Friday we talked about Walk Safely to School Day.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTORAL CARE WORKER

How is your wellbeing?

I have recently been watching the recordings of the Be You virtual conference which focused on wellbeing for educators. Most of it is very applicable to parents (we could call them home educators).

We want to boost our children’s wellbeing. We spend time helping them, supporting them, listening to their problems, and communicating with their school educators and other adults in their lives. And we definitely spend time worrying about their wellbeing. However, we rarely spend the same time and energy considering and investing in our own wellbeing.

You may be asking, ‘Why is this a problem? I’m being a good parent putting the needs of my child ahead of my own.’ Have you considered though, that looking after yourself can make you a better parent? When you are feeling well, you will function well. You are able to look at the big picture, to understand the feelings of others, to be calm and kind. To avoid making emotional snap judgements and decisions. One key point that I took away from the conference was, ‘A dysregulated adult cannot regulate a child or another adult.’ If we don’t take the time to process and care for our own emotional state, then we will be wasting time attempting to help our children to regulate theirs.

My 3-year-old has been doing a big focus on bucket filling at childcare this year. She was explaining that when she helps other people it helps to fill her bucket too. My husband questioned that bucket filling doesn’t consider self-care. This was something that I have never considered before. I love bucket filling and think that it is an amazing thing to teach children about. Maybe the reason that I have never considered the lack of self-care, is that adults do tend to invest time in filling their children’s buckets, that is part of being a good parent or teacher. We know that they need praise and encouragement. However, we need to ensure that we are being filled, because you can’t pour from an empty cup. Most of us don’t have a parent or teacher who is regularly supporting us. Parenting is hard work, and it is 24/7. So, what do you do to make sure that your cup doesn’t become empty?
