Homework Review

This week we ran a focus group to evaluate our homework and discuss what homework should look like at Bexley North Public School. Thank you to the parent volunteers and students (Ash, Lachlan, Jacob, Stelios and Hartley) who gave up their time to provide their perspectives and thoughts about homework. We will now take this information to draft some BNPS Guidelines for homework which we will share with the wider community for feedback.

BNPS School Behaviour Support and Management Plan

Since Term 4 last year, our school’s wellbeing team have been working on evaluating and enhancing our school’s behaviour systems and practices to align with the department’s new policies including:

·         Student behaviour policy

·          Inclusive Education policy for students with disabilities

See https://education.nsw.gov.au/student-wellbeing/attendance-behaviour-and-engagement/behaviour-strategy/the-student-behaviour-strategy for more information on the department’s behaviour strategy.

Our team is made up of Ms Do Canto, Mrs Davis, Mrs Rooney, Mr Sneddon, Ms Wills, Mrs Kaskoutas, Mrs Bajic and Mrs Morgan. So far they have:

·  Aligned our current behaviour interventions to the department’s care continuum, showing a multi-tiered system of support for student behaviour

·   Developed a classroom and playground continuum of response to support teachers when responding to negative behaviours

·    Consulted with staff on both of these continuums, received and taken on feedback

·    Shared the continuum with parents at our Meet The Teacher session.

Over the next term, Mrs Davis and Ms Do Canto will be collaborating with our Community of Schools (Lakemba PS, McCallums Hill PS, Belmore South PS) and leading them through the development of our schools’ Behaviour Support and Management Plans. These plans will outline for the school community, how our behaviour systems and processes align and represent the department’s policies including:

·   Explicit teaching of our positive behaviour expectations

·    Positive reinforcement of these behavioural expectations

·     School response systems for negative behaviours including our multi-tiered intervention system- the Care Continuum at BNPS

·      2023 BNPS Anti-bullying plan

·       Reflection and restorative practices systems and procedures

Communication of these changes is most critical to our plan, and we are currently developing our expectations for community, staff and student consultation throughout the process. If you are interested in nominating yourself to be a part of this consultation or for any other matters in the future, please follow the link to our Google form. https://forms.gle/9cKQeCHBa77yYxtp6

Your involvement may take the form of parent focus groups, surveys or written feedback on our school policies, procedures and systems. The team will be communicating changes through:

·     P&C Meetings

·      Skoolbag

·       Newletters

·        The School Website

We will also be communicating and consulting with students on a regular basis through the School Parliament.

As we have been a PBL school since 2016, we anticipate some changes to our systems, processes and procedures to update and enhance their positive impact in line with the new departmental policies. We look forward to developing a list of parents for consultation and feedback and communicating these changes with the wider community.

Please contact Lauren Davis or Kristy Do Canto if you have any questions: 9554 3306/ bexleynth-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

NAPLAN Disability Adjustments (Year 3 and Year 5)

Our school supports inclusive testing so all students have the opportunity to participate in the national assessment program. Adjustments are available for students with disability who have diverse functional abilities and needs. Teachers will work with parents/carers to identify, on a case-by-case basis, reasonable adjustments required for individual students with disability to access NAPLAN. Adjustments should reflect the support normally provided for classroom assessments. In exceptional circumstances, a student with a disability that severely limits their capacity to participate in the assessment, or a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background, may be granted a formal exemption.

If you believe your child requires an adjustment to successfully participate in NAPLAN, please contact your child’s teacher if you have not already had a discussion with them.

Community Charter

The School Community Charter outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive. Our school works to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that support student learning. We strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for. We know that the best education happens when students, parents and schools work together.

Parents and carers play an important role in the school community. The School Community Charter informs parents and carers on how to engage with our school. Read the School Community Charter by clicking on the link above to ensure you understand how important it is to create a positive learning environment for our students.

Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government school 2024

Moving into Year 7 in a NSW Government school 2024

The NSW Department of Education are making it easier for parents and carers to enrol in high school by providing a more convenient, user friendly experience to complete student expressions  of interest online. Application’s will be open from Monday 6 March and closing Friday 24 March 2023.

Moving the Year 6-7 Transition process to an online platform will greatly reduce the number of manual tasks, reduce errors, and will be easier and faster to share information between schools.

Your child’s permanent residential address determines which school is your child’s local school. The school Finder tool at https://schoolfinder.education.nsw.gov.au/ can help you locate the local school.

Library NEWS

Premier's Reading Challenge

The PRC site has now opened for the year, and Years 3-6 students can start logging the books they have read since September last year. The Challenge is easier than ever to complete this year, as students now have 10 personal choice books rather than just 5.Many students are off to a great start and have logged a few books in Library this week, Some students have already completed the Challenge! I will be putting those names into a display soon, along with tracking each class's progress.K-2 students will have the PRC completed by the books they read in class and in Library over the year. There is no need for them to personally log any books.

Library Monitors

Our keen Library Monitors have started helping out for the year. I had over 60 students volunteer to be Library Monitors this year, which is fantastic! Due to these high numbers, the role is restricted to Year 4-6 students. All interested students should have received their note and their rostered day by now, but if they haven't, they can come and see me.

Overdue books

An email was sent last week regarding overdue loans, and thank you to those families who have returned their books. We still have 121 books outstanding, with the vast majority of these being those borrowed before the school holidays last year. Students will receive physical notes regarding these books next week, please look out for them and return these resources as soon as possible. Thank you.

CBCA Book of the Year 2023

The process of choosing the CBCA book of the year began with the announcement of the CBCA Notables this week. Next month this list will be shortened to the CBCA Shortlist. We hope to have some keen students involved in a special project regarding the Shortlist, so keep an eye out for news about that.

State Library Book Lovers Club

This monthly online club for keen readers is starting up again, with the next Zoom meeting on Tuesday 7 March, from 4-5pm. This month legendary author Jackie French is the special guest, discussing her excellent book Ming & Flo Spy for Freedom.

More details are available here:https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/learning/kids-and-families/book-lovers-club

Happy Reading!

Therapists in Schools

Some children and young people with disability may benefit from allied health and specialist therapies. Examples include physiotherapy, speech pathology and occupational therapy. In most cases, these therapies can be delivered at home or in a therapist’s office. Some therapies may be best delivered in school during school time. Please find attached some information and steps for parents who are seeking to have therapies delivered at school.

Representative Sport

The School Sport Unit (SSU) is part of the Arts, Sport and Initiatives, Student Support and Specialist Programs Directorate within the Department of Education.

The SSU oversees the representative school sport pathways for primary students. This supports our students who are gifted or show high potential in the area of sport.

Our students who show talent in particular sporting codes may trial to be a part of the Sydney East zone teams. Please click on the link to see the sports available and calendar for Sydney East trials.

Sydney East 2023 Calendar

As a school, we are limited by the number of representatives we can send to the trials. If you wish for your child to be considered to be sent to trials for a particular sport, please submit the Expression of Interest form attached at least 2 weeks before the event. We will send a permission note home with students who have been selected to represent our school at the trials. The students will be selected by the PSSA coordinators who will consider the expression of interest and observations of the student’s skills though school sport and PSSA teams (if applicable).

This form will also be uploaded to the school website over the next few weeks so it can be easily located in the future.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN – Year 3 and Year 5

NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students have the opportunity to undertake.

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The NAPLAN test window is 9 days. The NAPLAN test window starts on Wednesday 15 March and finishes on Monday 27 March 2023.
