Athletics Carnival

During Week 7, Wyong Public School students participated in their school athletics carnival. We were incredibly fortunate with the sunny weather and were able to hold most events at the Mingara sporting complex. We had a fabulous day and the teachers were all very proud of the team spirit, positive attitudes and sportsmanship displayed by a number of our students on the day. Congratulations to those students who achieved their personal best and those who have progressed to zone level.

A big congratulations to Eziekial who broke the record for senior boys discus, a very impressive throw!

Thank you to our WPS families who were able to visit on carnival day and to those that were unable to make it, we are sure that you heard all about it when the children got home from school. An extra special thanks to our wonderful canteen ladies for cooking such a delicious barbeque lunch. We are sure some of our students would attribute their sporting success to their sausage sizzle lunch. Either that, or the fairy floss from the canteen, eek!

Our sporting captains did a tremendous  job in encouraging participation amongst competitors, maintaining team spirit and leading our sporting teams in their cheers.

Netball Knockout

On Friday 17th June our Netball team headed to the PCYC Bateau Bay to play in the next round of our school knockout competition. We waited patiently whilst the other schools completed their initial rounds, to see who we would verse before taking the court against Brooke Avenue Public School. Our first quarter was close heading to the break 3-3. Unfortunately, from there the opposition put down the accelerator and we walked away defeated 28-8. Our team showed alot of resilience in defeat and whilst not the outcome we wanted, we walked away very proud of what we had achieved in this year's competition. The teamwork displayed and improvement in every game was nothing more than inspiring.Thankyou once again to our supporters, umpires and Mrs Jacovides for assisting with transport to all of our games. Congratulations WPS netballers, you have done your school proud.

John Coutis Inspirational Speaker

Last week, WPS had the privilege of hosting John Coutis - a most inspiring motivational speaker. John shared his life story, touching on the more difficult times in his life as well as the major achievements and goals he has been able to accomplish. John was immediately captivating, not only because he has no legs and moves around on a very funky skateboard, because he has a huge personality. The students and staff listened in awe as he shared many funny anecdotes as well as some painful and very difficult stories from his childhood, growing up with a significant disability. John's message was clear - You know what is right! You know what is wrong! The choice is yours! He encouraged all students to be leaders and the value of setting goals. Most significantly, he connected with the students on the topic of bullying - something he experienced for much of his childhood. John encouraged the students to stand up for and support those students who are experiencing bullying or just need a friend because it just might be the one thing that changes their life! We would like to extend our thanks to John for sharing his incredible story and words of wisdom. It was an experience we, both the staff and students, will never forget!

Children's University

Last week, the students participating in the Children's University program were thrilled to visit Newcastle Univeristy, Ourimbah Campus. Throughout the year, they have been participating in many and varied learning activities, recording each experience in their learning passport. The program, organised by Newcaste Uni, sees students gain knowledge from the wide range of people, events and activities we have available on the Central Coast. It highlights the fact that learning does not always have to be in a classroom. The excursion certainly did not disappoint. Students participated in a range of activities from Karate, water bug identification, STEM programs, construction, food science and even marine biology, where students were able to dissect a squid! Students also had the opportunity to experience a little bit of university life, sitting in a lecture theatre and wandering the beautiful campus grounds. They have a few months left to continue to build on their learning experiences before the graduation ceremony in Term 4. Keep working hard everyone!

Debating

Last week saw both the Year 5 and Year 6 debating teams face off with their opponents for Round 2 and 3 of the Premier's Debating Challenge. The Year 5 team travelled to Killarney Vale PS whilst the Year 6 team held their debate online. Both teams were victorious and are looking forward to their next debate early next term.

Basketball Gala Day

Our schoolboys and girls participated in the Basketball Gala day on Friday 24/06/2022 at Breakers Indoor Sports Stadium. Unfortunately, our girls didn't win but, I am proud of all those who worked hard and displayed their personal best. The boy's team was unbeatable and reached the finale. Boys gave a good fight to the all-boys reps team and lost the game by 37-57. I am so proud of their hard work and dedication. Keep up the good work and trust yourself.

Student Environment Group

The Wyong Student Environment Group meets twice a week in a lunch or recess break on Mondays and Thursdays. Ms Whitehouse leads the group around the school grounds so we can identify the birds visiting our school and the places that attract birds. We have identified many birds including: Magpie, Plover/Masked Lapwing, Indian/Common Myna, Crested Pigeon, Galah, Noisy Miner, Currawong, Rainbow Lorikeet, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and the Satin Bowerbird.

This photo shows some of our group at a tree. It is tagged 12 and we are watching it carefully as Tree 12 has a hollow.

Public Speaking Competition Stage 2 and 3

This year our school has again entered the Central Coast Public Speaking Competition and will have finalists moving on to the district level in Term 3 which is very exciting.

Congratulations must go to all the students in Stage 2 and 3 who reached the school finals of the Central Coast Public Speaking Competition this term. The prepared speeches were all such a high standard again this year, that it was difficult to separate the top speakers. Well done finalists!

The Stage 2 finalists were: Olivia, Cobyn, Serena, Lyla, Nancy, Hannah, Aliyah and Scarlet.

The Stage 3 finalists were: Ellyse, Abby, Max, Destynee, Phoebe, Josh, Mikaila, Livinia, Kitanna, Peter, Evelyn and Olivia.

All these students should be congratulated for their hard work in the competition. It was a pleasure to listen to such wonderful speakers.

Our winners from Stage 2 were Scarlet and Lyla and Stage 3 were Ellyse and Olivia. Congratulations to all of you on well-rehearsed speeches. These students will represent Wyong at the next level of the competition in Term 3.

Congratulations once again to all the students who participated in the competition. I’d like to thank Mrs Norman and Mr McGuinness for giving up their time to adjudicate. Thank you also to Jessica, Riley, Tristan and Mikah for being such terrific hosts and timekeepers. The class teachers also need to be commended for doing such a terrific job in preparing the students so well for the competition.

NAIDOC DAY

On Tuesday, 28th June, Wyong Public School celebrated NAIDOC Day. The day commenced with a whole school assembly. Thank you to the special guests, parents and community who were in attendance.Throughout the past two terms students in Year 4 and Stage 1, have been participating in cultural workshops with The Dinnewan Program. We were treated to three outstanding performances from students in Stage One, who performed the Welcome Song, the Wave Dance, and the Willy-wag Tail Dance. Year 4 students presented a stunning slideshow of the program and an explanation of what they have learned.Following the assembly all students participated in rotational activities with their stage and we all joined for a picnic lunch in the playground. A huge thankyou must go to Mr Wilkes for cooking 550 sausages for all to enjoy. It was wonderful to see so many families join us on this occassion.

Last Friday we handed out our Kerri Beavan Reading Awards to 8 very excited recipients! These students I am sure are eagerly looking forward to spending their $20 Book Fair vouchers. We thank our wonderful P&C for donating these very generous vouchers in memory of Kerri and the wonderful contribution she gave to our school and the love of reading she shared. Photos to come in our next newsletter of these students!
