Dear Parents and Caregivers

I have truly waited until the last minute to write this article. This is not my usual modus operandi but I wanted to be able to genuinely share how good it feels to be ‘getting back to normal’. This morning we had Assembly, for the first time in 2022! Our parents, family and community members joined us and the children had the opportunity to share their learning and talents. Both our Band and Orchestra are quite fresh, with many members having headed off to high school last year, nonetheless they summoned their stage courage and accompanied us as always for Assembly.

We were the recipient of two Certificates of Recognition at today’s Assembly, one that must be shared with all as it was from St Vincent de Paul for the generosity shown through donations made during the Christmas season of 2021. Whilst this may seem a long time ago, it’s always nice to know your kindness has been appreciated and remembered.

The second certificate was from the Commissioner for Children and Young People to Crafers, for Excellence in Student Voice, ‘in recognition of your commitment to student voice and advocacy’. Last year, the students were invited to share their thoughts and concerns about themselves, their world and the things they think ‘grown ups’ should know. It is pleasing to see our students take part in initiatives such as these as it highlights their awareness of things around them, that may or may not have an immediate impact. It also informs us about the things that are important to our younger generations.  In today’s world, our children receive information in so many ways and there is such an abundance of it. It can be difficult to know the impact events have on children of school age and what they think about when they have time to themselves. It feels me with hope that they are being asked and that they are answering, should our Commissioner and others, including us, be listening carefully we may see these concerns addressed and our children continue to be filled with hope for their futures and the futures of others. That’s a nice place to be!

Kind regards

Chan

Statewide Schools Netball Competition

On Thursday of week 5, the Crafers Primary School girls netball team travelled to the Heathfield netball courts to play against two other school netball teams in the Statewide Schools Netball Competition.

The teams were Heathfield/Mylor combined, Uraidla and Crafers. The whole Crafers team played well and we won both of our games. The team members included: Ivy A, Mila, Matilda, Rosie, Imogen, Lilah McW, Lilah McK, Mieke, Georgia and Lucy.

In our first game we played the Heathfield/Mylor combined team. We started with a strong mid-court and attack, but our defence was outstanding! The defenders Lilah MK, Ivy A, Matilda and Mieke all took many intercepts leading us down the court with speed to create a good gap on the scoreboard by half time. We ended the game with an impressive victory of 48 - 0.

Our second game was against Uraidla, who gave us much more of a challenge. Our goal shooters included: Lucy, Rosie, Georgia, Mila and Lilah McW. The scoring sensation of the day was Rosie who shot with great accuracy only missing two goals all day! Ivy and Matilda took many intercepts giving us a great advantage. Imogen played strongly and bravely with an injury before heading to the doctors for an x-ray. During this match our coach decided to mix up our positions by putting Ivy and Mieke in shooting, with both of them scoring awesome goals. We managed to pull away by the end of the game for a great win! At the end of the match, we had taken our second victory in the tournament winning us into the next round. The final score was 47 - 3.

We had a wonderful day and appreciated the excellent spirit and competitiveness of our opposition schools. The second round will be played early in term 3 and we are deeply hoping to win there to go to the grand final at Priceline Stadium.

Hills and Barker District Cross Country

Two weeks ago, on Tuesday children from year 4, 5 and 6 participated in cross country. It was an amazing day and everyone did great! The track was at Woodside and all the schools from the Hills and Barker District were there. At the end of the day, everyone was tired and proud of themselves.

We managed to have three people get into the district team and on 9 June they were compete for a spot on the state team.

The girls who were in for 2011 were really happy because they won the team award. We had four runners and they came 6th, 7th and 9th! Everyone tried their hardest and we had lots in the top 10 or 20 and even one ribbon winner. It was a great day and everyone enjoyed it.

Boys Netball

On Monday, 6 June, a team of year 5 and 6 boys played in a knock out netball competition at Highgate Primary School.

Although we lost our matches we still had tonnes of fun together and loads of laughter. During our first match we were shocked to see how good Highgate were. After the first quarter we all talked to each other about how we need to pass and lead to the space. The second quarter came and we scored a few goals, but still Highgate were a great team with good sportsmanship.

For our second match we played a team called Colonel Light Gardens (which is also the first school I ever went to) and my goodness were they rough! They got called for obstruction so many times but yet we lost by two points this time. That game was a huge improvement for our team. by our third game we scored 11 goals which was very exciting and we almost won! Unfortunately we lost by one goal.

We all had such a fun day and learnt a lot about netball. At the end of our third game we packed up our things, got in the car and went back to school to return to our normal day there.

Room 4 Reconciliation Week

For Reconciliation Week, Room 4 worked on designs that were inspired by two Aboriginal artists - Elaine Russell and Bronwyn Bancroft. The following art works are directly linked to our Acknowledgment of Land written by our class. They depict the students honouring the connection to country and land.
