Principal's Message

We have come to the end of the term with many of our onsite activities returning. The school have started our regular Monday morning assembly for the first time since 2020 which is so wonderful to see.  We have welcomed back our parents for drop off and pick up and our recess and lunch breaks are happening at the same time across the school.  It certainly brings the harmony and connectedness of our community back, which has always been one of our strengths.

I was fortunate to attend our chess club last Thursday which is coordinated by Mr Potten.  We had a lot of fun problem solving and visualising the chess pieces as we tried to create a checkmate.  I even got one of the moves correct which brought a huge cheer.

Last week we were able to celebrate Harmony week and National Day of Action again violence and bullying across the school, even having time with our buddy classes which was terrific. Follow the link to watch highlights video on our YouTube page.  With the Easter Hat Parade, PBL Launch Day and also an Iftar Dinner this term, we have so much to celebrate.  Keep checking Skoolbag, Class Dojo and Seesaw for more details about these events.

The Strategic Improvement Plan 2021-2024 outlines the initiatives and activities the school is actioning to improve the learning and wellbeing outcomes for our school community.  Take a look at the visual which represents our three strategic directions and how they support continuous improvement in teaching and learning across the school P-6.

This term we have started our teacher professional learning within Enriched Learning.  The leadership team along with classroom teachers are learning side by side supported by 4C Transformative Learning.  We are at the beginning of the journey to embedded creativity, collaboration, communication and critical reflection into or teaching and learning programs. The goals are to increase engagement and create students who are self-regulated, determined and who are able to think why and how while interacting with a learning challenge.

I wish everyone a safe, relaxing holiday. All students return to school on Wednesday 27 April.

We can’t wait to see you all

Preschool & Early Intervention

During this first term in the preschool, we have had a strong focus on settling into our environment and getting to know one another by creating a place where everyone belongs. We have been learning about our identity, building relationships and making friends, sharing our culture and who is in our family. At preschool, we develop a sense of belonging through play and experiences where we feel accepted. All preschool children participated in Harmony week learning experiences.

Our Early Intervention classes have participated in many different table time experiences as they learn the routine. They have made the most of being outside despite all the rain, exploring the outdoor environment. Bikes, climbing, slippery slide and the cubby house are a few things they have enjoyed. They also have been loving sensory experiences and lots of music and movement activities. Some favourites are Ram Sam Sam, head and shoulders, knees and toes and baby shark.

Early Stage 1

KINDY LOVE TO LEARN!

Kindergarten students have completed their first ever term of school. They have loved learning different things and making new friends. We are so proud of how well they have settled into school routines and can’t wait for all the learning that will happen in term 2.

K/6 Owls & K/6 Kookaburras

K-6 Owls and Kookaburras enjoyed celebrating Harmony Day on the 21 March 2022. We started the day with gardening. Ms Clare showed us how to water plants, trim leaves and plant new seeds. We also cut some chrysanthemum flowers and brought them to the class. In the classroom, we made a Harmony Tree by tracing our hands. 5 Terrific students visited our class and we completed Harmony Day Art and Craft and had so much fun.

Stage 1

Stage 1 participate in the InitiaLit program. This is a whole-class literacy program providing all children with strong foundations to become successful readers and writers. InitiaLit is a three-year program, covering the first three years of school (Kindergarten to Year 2).

Stage 1 have fun learning lots of new spelling strategies and vocabulary to use in their writing.

Stage 2

On Harmony Day 21st of March, Stage 2 worked along side their buddy classes engaging in a variety of craft activities for the Harmony Day and National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Students from Stage 2 were very enthusiastic to help Stage 1 students create their piece of craft. We also shared stories about how we are settling in our classes and what it means to be kind.  Below are photos of Stage 2 with their buddy classes.

Stage 3

Stage 3 students have been actively engaged in learning guided by their own interests, curiosity to learn and passions. Groups of students have been working collaboratively to pursue their inquiry-based passion projects.

Have a closer look at our learning:

  • Students brainstorming their ideas and building their capacity to develop well written arguments for an upcoming in-class debate. Topic: Should students be allowed to choose their own teachers?
  • Such a topical debate with varied reasoned responses from students.
  • Students also explored important life-long traits as a team, sharing their views on characteristics and their importance in the community for harmony.
  • A large group of students began their passion projects around plants. Hands-on learning with well researched fact sheets on their planted herbs, fruits and vegetables are underway.

Such a successful learning journey happening in Genius Hour with loads of smiles and laughter.

Community Language

We near the end of term 1 and how exciting and thrilling this term has been. Students worked enthusiastically to engage in learning the Arabic letters, numbers and colours. It was interesting to see the diverse levels of Arabic knowledge in our students. Many of our students come from non-Arabic speaking background and we found that they had great prior Arabic knowledge.  This is why in our Arabic program, we, as teachers, try and set up activities that align with students’ level of understanding.

The last few weeks of term 1, we focused on teaching the Arabic letter formation  ـح      ـحـ     حـ. Arabic phonics مخارج اتحروف. For the upper primary we taught the importance of the 6 vowels in Arabic –a, i, u, o, e – which are short and long vowels and are called Fatha, Kasra & Damma. Students also participated in the whole school events such as Harmony Day which the students learnt the Arabic meaning of يوم الانسجام and, as a class, completed a poster on this event.

Library

Stage 2 students are learning to develop good comprehension strategies while enjoying their reading for leisure and pleasure. Rawan from Year 3 amazed us all with the fabulous connections she made between texts.

Let me introduce you to Huey the Bookbot.

Huey is a brand-new way for children to find books they love. It’s like a chatbot. Huey was created by two inspiring women, Meena Tharmarajah and Caroline Kinny-Lewis, that wanted to bring great reading experiences to children. They created Huey so that it could help children find a book that matched their reading ability. Meena and Caroline both worked with The ABC and created some other awesome apps such as ABC Play School Art Maker, Bananas in Pyjamas and iView.

Huey has been integrated to our school’s library catalogue and is ready for students to use. It will now be much easier for our students to find books that they will love reading! Click HERE to see how Huey can assist, remember to give Huey a few moments to load. Alternatively, you may scan the QR Code. With Huey’s book suggestions your child can search for a book at home and be ready to request it once they attend their library session. Students may also borrow during recess daily EXCEPT on Fridays.

Carnival Book Fair

We thank our school community for their support of yet another successful Book Carnival. Over three hundred books were sold in one week! That means more books in the hands of our students, a FANTASTIC outcome indeed. The benefits of hosting a Book Fair also meant that hundreds of dollars’ worth of books were added to our school library collection. Thank you once again to all our parents and staff.

Chess

Coming out of our “bubbles” has meant that Chess Club can resume. And so it did, with much enthusiasm and excitement. Many beginners are giving it a go and are learning just how much fun a game of chess can be. A huge thank you to Nathan from Sydney Chess for his expert tutoring of our budding champions.

Everyone one’s a winner as long as they put in some effort!

NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge:

The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) aims to encourage a lifelong love of reading for pleasure. The chosen titles allow students to experience quality literature. It is open to all students in NSW from kindergarten to Year 9.

In recent years most of our students completed the challenge and were awarded a certificate from the NSW Premier’s office acknowledging their efforts. Let’s work together to ensure all our students complete this year’s challenge. Students may borrower PRC books from the school library or your local library.
