West Lakes Shore School Newsletter

TERM 3, Week 10 - 25 September 2020

LEADERSHIP CORNER

Dear Families

As we end Term 3 we would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday. It has been a fabulous term packed with so much fun! We’ve had an action packed Year 7 camp, an outstanding whole-school Book parade, several excursions with activities to clean up and care for our local environment, cross country day with over 140 of our kids participating and Cultural Day, to name a few.

Term 4 will see us introduce our ‘Active Body, Active Minds’ whole-school Connected Curriculum with a big focus on being physically and mentally active. Our House Leaders and Mr Dixon are currently planning an exciting and active Sports Week with some year level tennis days, sport events, House Leader chants and more.

 Wellbeing and Engagement Survey 2020

Analysis with Governing Council, of our Term 1 student survey, unpacked key areas showing improvement with School Climate and once again strong teacher engagement and positive relationships. All areas of bullying maintained the momentum from the positive increases in high and medium wellbeing around these in 2019 and we unpacked areas to continue to emphasise throughout our whole-school. Due to the impact of COVID we have re-run this survey across years 4-7 and we will be able to compare pre and post data. A happy and safe school requires us all to work together to understand our rights and responsibilities and ensure these are enacted by all. Our Be Kind’ Cup Term 3 House was awarded today to:

A huge well done to all of our children who have been showing their kindness and positive values to all.

West Lakes Shore Kindy Visits

The West Lakes Shore Kindergarten have been visiting for transition and spending time meeting this year’s Reception Staff and becoming familiar with our school. Next term our morning transition visits for all new Reception students will be on Friday week 2, Friday week 4 and Wednesday week 9. Letters have been sent to all families who have children commencing in January today. Please get in touch urgently if you have not yet enrolled your child.

Sea Star Unit Renovation

The Sea Star Unit transformation is due to be finished this holiday. The space is looking wonderful and is so light, bright and airy. Reception staff spent a half day in professional development reviewing and creating what these spaces will look like. With a focus on evidence and research these spaces will be codesigned with the children and will be flexible in nature. We want our learning environments designed to enable students to practise, play, discover, explore, communicate and critically and creatively think.

Excellence for all!

We can’t end our fabulous term without acknowledging the hard work and outstanding commitment of the staff at West Lakes Shore that make such a positive difference for our children. Here’s a few opportunities to recognise and pay it forward to any who have made a significant difference for you.

Enjoy the rest, stay safe, be kind and see you in Term 4!

PERSUASIVE WRITING FROM P2

Children should play sport

‘RING!’ as I fill up with excitement from the siren ringing. The excitement is why I believe that all children should play sport. It benefits you by supporting your health and fitness, it structures your social and mental interaction, and it teaches you life skills that you would need for years to come.

It is vital for you to exercise in life. Sport gives many benefits including supporting your health and fitness, while you play and enjoy yourself. Your body gets vital vitamin C, D and E. Without vitamin C, D and E it is easy for you to die from sickness and it makes you stiff resulting in slower movements and can result in death because of no blood flow. That is a vital reason for you to play sport.

I believe all children should definitely play sport. It is certain you can improve your social and mental interaction and you can make friends with playing sport. Making friends at sport can result in a good feel, feel like you belong and all up it makes you a kinder person.

I believe that our population should certainly benefit with learning vital, important, needed life skill. With playing fun, exciting sport you can learn life skills along the way. You never know when you would need the skills taught from sport in life.

Do you want our population benefitting from having better health and fitness, having more social interaction, and learning vital, important life skills? That is why you should play sport.

CULTURE CORNER

CULTURE DAY

Konnichiwa!

Term 3 has been very busy in Japanese, especially with our immersion students. We have been creating 1,000 paper cranes to commemorate Peace Day. They looked fantastic as decorations for Culture Day. A special thankyou to Kenza, Lily R, Lily N & Ashlynn who made over 700 of the cranes between them.

A dedicated group of year 6's gave up their Thursday lunch play for two terms so we could create a dance to perform at the special culture day assembly. They worked together to choreograph, practice and perform the dance with some traditional fan dance elements. Thank you to Amber, Lucy, Ava, Sarah, Rhianna, Kaleb, Mitchell, Jordyn and Sam for making the effort to perform.

Following the dance we had Matsuri Taiko come to perform to all the students. During the performance the Taiko drummer Nicole told us the history of Taiko, the costumes involved and training. She then answered all the students questions.

In the courtyard we had stalls; Mr Toden joined us to assist with the Calligraphy stall, we had Judo demonstrations in the gym, Immersion students ran stalls for origami, chopstick competitions, Poky and colouring. Trishaa designed the manga characters that were available and Julian helped bag all of the calligraphy posters.

Sushi Train delivered delicious sushi for those that had made preorders and Sofi in the canteen ensured they were delivered to all classes.

I am incredibly proud and privileged to have worked with so many to host this event and it was wonderful to see all the traditional cultural dress-ups. Together we raised almost $500 for Treasure Boxes charity.

YURU CHARA COMPETITION

As part of Japanese this term, students in the Sea Dragon Unit (Year 5-7) designed Yuru Chara (mascots) to represent West Lakes Shore School.

They voted amongst themselves a winner for each class and then those were given to Reception-Year 4 students to choose a winner to represent the school.

At the Friday Wellbeing assembly Dhanin, from the Immersion Group announced that WLS Bear designed by Elena and Laila J from SD4 had won the competition.

Their Yuru Chara will now be made into a stuffed toy for all students to enjoy in the Wellbeing Hub. Omedeto (congratulations) to our winners!
