Principal's Report

Thank you to Mrs Gale for relieving while I was absent during the term. It was a good feeling coming back knowing that our students were maintaining their focus to learn each day. As a school we are always interested in hearing opinions from the school community about what is going well and ways we can improve our practices. The school would like to hear from each family about 2 things you could give us a star for and what you wish would be fixed or changed. To provide feedback I ask you to complete an online form. https://forms.gle/ExTUKLhanGtFvBLz6

This link will work from any device, including telephones.

There are some dates that need to be brought to your attention. They have been added to our school calendar that is on the school’s website. https://meadowflat-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/

Today the students in Years 3 to 6 connected via video conference to a counsellor from the Kids Helpline. They will be discussing a variety of wellbeing coping strategies next term with them as a part of our Health lessons.

Thank you to our Year 5 students for their captain speeches.  Everyone has voted and the results will be announced at the end of year presentation.

Michael Wood.

Captain's Report

Thank you to all the  parents and caregivers for coming out for our combined Book Week and Education Week celebrations. All of the students performed perfectly. Thank you for being respectful when the bell was revealed, we are very proud of the final results, it looks amazing. We hope the bell can be used for many more  years to come.

A big thank you to Helen Drewe for giving us some indigenous plants from the Lithgow and District Community Nursery to plant in our school gardens. The whole school  worked hard on our wattle art which was displayed at Lithgow City Library for National Wattle Day. We received very high reviews on our artwork. Two students’ works have been kept by the library and will be on permanent display.

Sport Captain's Report

In a couple of weeks Katie, Matilda, Couper and Lucy will be representing Meadow Flat Public School at the Interschools Equestrian Gymkhana in Moss Vale.

Sport has been very interesting and varied this year.  During Term 2, Andrew from Bathurst came and taught us athletics. During term 3 we have had some basketball players Michael and Darreon and one of their coaches, Richard, from the Lithgow Lasers come to the school and teach us Basketball skills for 5 weeks. For the past few weeks we have all been having fun on Fridays with our own teachers. Wollemi and Billabong merge classes on Fridays and we have been playing teams sports like continuous cricket and tee-ball.

The Bilby and Platypus merge on a Friday and they have been playing rounders which is like tee-ball but you have 3 balls which are in a hula-hoop. You can either throw them or kick them, you then run around the diamond but when all the balls are back in the hoop you have to stop on one of the 3 bases.

By your sports captain,

Jamia

Library monitor's report

This term has been great!

The Wollemi class have been busy reading  books for the Premiers Reading Challenge for this year. So far, we have read a lot of books.

We celebrated book week in week 7. Mrs Kelly held a book fair in the Library and we had a parade which allowed us to see the lovely costumes that all the students had worn. The theme for Book Week this year was reading is my superpower. The ladies from Lithgow Library came out to our school and read us the winning book from its category, its name was Cicada.

Wollemi have been reading the winning shortlisted book for 2019 called His Name was Walter by Emily Rodda.

The author of the month is Jackie French because we have lots of her novels and picture books in our library to read.

Music monitor's report

As part of the Book Week celebrations in week 7, the whole school performed the Lion Sleeps Tonight and it was very successful and fun.

A big thank you to Mrs. Palmer for teaching us the ukulele, we have enjoyed her lessons and learnt a lot.  We have learnt how to play C, G, F, G7 and A minor chords. We practice the chords every Friday. The worst thing is packing all the ukuleles away and putting them in their cases. The songs that we have learnt are B-I-N-G-O, She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain, and Shoo Fly Don’t Bother Me and of course The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

Everyone enjoys playing ukulele.

Farm monitor's report

Helen Drewe from the Lithgow and District Community Nursery returned our wattle day art and brought in 4 plants as a thank you gift, they included a dianella, an accacia and a native yam which we will be able to harvest.

The nice spring weather has allowed us to get out in the garden again to do some planting.  We have prepared some of the garden beds and have planted some potatoes and flowers.

Woolworths have kindly donated a discovery garden to our school.  This garden kit includes all of the 24 vegetable, herb and flower seeds which make up the discovery garden promotion currently running through Woolworths.  We would like to give a big thank you to Mr Evans for delivering this to our school.  We look forward to planting the seeds very early next term

Playtpus class

Platypus class have been learning about push and pull forces in science. We made a pinwheel toy. It uses a push force as you blow on it to make it spin around.

In maths we have investigated 2D shapes and 3D objects. We have also been having fun learning about Australian coins, students have enjoyed sorting coins and making their own wallets to store their play money in.

Kinder students have had a busy term full of learning and growth, and they are all very excited to welcome the new kinder students for 2020 as they start transition next term.

Bilby class

Bilby class are enjoying using technology in the classroom.  Students use iPads everyday during literacy lessons and have also used iPads and laptops in our digital technologies science unit.

Billabong class

Billabong class have been working on recounts from school camp last week.

My First Camp by Lachlan Selmes

It was 6.30am in the morning at the Court House in Bathurst.  The bus was waiting for the kids to get on.  After we had left Bathurst, we went to the Royal Flying Doctors base in Dubbo and we learnt who established  the Royal Flying Doctors.  He was John Flynn.  He is on the $20  note.  I got to use one of the oldest communication things.  It goes beep! beep!

It was fun when we went to the old goal as we got to see the watch tower but we did not go up there.

When we got to the Billabong camp site,  the zoo keepers told us what not to do, such as do not eat in the tents. Then we got to go to the tents.  In the night we went on a tour of the zoo. It was so boring because it was Australian animals.  Then we went back to the camp site and then we went to the tents and we got in the tent. I got to sleep on the floor. Brae and Joey slept on beds.  In the morning we got up and went to the cover and we have breakfast.  Then we got on the bus and we went home.  We arrived at the Court House in Bathurst and I saw my mum and nan.

I had a great time on the excursion.

Camp recount by Felix Willis

In the old Dubbo Goal there were mannequins and they talked.  We were shown a room that was called the Solitary room.  It was a dark room and there was a dirt layer over the floor.  While the prisoners were locked in this room they would put a button on the ground and they would try and find it.

Camp recount by Lilly Wilkes

On Wednesday morning I got up at 5.30am to get to camp.  The first place we went was the Royal Flying Doctors. It was fun because we learnt really cool things like who started the Royal Flying Doctors.

After we went to the Royal Flying Doctors we went to the Old Dubbo Gaol.  We walked around the old Gaol for a little while and on the way the tour guide told us a few stories like a pair of brothers that tried to escape but it didn't work out, so good for them.

After that we went to Dubbo Zoo. I was with Ali and Nina.  At night we did a night tour of the zoo. We saw wallabies, koalas, echidna, quokkas, emu and dingoes.  In the morning, after we had breakfast, we went and saw the Siamang monkeys and the white-handed gibbons. There were 4 baby giraffes, we could definitely see which was the male giraffe because it was black.  There was a peacock that wandered around the zoo, his name was George.  When we went home I was really sad to leave the zoo, but I was excited to see my mum and dad.

School Camp by Jordyn Irwin

At 5.18am on Wednesday morning, I woke up from an amazing dream. I wish I could tell you about it, but this is about school camp.  I eventually got in my car and I made it to McDonalds and waited for my chocolate muffin and hot chocolate it was amazing!

We made it to the Bathurst Court House. I was looking for Tayah and I found her hugging her pop, it was very cute. We jumped on the bus, Tayah and I found a seat.  After 2 hours I found a new friend, his name was Wyatt.  We had a break and played tag, it was fun.

We made it to the Flying Doctor Service and we got split up into groups of 24. The first thing our group saw was inside a Flying Doctors plane. Tayah and I were the second people to sit up in the pilot's seat. I have to admit we were good pilots.  We also looked at the different rooms.  There was a dentist and a hospital.  We then got back on the bus and had lunch and drove to the Jail.

We walked in the gates of the Old Dubbo jail and went and sat down on the grass.  Meadow Flat and Rockley were together on the tour.  The best part at the Jail was the hospital because there were beds and we got a break.

We made it to the zoo, loaded our bags off the bus and went in the tents to set up.  I was with Tayah and Ellie. We set up our beds and went and played a game and went to dinner.  It was then time for the night tour.  Tayah and I partnered up and went  and saw wallabies, wombats, koalas, an echidna and dingoes.  After we saw all the animals we went to the Billabong camp and had paddle pops, cookies and chocolate milk. Yum! Yum!

After breakfast it was time to see the animals.  There was a black spotted giraffe, it was cool, a zebra and a rhino.  We had some lunch and saw the lions and tigers.  We got back on the bus again and were going home.  After four hours, we were back at the Bathurst Court House saying "Hi" to mums and dads.

Wollemi class

This year MFPS were invited to be the contributing artists for the Wattle Day Celebration at Lithgow City Library.

Wattle flowers are a sign of Spring breaking. Helen Drewe, the co-author of Native Plants of Hassan Walls Reserve Lithgow ran it.  Last week, Helen came to the school to thank us for the students' artworks as every student contributed. As a reward for our hard work she donated 4 native plants for our garden. They came from the Community Nursery in Lithgow.

One of the native plants is a microseris lanceolata, a kind of native yam. We will plant it in our vegie patch and hopefully in a few years we will be able to harvest bush tucker from it.
